(2013) Undergraduate Major And Other Factors’ Effects On Success In Counselor-Training, Trey Fitch, Shane Blasko, Chris Bardill
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
Counselor education programs need to understand what factors contribute to success of counseling students. In this study, the authors examined the influence of undergraduate major, undergraduate grade point average (UGPA), and length of time since last degree. The researchers collected archival data from a diverse sample of 110 counselors in training. The results of the study indicated no difference in success, as measured by graduate GPA and CPCE scores, based on undergraduate degree or years since graduations. However, UGPA was significantly correlated to both measures.

Dual licensed individuals are required to adhere to multiple ethical codes based on state licenses and regulations. Additionally, membership in professional associations require adherence to yet other ethical codes. In order to assist dually licensed professionals in Louisiana, a review of the ethical codes associated with such professional licenses and associations is provided. Ethical codes that differ are identified and discussed

(2013) African American Pastors And Mental Health Professionals: Referral Themes Identified Using Qualitative Research Methods, Lizzie L. West, Kathryn W. Van Asselt, Andrea Daines, Andre Judice
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
This research study explored the personal experiences of ten African American pastors, located in a south central state, through the use of basic interpretive, qualitative research and a phenomenological design for data analysis. A face-to-face, semi-structured interview methodology was used to examine how African American pastors referred their church members to mental health professionals. Concerns about referrals included not knowing any local therapists, potential cultural barriers such as financial costs and transportation needs, and wanting Christian counselors to work with their church members. This study found that these pastors would refer their church members to mental health professionals if they …

(2014) Narrative Therapy Eating Disorder Group For Adolescent Females, Caitlin Bach, Molly Holmes, Mike Saussaye
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
Current treatments for eating disorders leave much to be desired in both long and short term success rates. As such, there is a need for a more effective treatment, taking a new and creative approach to both the content and the process. This group, tailored for adolescent females with any of a variety of ED diagnoses, draws from narrative and art therapy, incorporating these to create a group with an emphasis on individual learning, growth, and self-discovery. Each group meeting combines psychosocial education, a specific activity, and group discussion to focus on a specific aspect of either eating disorder development …

BACKGROUND: Differences in responding to sensory stimuli, including sensory hyperreactivity (HYPER), hyporeactivity (HYPO), and sensory seeking (SEEK) have been observed in autistic individuals across sensory modalities, but few studies have examined the structure of these "supra-modal" traits in the autistic population.
METHODS: Leveraging a combined sample of 3868 autistic youth drawn from 12 distinct data sources (ages 3-18 years and representing the full range of cognitive ability), the current study used modern psychometric and meta-analytic techniques to interrogate the latent structure and correlates of caregiver-reported HYPER, HYPO, and SEEK within and across sensory modalities. Bifactor statistical indices were used to …

(2015) Ethical Gatekeeping For Lpc Supervisors, Christian J. Dean
(2015) Ethical Gatekeeping For Lpc Supervisors, Christian J. Dean
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
Counseling supervisors have an ethical responsibility to be gatekeepers to the profession and to protect the public from harm. When a Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor (LPC-S) in Louisiana is not also the Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor’s (PLPC) on-site supervisor, insight regarding the PLPC’s behaviors may be lacking and therefore decreases the ability of the LPC-S to identify potential remediation areas. The author presents a method to help supervision only LPC-Ss ensure their gatekeeping responsibilities through consented communications with on-site administrative supervisors.

(2015) Reflective Supervision As A Key Support For Counselors, Krystal M. Vaughn, Allison B. Boothe, Angela W. Keyes
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
Reflective supervision is a protected time and space for a counselor to consider his or her work from multiple perspectives with a trusted mental health professional (Shahmoon-Shanok, 2009). The authors present reflective supervision as an important component of on-going counselor practice that is separate from clinical supervision provided during counselor training. Theories of clinical and reflective supervision are discussed as they relate to the development of reflective practice for counselors. Reflective supervision is differentiated from clinical and administrative supervision as well as from periodic case consultation. The authors discuss how reflective supervision for counselors is a foundational component of their …

(2015) Utilizing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy With Bullied Obese Adolescents In Schools, Kellie Giorgio Camelford
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
In today's culture obesity is becoming an epidemic for individuals of all ages. Research shows that obese adolescents have higher risks of being the victims and perpetrators of bullying in a school setting. School counselors should focus on this specialized population as a way to create prevention and intervention strategies. This paper reviews current literature demonstrating obese adolescents as a marginalized population, and how school counselors can utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy in working with obese adolescents.

(2016) Ethical Decision-Making In Relation To Confidentiality Of Client-Assisted Suicide, Ashley Lopez, Kellie Giorgio Camelford
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
Counselors encounter ethical dilemmas throughout the course of their careers. As new issues arise that change legislation, the counseling profession must translate these ethical concerns into new practices. The authors in this paper apply the ethical decision-making model created by Corey, Corey, and Callanan (2010) to an ethical dilemma with regards to confidentiality of a client-assisted suicide. A growing number of states are considering reform legislation to allow end-of-life assistance (Downie, 2016). In this scenario, a client seeking grief counseling discloses to his counselor his intent to assist his terminally ill wife in her suicide request. Utilizing Corey, Corey, and …

As the use of psychotropic medications to treat mental illness increases across the lifespan, the need for psychopharmacology training for counselors intensifies. Research by Sepulveda (2011) concluded that counselor educators are not overwhelmingly supportive of including a psychopharmacology course in CACREP–approved school counselor curricula. Expanding on Sepulveda’s (2011) work, our findings indicate that most CACREP-approved counseling programs do not offer psychological or psychopharmacology courses. Most program directors favor such courses in their programs, and agree that licensed counselors are routinely confronted with medication issues in professional settings. But despite the fact that most programs lack training in psychopharmacology, directors believe …

The first interview was conducted to gather raw data, and the second interview was conducted to validate the data. Eight first order themes were established in the first interview which consisted of a) injuries (physical and psychological), b) weight, c) pain management, d) …

This paper will provide a summary of the available literature on supervisor training; specifically supervisor training models, programs, and curricula. The authors will also discuss the Multicultural Triadic Network (MTN) model, drawing attention to the added layer of complexity that the supervision-of-supervision (SOS) element contributes. A case scenario will be provided to illustrate how the SOS network flows within the supervisory relationship. Finally, the authors will present specific implications of considering the cultural dynamics of each member of the SOS network in the MTN model.
