Life And Death In The Prophets, Martin Buerger May 1967

Life And Death In The Prophets, Martin Buerger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The study of the teachings of the prophets concerning life and death is of benefit to the Christian of the New Testament era. The same problems vex him in his daily life. Grief at times appears to overcome joys. Catastrophes ruin prosperity. Death takes away life. Political maneuvering in the world raises the question of its relationship with the intent of our God in the heavens. The Christian faith, however, confidently assures the believer that God's will is always done and that even the loss of physical life is not the final chapter, the absolute end of man. He will …

Rudolf Bultmann's Concept Of Gnosticism And Some Contemporary Criticism Of It, Theodore Eisold May 1967

Rudolf Bultmann's Concept Of Gnosticism And Some Contemporary Criticism Of It, Theodore Eisold

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The primary purpose of this thesis is to examine Rudolf Bultmann's concept of Gnosticism to gain a fuller understanding of Bultmann's use of this term as well as to gain an insight into Gnosticism as it may have affected New Testament literature. The investigation seems necessary because of the many uncertainties connected with Gnosticism and with the backgrounds of early Christianity.

Reality As A Basis For Religious Education, Donald Jerke

Master of Divinity Thesis

It is the purpose of the author to present in detail the theological, philosophical, and educational presuppositions and understandings of the Educational Center and indicate their application to the Center's unique educational method. In Chapter Two those concepts are presented and terms defined which express the Center's view of existence, its religious dimensions, its relationship to the Christian faith, and its implications for the educational task of the Church. Chapter Three presents an overview of the Center's methodology and its application to the structure of particular courses and the development of educational programs at the parish level. In Chapter Four …

The Christian And Social Responsibility, Robert J. Werberig Dec 1966

The Christian And Social Responsibility, Robert J. Werberig

Concordia Theological Monthly

What is the Christian's role in the many-faceted, restless, and paradoxical society of the 60s? Should his function as a Christian citizen include more than merely "holding a private opinion" on the issues of our times? Does his commitment to Christ imply something more than "contributing to welfare" in face of the fact that over two-thirds of his generation lives out life under starvation conditions? Is there a valid place for the voice and action of Christianity within the vortex of change, which today upsets whole cultures, often with crushing and dehumanizing effects to people?

The Freudian Super-Ego: A Psychological And Theological Study Of Conscience, Lawrence Rosenkoetter Nov 1966

The Freudian Super-Ego: A Psychological And Theological Study Of Conscience, Lawrence Rosenkoetter

Bachelor of Divinity

The primary purpose of this study is to examine Freud's concept of the super-ego and its related concepts. This examination will be conducted on the basis of Freud's collected works. Three monographs of Freud are of particular importance in a consideration of the super-ego and its related concepts; these works are “Mourning and Melancholia”, “The Ego and the Id”, and “The Dissolution of the Super-ego”.

The Marxist Concept Of Man: A Christian's Critique, Edward Trost Nov 1966

The Marxist Concept Of Man: A Christian's Critique, Edward Trost

Master of Divinity Thesis

Many problems facing the contemporary church stem from its past and present attempts to dichotomize man. Having split man's person into body and soul, material and spiritual, the church then demands allegiance to "either-or." The decision belongs to man. Either he flees the world and its possessions, or the world and its pleasures possess him. Today, more than ever before, churchmen realize that this decision is not so clearly drawn. Just as he is not exclusively material (the Marxist heresy), so man is not solely spirit (Christianity's overstatement). No longer can categories be labeled so neatly: religious and secular. Never …

The Church's Approach To Death And The Funeral, William Matzat Nov 1966

The Church's Approach To Death And The Funeral, William Matzat

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper, therefore, will attempt to point out the approach which the church should take regarding the various cultural practices prevalent in the American funeral rite. After a brief historical perspective, it will examine the theological concepts of the body, death and the resurrection, and the psychological concepts of grief and mourning. With this as a basis for analysis, some of the cultural practices of the American funeral rite will be considered.

The Historical Jesus, The Kerygmatic Christ, And The Eschatological Community, John H. Elliott Sep 1966

The Historical Jesus, The Kerygmatic Christ, And The Eschatological Community, John H. Elliott

Concordia Theological Monthly

We are about to discuss a subject that is quite difficult - if not impossible - to treat in completely detached or neutral fashion. For this is a subject which forces a man, every man, to take a position and to make a decision. The earnestness of this decision is to be found in the fact that this is not merely a subject for academic disputation. It is a question of theology and faith. The subject historically has been treated in terms of a question, or a "riddle," as one English scholar has called it. The question or riddle is …

Ministry And Future: Contradictions And Hope, Martin E. Marty Jul 1966

Ministry And Future: Contradictions And Hope, Martin E. Marty

Concordia Theological Monthly

Now men celebrate an event in time: traversing the years from Log Cabins to Luther Tower. Apparent contradictions abound: the cabin, a modest and diffident Statement of an exile group. The tower, an ambitious and almost proud statement of a people with a sense of arrival. Men remember both and looking at them together see what they might otherwise have overlooked: the investment of hope in a ministry.

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske Jun 1966

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to review the various interpretations of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration throughout the history of the Church, to examine them in the light of their environments, and finally to reach a conclusion as to the meaning of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration on the basis of an exegetical study or the text in its historical background. It is contended that once a true understanding of baptismal regeneration has been reached other problems dealing with baptism will be readily resolved. It is also contended that with a right understanding or baptismal regeneration the danger …

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman Jun 1966

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper, then, is to compare and contrast the various interpretations in an attempt to discover their strengths and weaknesses. If possible, some guidelines will be suggested for the interpretation of this passage and probabilities will be noted where answers are unavailable. The complex question of historical background will be discussed as it relates to the various interpretations, but it cannot be treated in depth.

An Examination Of The Constituent Elements Of Human Nature, Paul R. Lund May 1966

An Examination Of The Constituent Elements Of Human Nature, Paul R. Lund

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "An age-old problem still facing the church and one which still finds advocates on both sides in modern evangelical thought is the question as to whether man consists of body, soul and spirit or only of body and spirit (or soul). The former position would insist that the constituent elements of man' s nature are three and that there is some essential distinction between the Biblical terms "soul" and "spirit" . The latter position insists that there are only two distinct elements in man's nature and that there is no essential distinction (although many would admit a functional distinction) …

The Concept Of Free Will In The Lutheran Confessions And In Selected Writings Of Soren Kierkegaard, David Klumpp May 1966

The Concept Of Free Will In The Lutheran Confessions And In Selected Writings Of Soren Kierkegaard, David Klumpp

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Ultimately freedom is a spiritual concept. Our Lord said, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free." Saint Paul underscores the freedom that comes to the follower of Christ in the words, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death. " This freedom is of a different nature from the freedom so ardently sought after today, but …

She came from the Tuvalu and was dropped off on Sikaiana by a trader during her pregnancy, sometime in the late 1800s. She warned traders that life would change from contact with Europeans. her descendants felt a certain …

The Vanguard (Vol. 13, No. 5), July 1966, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

The Lutheran Church in America, meeting in convention June 21-29 in Kansas City, Missouri, passed two recommendations which commit that church body to a broader and more intensive ministry to the Indian American. The two recommendations were embodied in the convention report of the LCA's Board of American Missions, and grew out of a special study conducted for the Board by Miss Henrietta Lund, consultant to the United Nations for the National Lutheran Council. Miss Lund has done a number of comprehensive studies for the LCA and other Lutheran church bodies on various aspects of the Church's ministry to the …
