Supporting Motor, Cognitive, And Psychosocial Functions For Children And Youth With Acquired Brain Injury: A Scoping Review, Quandra Shanks, Angela Labrie Blackwell

Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to an injury to the brain that is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma (Brain Injury Association [BIA], 2023). ABI is an umbrella term for all brain injuries, typically classified as traumatic (e.g., sports injury, fall) or non-traumatic (e.g., stroke, infection) (Wales et al., 2021). It is considered one of the leading causes of death and disability for individuals of all ages (Riccardi & Lundine, 2022). The BIA (2023) reports that ages 0-4 and 15-19 are at greater risk for brain injury. The severity of ABI among pediatrics is more severe than …

Development Of An Occupation-Based Program For Hispanic Women With Breast Cancer, Tara Licon, Leslie Khan-Farooqi, Mary Ann Smith Jul 2023

Development Of An Occupation-Based Program For Hispanic Women With Breast Cancer, Tara Licon, Leslie Khan-Farooqi, Mary Ann Smith

Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Currently, available programs for breast cancer patients do not consider the specific needs of Hispanic women or their preferred occupations. The goal of the capstone project was to develop an occupational therapy (OT) program that is personalized to Hispanic women with breast cancer at every stage of their recovery. The program was informed by lifestyle redesign. After reviewing the literature and conducting a needs assessment the capstone student created a program titled ‘Beautiful, Bold, Breast Cancer’ which contains five detailed treatment sessions.

Bridging The Transition To Housing: A Social Justice Framework To Guide The Practice Of Occupational Therapists And Other Professionals Who Support Individuals With Experiences Of Homelessness (2nd Ed), Carrie Marshall, Rebecca Gewurtz, Skye Barbic, Laurence Roy, Abrial Cooke, Rosemary Lysaght

Occupational Therapy Publications

Occupational therapists have been supporting individuals who experience homelessness for several decades in their roles as community mental health therapists, on in-patient units, in traumatic brain injury programs, and in multiple other roles. Only recently, however, has this area of practice been acknowledged as distinct. Homelessness is growing in several high and middle-income countries worldwide. Occupational therapists have increasingly expressed an interest in gaining the knowledge and skills to effectively support individuals who experience homelessness, and in recent years, research in occupational therapy that focuses specifically on persons who experience homelessness has grown. The majority of individuals who have been …

Self-Efficacy With Telehealth Examination: The Doctor Of Physical Therapy Student Perspective, Derrick F. Campbell, Jean-Michel Brismee, Brad Allen, Troy L. Hooper, Manuel A. Domenech, Kathleen J. Manella

HPD Articles

Introduction: The shift to telehealth exposed gaps in our understanding of how physical therapy students perceive patient assessment in a remote situation using the examination component of the patient/client management (PCM) model. The purpose of the study was to compare Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students’ self-efficacy performing patient assessment using the examination component of the PCM model using telehealth compared with conventional examination. To achieve the purpose of this study, the Physical Therapist Self-Efficacy (PTSE) scale was used. More specifically, self-efficacy in clinical reasoning was measured using the following items: (1) PTSE total score (2) performance of tests …

Treatment Of Adult Spasticity With Botox (Onabotulinumtoxina): Development, Insights, And Impact, Alberto Esquenazi, Wolfgang H. Jost, Catherine C. Turkel, Theodore Wein, Rozalina Dimitrova

Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Papers

Upper and lower limb spasticity (ULS, LLS) often occur following a stroke or in patients with other neurological disorders, leading to difficulties in mobility and daily living and decreased quality of life. Prior to the use of onabotulinumtoxinA, antispastic medications had limited efficacy and often caused sedation. Phenol injections were difficult for physicians to perform, painful, and led to tissue destruction. The success of onabotulinumtoxinA in treating cervical dystonia led to its use in spasticity. However, many challenges characterized the development of onabotulinumtoxinA for adult spasticity. The wide variability in the presentation of spasticity among patients rendered it difficult to …

Effects Of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation On Spine Joint Position Sense In Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Case Report, Eunice J. Garces

Philippine Journal of Physical Therapy

Introduction. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), described as a complex three-dimensional spinal deformity, is thought to affect neurophysiological processes that result in a loss of proprioceptive input. The main purpose of this case study is to investigate the effect of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) on spine joint reposition (JR) sense in a 20-year-old with AIS.

Methods/ Case Description. The subject was a 20-year-old college student with moderate dextrothoracic and levolumbar scoliosis. She has structural scoliosis-related impaired posture, as evidenced by findings of impaired JR sensation in all directions, postural deviations, and patient-reported deformity perception using the Walter Reed Visual Assessment Scale. …

Posture Care Management In School Based Settings For Children With Complex Physical Disabilities, Sabrina Rodriguez, Mary Jan Greer, Lee Ann Hoffman

Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Posture care management (PCM) is an intervention that helps protect a person’s body through different positions within different contexts. PCM is not a singular direct intervention as each person is different and has different needs. This process is especially important for those who cannot reposition themselves such as children with complex physical disabilities. These children rely mainly for caregivers and school staff this process since home and school are the main places they spend the beginning years of their lives. Therefore, it is important to educate caregivers and school staff on the guidelines of proper PCM to promote health, well-being, …
