The Revelation Of God In The Revelation To St John, Williard Mueller May 1968

The Revelation Of God In The Revelation To St John, Williard Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The question to which this present paper addresses itself is that concerning the nature of revelation as this is reflected in the Revelation to John. It asks whether God's revelation in that writing is of Himself or of facts concerning Himself; what the source of the revelation is and in what manner it takes place; and whether revelation is an event of the past, the present, or the future. The Apocalypse is examined first to determine if its message can be clearly enough understood today to provide evidence for this investigation. The investigation then turns to the language describing revelation …

The Significance Of The Concepts Διαθηκη And ‘Αιμα Toward Understanding A Passover Background Of The Lord's Supper, Armand Sailer Mar 1968

The Significance Of The Concepts Διαθηκη And ‘Αιμα Toward Understanding A Passover Background Of The Lord's Supper, Armand Sailer

Bachelor of Divinity

The importance of such a study is not just that the events in the life of Jesus be clarified and harmonized, but that the real meaning of the Supper may be ascertained. If the Supper has no connection with the Passover, our theology of the Eucharist needs to be re-evaluated and harmonized to whatever is the real intent of Christ's institution. The aim of this study is to investigate the significance of the concepts διαθήκη and αί̑μα toward such a Passover understanding of the Supper. Chapter II will examine the four accounts of the institution, evaluate the critical variants, and …

Living With The Brothers In The Lord, Arthur Carl Piepkorn Mar 1968

Living With The Brothers In The Lord, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Nov. 11, 1967-today-is the 49th anniversary of the armistice that initiated the end of the war between the Central Powers and the Allied Powers. It is also the 484th anniversary of the baptism of Martin Luther. On this day I as a Lutheran "brother in the Lord" am greatly pleased to have been asked to address this Roman Catholic diocesan Institute on Ecumenism. The fact that this day is both the anniversary of an armistice and the anniversary of a baptism is not, I hope, without its symbolic significance.

A Sachkritik Of First Corinthians 13 Authenticity And Integrity, John Hollar Feb 1968

A Sachkritik Of First Corinthians 13 Authenticity And Integrity, John Hollar

Bachelor of Divinity

The First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians happens to be one of those documents of the early Christian community which was to become a subject of debate, sooner or later, for the form critical school of exegesis. Evidence for this issues from the fact that it was in 1910 when Johannes Weiss wrote what still remains as the classical form-critical analysis of First Corinthians. Then in1912 Adolf Harnack presented the second great contribution of scholarship concerning this chapter of agape, with his article "The Apostle Paul's Hymn of Love and Its Religious-Historical Significance." From this time on it almost …

Private Confession: A 20th-Century Issue Seen From A 16th-Century Perspective, Theodore Jungkuntz Feb 1968

Private Confession: A 20th-Century Issue Seen From A 16th-Century Perspective, Theodore Jungkuntz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every knowledgeable theologian today is aware of the resurging interest in the question of private confession, i. e., auricular confession, or more precisely, the individual nature of confession. From professional theological journals to professional journals of psychology and psychiatry, from popular Time and Newsweek magazines to well-documented monographs and religious encyclopedia articles the question is being raised and answered in a variety of ways. The following is an attempt to permit the results of a thorough discussion of the issue more than four centuries ago in the decade from 1530 to 1540 to be of service in the contemporary search …

Eucharistic Sacrifice: An Expression Of Good For Others, William Hempel

Bachelor of Divinity

We would hope to demonstrate that the entire topic of Eucharistic sacrifice might be placed upon a much broader base than has been the case prior to this. It is hoped that this study will reveal the possibility of doing this with7some profit as well as increase our present understanding of the historic background of eucharistic sacrifice.

Sanctification In Romans Chapter Six, R. Larry Shelton Jan 1968

Sanctification In Romans Chapter Six, R. Larry Shelton

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

One of the central themes of St. Paul is the concept of union with Christ. The apostle deals with this subject at length in Romans chapter six. Using the rite of baptism as a basis, Paul shows how the believer becomes united with Christ in an interpersonal sharing of spirits. He then points out the implications of this relationship for sanctification. Thus sanctification is vitally connected with the relationship of the believer to Christ.

An Archaeological Survey Of Goshen Valley, Utah County, Central Utah, Leland Gilsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a field report on the archaeological sites surveyed by the author in Goshen Valley, Utah County, Utah. The survey has the threefold objectives of: (1) surveying and recording of sites in Goshen Valley; (2) providing information on the material culture of the ancient inhabitants of the valley; and (3) discovering whether there was a dividing line during the Fremont occupation between the Provo and Sevier regions as outlined by Jones (1961), Green (1964), and Ambler (1966).

To this end, seventy-four sites are described along with the related material culture with an analysis of the material culture in …

A Folk History Of The Manti Temple: A Study Of The Folklore And Traditions Connected With The Settlement Of Manti, Utah, And The Building Of The Temple, Barbara Lee Hargis

Theses and Dissertations

For some time I have been collecting folk material of the pioneers of Sanpete County, Utah, and their subsequent building of the Manti Temple. A few of the county's senior citizens witnessed part of the construction in the late 1870's and 1880's and the dedication in 1888 of the Temple. Many more are descendants of men and women who were directly involved in the building of the Temple and in the early work done there after its construction.

The stories that these people tell are significant. A collection of them represents a rich folk history of a religious, pioneering people …
