The primary purpose of this work is to call attention to the existence of Latin words in the Greek New Testament and to present an objective study of them. As a corollary to this study, the impact of Graeco-Roman culture upon Judea in terms of these words, their synonyms, and related words is pointed out. Glimpses of the background of the New Testament figures afforded through this study lend perspective to the New Testament pages.

Present Emphases In Christian Education, Burt E. Coody Jan 1949

Present Emphases In Christian Education, Burt E. Coody

Graduate Thesis Collection

Because of the enormity of the field [Christian education] and in order to be very specific the subject matter will be confined to the curricula of the Sunday Church Schools. More specifically, the aim is to examine the present-day emphases that are to be found in the curricula of Christian education and to offer suggestions for the blending of these emphases that will add to the force and effectiveness of the great job already being done in this area of Christian education.

The History And Development Of Franklin, Idaho During The Period 1860-1900, James Ira Young

Theses and Dissertations

This study of Franklin, Idaho has been gratifying in that the author has partially satisfied his curiosity as to the background of the Mormon settlers of the community. Probably there will never be a complete and decisive study made of this community; although, the author has attempted to present an accurate and satisfactory history of Franklin.
Purpose. The purpose in writing the history of Franklin is to present a more adequate and satisfactory knowledge of the community. The study has been divided into six major parts.

Comparative Study Of Judaism And Shinto, Alice Elsa Smith Jan 1949

Comparative Study Of Judaism And Shinto, Alice Elsa Smith

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The forces that have arisen within and without mankind have been responsible for all that has occurred upon the earth in the name of religion, and the greatest force without is God. In the words of James Martineau, "This world is part of the great cosmos, all of whose forces . . . find their unity in God, and whose laws are but the modes and order of His thoughts. In this field, his is not simple First Cause, but Sole Cause; all forces being one, and no force other than his."1 The greatest force within is man's rationalization …

Roma Semper Eadem, L. W. Spitz Nov 1948

Roma Semper Eadem, L. W. Spitz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Rome ever the same! So says Rome, and her opponents agree; but there is agreement only in the choice of words, not in the sense or connotation. Rome predicates her assertion on the claim that she is the Church founded by Christ and by Him built on Peter, so that even the gates of hell cannot prevail against her. Her opponents, on the other hand, regard her merely as an organization against which the gates of hell have already prevailed in a large measure. Rome presumes to trace her organization and dogma - of course more fully developed in the …

The Inaugural Vision Of Ezekiel, W. R. Roehrs Oct 1948

The Inaugural Vision Of Ezekiel, W. R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Ezekiel is the strangest figure in the goodly fellowship of the prophets . . . probably no book of the Old Testament is as little read as his, and it may well be the least popular, as it is the least known of the Old Testament." This is the verdict on the Book of Ezekiel in the most recent book on the Prophets of the Old Testament. It may comfort the modern Bible student to know that it has troubled the exegetes, Jewish and Christian, through the centuries. Luther quotes Jerome as saying that the early rabbis considered its contents …

Is Doctrinal Unity A Luxury?, Th. Engelder Aug 1948

Is Doctrinal Unity A Luxury?, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

By the grace of God we have been won for the proposition that the adherence to all doctrine revealed is not a luxury, but a necessity. And by the grace of God we repel, in the first place, all the arguments to the contrary. The argument is advanced that we Lutherans distinguish between fundamental and non-fundamental articles and thus eo ipso declare the non-fundamental articles to be unnecessary. Nothing could be further from the truth. To be sure, there is a great distinction between the fundamental articles and the non-fundamental ones. We say that the fundamental articles are necessary for …

Brief Studies In The Prophets, L. Fuerbringer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In our first article on the Prophet Zechariah we spoke in general of his person and his book. We dwelt, furthermore, On a particularly beautiful and significant symbolical action, the crowning of the Priest-King, a clear prophecy of the Messiah. In the present article we shall briefly consider four other Messianic prophecies found in the third section of the book. These prophecies lend to the entire work a special character.
