The Socialism Of Norman Thomas, Robert Theo. Hummer Apr 1935

The Socialism Of Norman Thomas, Robert Theo. Hummer

Bachelors’ Theses

Perhaps the most important economic issue of the present day is Socialism. Though this system is as old as feudal society, with its aristocratic and favored few, it has a more vital appeal as a remedy tor present modern ills, especially in view of the "great calamnity',the "sin of 1929" and its results, the present economic depression. This "cure-all" had its birth among the proletariat and was immediately opposed on all sides. The controversy it evoked has raged on through time and probably will not cease as long as socialism is what it is. For if Socialism were merely an …

Revival Movement In The Hsin I Church, Max Zschhiegner

Concordia Theological Monthly

What connection has Buchmanism with the present revivals taking place in the Hsin I Church? I have discovered none, though there is much in common between the two movements. With this statement the task set for me by the Hankow Conference might be considered finished.

A Comparison Of The King James And The Douay Version, Geo. A. Vogel Feb 1935

A Comparison Of The King James And The Douay Version, Geo. A. Vogel

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the light of what has been said, then, let us examine the Douay Version and see whether it differs from the Authorized Version in its doctrinal statements. If there are any differences, what shall we hold concerning them? To begin with, we find that its Old Testament has forty-six books, while the King James Version has only thirty-nine. These additional books are commonly known in the Church as the Apocrypha, the spurious books.

History Of Erastus Snow, Joseph William Olson Jan 1935

History Of Erastus Snow, Joseph William Olson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this Thesis has been to write, for the first time, an authentic, unbiased "Biography of Erastus Fairbanks Snow, Missionary, Pioneer, and Colonizer."

Biography was chosen at the suggestion of Dr. Lowry Nelson, Professor of Rural Social Economics, of Brigham Young University, and because of a natural fondness for western history, and a sincere appreciation for the men and women who made "The West" liveable. For the particular subject chosen, I am indebted to Dr. William J. Snow, Professor of History at Brigham Young University.

The Influence Of The Lockian Empiricism On The Theology Of Alexander Campbell, William J. Moore Jan 1935

The Influence Of The Lockian Empiricism On The Theology Of Alexander Campbell, William J. Moore

Graduate Thesis Collection

Modern scholarship, in its effort to render a true account of the facts of existence, has placed much emphasis on what is sometimes called the historical method of study. The presupposition of this method is that the essence of reality lies in development, growth, and adaptation, whether the reality sought is that of an organic formation, an institution, or an idea. It is assumed that one cannot satisfactorily understand a thing until one knows the sources from which it sprang, the processes by which it came into being, and the changes which it has experienced in becoming adapted to its …

Four Fundamental Factors In The Instability Of The American Home, Harold Joseph Miller Jan 1935

Four Fundamental Factors In The Instability Of The American Home, Harold Joseph Miller

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The family may be defined as a group of interacting personalities of neer tie or blood-kin; namely, husband, wife, children, and may include grand parents. The origin of the family is not clear, since we find marriage in a rather highly developed form among the most primitive tribes. The family has taken on different forms in various places and under varying circumstances. Perhaps monogamy, the union of one man and one woman, is the most prevalent fore of marriage, not only in the United States but among all peoples and in all ages. Polygyny, the union of one man with several …

The Church Reform Of Henry Viii A Product Of The Rennissance, Theo. Hoyer Dec 1934

The Church Reform Of Henry Viii A Product Of The Rennissance, Theo. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Two more points I should like to stress to show how the soil was long prepared for just such a revolt against Rome as the English Reformation brought. As before stated, abuses like the immorality of the clergy and the scandalous indulgence traffic were never so prominent in England as on the Continent. Some one may think of the monasteries; but I shall speak of them later. But there were things that may also be called abuses in the regimen of the Church, which may seem little when we compare them with others, which, however, like a steadily growing toothache, …

Externalism And Sacramentalism, P. E. Kretzmann Oct 1934

Externalism And Sacramentalism, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the worship of God in the Old Testament in the form of so-called public services was first instituted, it had a very simple form. We are told that in the time of Enos men began to call upon the name of the Lord, that is, to proclaim the name of the Lord Jehovah, Gen. 4, 26. This preaching or teaching was clearly a sacramental act, just as the bringing of sacrifices, as in the case of Abel, was a sacrificial act, very likely attended by prayer.

The Gregorian Chant, P. E. Kretzmann Sep 1934

The Gregorian Chant, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

What is the orign1 of the so-called Gregorian Chant? That is the question asked by Dickinson in his splendid monograph on music in the Western Church. He himself interestingly expounds his question: "There is hardly a more interesting question in the whole history of music; for this chant is the basis of the whole magnificent structure of medieval church song and, in a certain sense of all modern music, and it can be traced back unbroken to the earliest years of the Christian Church. the most persistent and fruitful form of art that the modem world has known."
