To Know And To Do: A Review Article On Training Children In The Work Of Worship, George W. Hoyer Apr 1966

To Know And To Do: A Review Article On Training Children In The Work Of Worship, George W. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Learning How Children Worship is the title of a recent book by Grace W. McGavran. So many things are left unsaid in this book about the God who is to be worshiped and about the tremendous things which that God has done and does to make worship by the children of men possible that the critical theological reader might miss the significance of the major thing which is being said. Miss McGavran poses the question: "Are the children aware of the times of worship and what it should be for them - a conscious effort to enter into the presence …

Luther Against Erasmus, James I. Packer Apr 1966

Luther Against Erasmus, James I. Packer

Concordia Theological Monthly

On Sept. 6, 1524, Desiderius Erasmus, the foremost literary man of his day, sat in his study writing a letter to a distinguished friend and patron, Henry VIII, King of England. In the course of his letter came the words: ''The die is cast. The little book on free-will has seen the light of day." He was referring to his Diatribe seu collatio de libero arbitrio ("Discussion or Conference Concerning Free Will"), which had been published at Basel five days earlier. He wrote more truly than he knew. The die was now cast indeed. A Rubicon had been crossed, and …

The Unity Of The Church And Her Worship, Walter E. Buszin Apr 1966

The Unity Of The Church And Her Worship, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

To possess a good understanding of the worship of the church one must possess as well an understanding of the doctrine of the church. Both, the church and her worship, are unique; each shares significant characteristics of the other. Both are creations of the Holy Spirit; both are spiritual in their very essence. The church can neither thrive nor exist without worship. Christian worship, on the other hand, is inconceivable without the church. The church is not only the locus operandi of all true Christian worship; it is also the agency of the Holy Spirit and as such prompts the …

The Use Of The Exodus In Interpreting History, Elaine Marie Prevallet Mar 1966

The Use Of The Exodus In Interpreting History, Elaine Marie Prevallet

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our study takes the complex of traditions grouped around the exodus as its point of departure. We shall consider the use made of this event at four stages in Israel's history and attempt to determine two factors: (1) whether the prophetic interpretation of the exodus event at a given period in Israel's history has been shaped by the historical situation and (2) whether the exodus event is used to interpret the historical situation. Finally, we may be able to draw some conclusions relative both to the Israelite view and use of history.

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer Mar 1966

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the first section, we dealt with the language of preaching. Can it be understood? Does God speak and act in it? In the second we dealt with the method of finding and conveying Biblical truth in preaching. Have current Biblical studies a contribution to make to the pastor as he sets about on his task of preparing and delivering sermons? The third article does not turn away from these questions and processes, but it locates them in their setting: the Christian church. Ours is a time of rediscovery of the meaning of the church.

The Theologian's Craft, John Warwick Montgomery Feb 1966

The Theologian's Craft, John Warwick Montgomery

Concordia Theological Monthly

Scientists are generally at a loss to know precisely what theologians do. Mailmen deliver letters; bartenders serve numerous varieties of firewater; otorhinolaryngologists concern themselves with throats, ears, and noses: but what exactly do theologians endeavor to accomplish? The aura of mystery surrounding theological activity troubles not merely the scientist, who generally has a clear-eyed view of his own professional function, but also the so-called "average man," who, though his awareness of his own role in life may be exceedingly vague, is even more troubled by the peculiarities of "religious" vocations. The wry comment of the parishioner, ''We take care of …

The New Hermeneutic And Preaching, Richard R. Caemmerer Feb 1966

The New Hermeneutic And Preaching, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The first unit in this series discussed the implications for Christian preaching of current studies in the philosophy and theology of language, studies which are usually identified by some such term as linguistic analysis and connected with names like Ian Ramsey and Frederick Ferré As we now turn to the contemporary study of the Sacred Scriptures, we do not make a clean break with the preceding discussion. The Biblical studies reveal the dominant question: What is the language of faith? The purpose of this review, however, is not to analyze the field of Biblical studies in general but to assess …

The Vanguard (Vol. 13, No. 2), Mar 1966, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Good Christian people often ask members of the staff of the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America, "What can we do? What can we do to become responsibly involved in the civil rights struggle?" There are many things that can and must be done. A plan that has been in the process of development for a number of years, is what LHRAA has called the Rural Summer Vacation Project. Children from the inner city, mostly from underprivileged homes-Indian American, Negro, Appalachian Mountain, et al-are taken into the homes of "host parents" for one or two weeks in rural, small-town, or …
