Religion In The Works Of Heinrich Heine, Ellen Frances Deruchie Jan 1946

Religion In The Works Of Heinrich Heine, Ellen Frances Deruchie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The life of Heinrich Heine presents many contradictions. He was a militant Hebrew who never held to the tenets of the Jewish faith, a Christian who admired Jesus, but despised the dogmas of Christianity, a German who loved his country with all his heart but became a voluntary expatriate. In addition, he was a poet who could rise to the very heights or lyricism, but then offend his readers with an outburst of mockery or blasphemy. With a mind so tormented, and a character so complex, it is no wonder that his writings present so many conflicting views. Only one …

Trends And Tendencies Of The Times, Arnold Guebert Nov 1945

Trends And Tendencies Of The Times, Arnold Guebert

Concordia Theological Monthly

We tum now to a discussion of trends in the social and economic field. It has become almost a habit to refer to our times as a period of crisis or transition. Writers on social subjects invariably predict great changes in the entire structure of our society. An English economist recently summed up the situation in this way: "It is my profound conviction that we are standing today at the turning point between two civilizations, one of those turning-points in history not unlike the first or second century, the Renaissance, or the 17th century in England. The transition from an …

Trends And Tendencies Of The Times, A. Guebert

Ours is a complex civilization. Indeed it may be said that the world has never been as complex as it is today. There are in almost every field of human endeavor so many trends and tendencies that we would have material for many conferences if each of them were treated even briefly. We shall, therefore, limit ourselves to a treatment of such matters as seem to be of peculiar interest and significance at this time.

Christian Fellowship, C. August Hardt Aug 1945

Christian Fellowship, C. August Hardt

Concordia Theological Monthly

After having dwelt at some length on the manifestations of Christian fellowship, we now come to consider restrictions upon such manifestations. Let us begin by stating the obvious: There are restrictions; not man-made, originating in the decrees of church councils or in synodical resolutions, to be sure, but imposed by God Himself, the Head of the Church. To us this may seem self-evident, yet it is not conceded by all who lay claim to the name "Christian." There are those who aver that Christian fellowship must be unrestricted.

The Tabernacle Of Jehovah, Herman R. Mayer Jul 1945

The Tabernacle Of Jehovah, Herman R. Mayer

Bachelor of Divinity

Perhaps some of the most neglected chapters in the Bible are those which give a concise description of the sanctuary. They are neglected by Bible readers and students alike. Many who read through the Exodus account find the subject matter lacking in excitement or too involved to give it a little thought. Even Bible students are inclined to read through this particular section in such haste that they remove every opportunity of giving the structure of the Sanctuary careful consideration. A study of the Sanctuary therefore should be a challange to every one who holds a claim on interest in …

Shinto The Principle Of Japan, George Shibata Jun 1945

Shinto The Principle Of Japan, George Shibata

Bachelor of Divinity

Our thesis is: Shinto is the principle of the Japanese nation. It is manifested in the love of the people for the nation. As for the individual in his relationship to God, Shinto leaves the matter to each soul. But the two factors are so closely related that they militate against the successful introduction of Christianity.

Our study of Shinto will be, first of all, the consideration of the historical circumstances and influences in which Shinto developed. Then the traditional myths will be analyzed. Finally, the resulting State Shinto and the sectarian Shinto will be described.

Mysticism In Roman Catholic Theology, Elmer William Matthias Jun 1945

Mysticism In Roman Catholic Theology, Elmer William Matthias

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is not to present an extensive survey of Catholic mysticism. The field is too broad to do that in a paper of this type. Only the salient features are mentioned with the view of presenting the fundamentals so that the working principles of mysticism are laid bare. With this object in mind the writer proceeded.

The Cosmology Of Scripture, Leander M. Waechter Jun 1945

The Cosmology Of Scripture, Leander M. Waechter

Bachelor of Divinity

In these days of scientific consciousness a study of the cosmological teachings of Scripture should be or interest and value to the Bible student. For the average man of the twentieth century has a new measure by which he computes the value of all things, material, philosophical, or spiritual. Being taught from early childhood to think largely in the terms of science, it is inevitable that the modern man should reply to every problem which challenges his interest, "What does science say on the subject?"

The Work Of The Holy Spirit According To Romans Eight, Robert Charles Stade Jun 1945

The Work Of The Holy Spirit According To Romans Eight, Robert Charles Stade

Bachelor of Divinity

Thus before we actually delve into our subject, the work of the Holy Spirit as presented in chapter eight, we shall extablish the connection between this chapter and the two previous ones.

The Personal Wisdom In Proverbs Eight, Rudolph E. Honsey Jun 1945

The Personal Wisdom In Proverbs Eight, Rudolph E. Honsey

Bachelor of Divinity

It will be the burden of this treatise to establish the fact that in the eighth chapter of the Book of Proverbs we have a direct reference to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This we shall do on the basis of six Hebrew expressions which occur in verses 22 to 31. Then we shall consider the appropriateness of the term תכהת, as well as related terms, as ascribed to the Son of God. Finally, we shall consider the Personal Wisdom as our comfort in life and in death.

Lutheranism In The Region Of New York Until The Time Of Falckner, Eugene F. Helms Jun 1945

Lutheranism In The Region Of New York Until The Time Of Falckner, Eugene F. Helms

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of the Lutheran Church in the region of New York has its beginning contemporaneously with the beginning of the state of New York. Already at the time of the earliest explorations of that territory and the settlement of the first Dutch colony, we find traces of Lutheranism. True, the Lutherans never were a very large force; and, as a body, they had 1ittle to do with the shaping of New York’s development; nevertheless, Lutheranism was present. There was, also a nernber of individuals of, whose secular work the Lutheran Church can well be proud.

In our discussion we …

Albrecht Durer And The Lutheran Reformation, William Scar Jun 1945

Albrecht Durer And The Lutheran Reformation, William Scar

Bachelor of Divinity

This dissertation is a study of Albrecht Dürer's life and work with a theologioa1 interest. This is in no way a complete discussion of the artist's life and works. The selection of works treated in chapter four is not a good cross section of his drawings, woodcuts. copper engravings, etchings, and paintings. They are a careful selection of his works of art showing how he gradually employed true Christian or Biblical teaching in his religious subjects. The author endeavors to show in this paper that Albrecht Dürer made a contribution to the work of Martin Luther and his associates as …

The Theology Of The Psalms Of David, Paul G. Bretscher Jun 1945

The Theology Of The Psalms Of David, Paul G. Bretscher

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is an attempt to reconstruct from the poetry of David the chief articles of his religious creed.

The presentation of this subject is limited in several ways. In the first place, only those Psalms are included, which are stated in the Hebrew text to have been composed by David.

I Believe In The Resurrection Of The Body, W. F. Beck Mar 1945

I Believe In The Resurrection Of The Body, W. F. Beck

Concordia Theological Monthly

The upper house of the Convocation of Canterbury, Church of England, has decided to delete the phrase "resurrection of the body" at cremation ceremonies. One bishop said that young people scientifically trained are "not so much indignant as amused at the phrase." Whenever they reach these words in the Apostles' Creed, they must experience a limp in the tongue.

The Stabilizing Power Of Christianity In Personality Disturbances, Richard Delventhal Jan 1945

The Stabilizing Power Of Christianity In Personality Disturbances, Richard Delventhal

Bachelor of Divinity

Christianity, or Christian theology, is not only theoretical but also highly practical. Christianity teaches the Way of Life, which means, not only the life to come, but also this life, here and now. In its fullest application to the individual, it not only prepares one for the future life in heaven, but also prepares one for a normal and more abundant life in this world.
