The Paperback In The Pew, Donald L. Duffner Aug 1961

The Paperback In The Pew, Donald L. Duffner

Concordia Theological Monthly

To understand contemporary man that we might better reach him with the kerygma, we do well to listen to his spokesmen. A. L. Kershaw points out the need to listen to the "sensitive spirits" among the contemporary poets, novelists, playwrights, artists, and composers of the day, who, he avers, "have been far more sensitive to the judgment of God on the hollowness of our life and society than have the majority of religious leaders."

The Problem Of Factions Versus Essential Unity In The Church Of Corinth: A Study Of Causative Factors And Paul's Answer To The Problem, Fred H. Luthy Jul 1961

The Problem Of Factions Versus Essential Unity In The Church Of Corinth: A Study Of Causative Factors And Paul's Answer To The Problem, Fred H. Luthy

Graduate Thesis Collection

I have long been interested in Paul's writings, his various doctrinal viewpoints, and the manner in which he dealt with problems as they developed during his ministry. Certainly, the Corinthian Churoh had its problems, and they were eerious problems. Not the least of these was the matter of a faotious spirit whioh seemed to prevail among the members and whioh was keeping the oongregation from full effectiveness in its witness and work for Jesus Christ. What were the background oonditions out of whioh this Corinthian Churoh oame forth? What types of people comprised this congregation? How and why did these …

The Protestant Church And Segregration, Karl Thiele Jun 1961

The Protestant Church And Segregration, Karl Thiele

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this study to investigate the factors in our society, secular and religious that have contributed to and maintained the paradox and thus make it possible for us to better be able to eliminate this absurdity. Needless to say, it is impossible to discuss all the factors relating to this paradox, but those factors affecting and primarily related to the church are treated.

Adapatation Of The Religious Dance And Similar Physical Movements In The Indigenous Church, Manfred Berndt Jun 1961

Adapatation Of The Religious Dance And Similar Physical Movements In The Indigenous Church, Manfred Berndt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This is just one example of a cultural problem that raises a painful question for the Western Christian: “Why is it that, while the Church, particularly in her worship, has done so much to use God's gifts of music, art, and. drama, it has almost completely ignored or condemned the one art that combines these three--the dance?" Can the dance be a vehicle to glorify God, not merely in recreation, but also in worship? It is to this problem that this study addresses itself. It intends to examine the reverent and irreverent use of the dance in the history of …

Wesley's Thought On Faith And Reason In Christian Redemption, Vernon H. Haas May 1961

Wesley's Thought On Faith And Reason In Christian Redemption, Vernon H. Haas

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Christian theology has always embodied the ideas of faith and reason as basic principles in the concept of Christian redemption. Likewise, human experience daily embraces, revolves around, and finds integration through faith and reason.

The relationship of faith and reason has been much less distinct. Throughout the Christian era a great difference of opinion has existed especially on the relationship of the two ideas in redemption. Usually this difference is held consequent to some particular views of the nature of man. Thus, for example, faith and reason are set in direct contrast to each other. One may be good while …

Requirements For A Confessional Lutheran Dogmatics For Use In Training Filipino Pastors, Robert Mcamis May 1961

Requirements For A Confessional Lutheran Dogmatics For Use In Training Filipino Pastors, Robert Mcamis

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Our Lutheran Church was late in beginning work in the Philippines. We do not have much time as American missionaries to work in this field. We have a real challenge before us in building an indigenous Lutheran Church in a short time. This paper is concerned with the doctrinal aapect of the indigenous church. · If a strong, evangelical Lutheran Church is to take root and grow in the Philippines, it must be built upon the right foundation. This must be done in the training of students for the ministry who can better translate these theological concepts to their own …

The Vicarious Atonement In John Quenstedt, Robert D. Preus Feb 1961

The Vicarious Atonement In John Quenstedt, Robert D. Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

The last decades have witnessed some significant and provocative studies in the doctrine of the Atonement. Two of these studies particularly have stimulated interest by the way in which they have broken with the old Lutheran and Protestant treatment of the doctrine while attempting at the same time to be entirely Biblical in the approach and presentation of the doctrine. On the one hand, Gustaf Aulen classifies the post-Reformation teaching as only a slight and more logical modification of the doctrine of Anselm, a teaching dominated by the idea of satisfaction and the legal motif. In contrast to this, Aulen …
