[Review Of] C. Peter Ripley, Ed. The Black Abolitionist Papers, Vol. 1: The British Isles, 1830-1865, Orville W. Taylor Jan 1988

[Review Of] C. Peter Ripley, Ed. The Black Abolitionist Papers, Vol. 1: The British Isles, 1830-1865, Orville W. Taylor

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

From 1830 until 1865, hundreds of American, Canadian, and West Indian blacks went to the British Isles and became active in the antislavery movement, which in 1833 reached a peak there with abolition of slavery in the Empire but was only beginning to gain momentum in the United States. They represented the full spectrum of free or fugitive Western Hemisphere blacks: some were well-known antislavery speakers and writers such as Frederick Douglass and Martin Delany; others were originally unknowns such as John Andrew Jackson, who spoke in "the peculiar broken dialect of the negro," and John Brown, whose language was …

[Review Of] Werner Sollors. Beyond Ethnicity: Consent And Descent In American Culture, Barbara Hiura Jan 1988

[Review Of] Werner Sollors. Beyond Ethnicity: Consent And Descent In American Culture, Barbara Hiura

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Sollors writes a provocative assessment of ethnic literature within American culture. He substantiates the premise that ethnic literature is American literature and is historically and ideologically grounded in the established American immigrant pattern. Sollors develops a theoretical base for understanding immigrant/ethnic literature from its Puritan beginnings to the multiethnic reflection of American contemporary society. Rather than being outside the American tradition, immigrant writings are "not only expressions of mediation between cultures but also [act] as handbooks of socialization into the codes of Americanness." He says that immigrant writers express their dualistic role as inheriting characteristics from their ancestors (descent) and …

[Review Of] William H. Turner And Edward J. Cabell, Eds. Blacks In Appalachia, David M. Johnson Jan 1988

[Review Of] William H. Turner And Edward J. Cabell, Eds. Blacks In Appalachia, David M. Johnson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The editors are a civil rights worker (Cabell) and an academician (Turner) who evidence a longstanding interest in the Appalachian region and especially in the place and history of black people there. The articles are grouped into eight parts: Basic Approaches, Historical Perspectives, Community Studies, Race Relations, Black Coal Miners, Blacks and Local Politics, Personal Anecdotal Accounts of Black Life, and Selected Demographic Aspects. According to Turner's article on the demography of Black Appalachia, he defines Appalachia as the Appalachian Regional Commission counties in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

[Review Of] Sarah Blacher Cohen, Ed. From Hester Street To Hollywood: The Jewish-American Stage And Screen, Louise Mayo Jan 1988

[Review Of] Sarah Blacher Cohen, Ed. From Hester Street To Hollywood: The Jewish-American Stage And Screen, Louise Mayo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The considerable Jewish American presence on the stage and screen (and now television), has long been marveled at and discussed. Jewish "dominance" in mass media has been a source of pride to Jews and anguish to anti-semites. Nevertheless, it has only been since the 1960s that numbers have been translated into content. From Hester Street to Hollywood attempts to analyze the Jewish presence and experience in areas as varied as serious drama and stand-up comedy.

[Review Of] Pontheolla T. Williams. Robert Hayden: A Critical Analysis Of His Poetry, James L. Gray Jan 1988

[Review Of] Pontheolla T. Williams. Robert Hayden: A Critical Analysis Of His Poetry, James L. Gray

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Pontheolla Williams' book is fairly straightforward. Because Hayden's life is not well-known, she provides a thirty-five page biography before examining Hayden's work in chronological order generally giving each volume a separate chapter. She includes a bibliography of Hayden's work and of the secondary material she used, notes, several of the major poems she studies, a chronology of Hayden's life, another of his poetry, and an index. All of these, especially the two chronologies, will help the person wanting to study Hayden.

[Review Of] T. Obinkaram Echewa. The Crippled Dancer, David K. Bruner Jan 1988

[Review Of] T. Obinkaram Echewa. The Crippled Dancer, David K. Bruner

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

At the end of The Crippled Dancer, Ajuzia asks, "Was everyone coincidentally and inadvertently carrying a bag packed by other people?" Like Browning's Andrea del Sarto who says, "So free we seem, so fettered fast we are," Ajuzia appears to accept the limitations fate and/or custom place upon the individual. Both men accept with reluctance, however, for both are free, creative spirits aware of the waste of their own talents.

U.S. Women And Hiv Infection, P. Clay Stephens Jan 1988

U.S. Women And Hiv Infection, P. Clay Stephens

New England Journal of Public Policy

Women are inadequately provided with HIV services and education and are differentially denied access to these. Divisions of race, ethnicity, economic class, and religion, among others, are compounded by sexual discrimination within each of these categories.

Review of current data on women with AIDS reveals that the reporting methods used convey a false impression that women are not at significant risk. Moreover, the persons indirectly affected by AIDS are predominantly women — mothers, sisters, partners, family members, teachers, and human service workers. Thus, AIDS is more of a women's issue than the statistics imply.

Women, as a gender-defined class, face …

Leadership And Nonverbal Behaviors Of Hispanic Females Across School Equity Environments, Helen A. Moore, Natalie K. Porter Jan 1988

Leadership And Nonverbal Behaviors Of Hispanic Females Across School Equity Environments, Helen A. Moore, Natalie K. Porter

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Nonverbal behaviors of Hispanic elementary school students and their peers were examined in a small-group cooperative task with a total of 202 subjects. Thirty-five randomly selected groups were videotaped in ten desegregated schools, each group was gender-homogeneous, with three Hispanic and three Anglo students. Analysis of the videotapes revealed that Hispanic females used less vertical and horizontal space than Anglo females, and were also less likely to verbally interrupt or physically intrude on other group members They had similar rates of handling the group resource cards and were given similar leadership scores by multi-ethnic trained observers. Among males, Hispanics are …

Multiple Jeopardy, Multiple Consciousness: The Context Of A Black Feminist Ideology, Deborah K. King Jan 1988

Multiple Jeopardy, Multiple Consciousness: The Context Of A Black Feminist Ideology, Deborah K. King

Dartmouth Scholarship

Black women have long recognized the special circumstances of our lives in the United States: the commonalities that we share with all women, as well as the bonds that connect us to the men of our race. We have also realized that the interactive oppressions that circumscribe our lives provide a distinctive context for black womanhood. For us, the notion of double jeopardy is not a new one. Near the end of the nineteenth century, Anna Julia Cooper, who was born a slave and later became an educator and earned a Ph.D., often spoke and wrote of the double enslavement …

Effects Of Gender, Ethnicity, And School Equity On Students' Leadership Behaviors In A Group Game, Helen A. Moore Jan 1988

Effects Of Gender, Ethnicity, And School Equity On Students' Leadership Behaviors In A Group Game, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Leadership skills and the perception of leadership by students and classroom teachers are examined in 10 desegregated elementary schools. The 10 schools were first divided into "high-equity" and "low-equity" schools based on the extent to which they met "integrative" educational criteria, such as multicultural curricula, multiethnic staff, minority parent involvement, and other factors. A random sample of 202 Hispanic and Anglo students participated in a cooperative group task in gender-segregated groups composed of 3 students from each ethnic group. Results indicate that trained observers found gender differences in nonverbal and verbal leadership behaviors among students across the schools, including higher …

Predictors Of Job Satisfaction Among Three Racial/Ethnic Groups Of Professional Female Human Service Workers, R. L. Mcneely Dec 1987

Predictors Of Job Satisfaction Among Three Racial/Ethnic Groups Of Professional Female Human Service Workers, R. L. Mcneely

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Three hundred and thirty-six female human service workers were studied to determine whether or not racial/ethnic status was related to job satisfaction among managerial, supervisory and professional employees. Both overall and intrinsic satisfaction were assessed. Two groups were similar in the patterns predictive of their satisfaction but the third group appeared to be influenced by concerns peculiar to those achieving recent professional status.

The Incidence And Magnitude Of Tooth-Size Discrepancies In Caucasians, Blacks And Hispanics, Dana R. Shaltry Jun 1987

The Incidence And Magnitude Of Tooth-Size Discrepancies In Caucasians, Blacks And Hispanics, Dana R. Shaltry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The present investigation utilized the Bolton Analysis to determine the incidence and magnitude of tooth-size discrepancy in a sample of 227 orthodontic patients. Sliding calipers were used to measure the mesiodistal width of the permanent dentition on pretreatment study models of 120 Caucasian, 51 Black, and 56 Hispanic patients. The overall and anterior ratios were analyzed and the frequency and magnitude of excess maxillary and mandibular tooth structure was determined. Each racial group demonstrated a significant incidence of tooth-size discrepancy in the maxillary and mandibular arches of a magnitude (> 0.5mm) which would require some form of correction. In addition, …

The Impact Of Cultural Patterns On Cognition And Intention In Singapore, Chin Tiong Tan, John U. Farley Mar 1987

The Impact Of Cultural Patterns On Cognition And Intention In Singapore, Chin Tiong Tan, John U. Farley

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Ethnicity of models used in advertisements and the advertised product's country of origin are manipulated experimentally to study how attitudes toward advertising and products lead to behavioral intention. A sample of Singaporean students' traditional Eastern values about family and conformity are also examined. Patterns of results for three products are consistent with theoretical predictions of cognitive processes, and attitude-intention links appear stronger than do those in similar tests in the West. Culture has mixed effect.

Older Blacks' Predictions Of Their Social Support Networks, Brenda Crawley Mar 1987

Older Blacks' Predictions Of Their Social Support Networks, Brenda Crawley

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Predicting resources for one's later years is risky and evokes feelings of vulnerability. Findings from a study of older blacks reveal that while race and culture may predispose clients to prefer certain resources, such as spouses and children, others realistically expect kin and friends to care for them. The heterogeneous nature of the black elderly suggests an open posture be maintained in assessing support resources for those who face short- or long- term care needs.

[Review Of] Ngugiwa Thiong'o. Decolonizing The Mind: The Politics Of Language In African Literature, David K. Bruner Jan 1987

[Review Of] Ngugiwa Thiong'o. Decolonizing The Mind: The Politics Of Language In African Literature, David K. Bruner

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

"This book, Decolonising the Mind, is my farewell to English as a vehicle for any of my writings. From now on it is Gikuyu and Kiswahili all the way." This declaration by Ngugi wa Thiong'o is one he has every right to make. Many of us, however, will hear it as a casting-off of the large and appreciative readership he enjoyed from the days when, as James Gugi, he instructed and enriched us with The River Between and other fine works of art. To be sure, one can sympathize with any African's hatred of colonization, can feel with him a …

[Review Of] Bo Scholer, Ed. Coyote Was Here: Essays On Contemporary Native American Literary And Political Mobilization, Gretchen M. Bataille

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Scholars doing research in ethnic literature have long been aware of the political nature of much of that literature. Although many critics find politicizing of literature difficult to deal with in their assessment of the artistic value of the works, it is dishonest to ignore this reality. Schöler has provided thirteen essays by creative writers and critics which define both the nature of the literature and the power of the political views which inform much of the creative output of contemporary American Indian writers. According to Schöler, "politics and aesthetics go hand in hand." Schöler and other European critics have …

[Review Of] Lydio F. Tomasi, Ed. Italian Americans: New Perspectives In Italian Immigration And Ethnicity, Gloria Lothrop Jan 1987

[Review Of] Lydio F. Tomasi, Ed. Italian Americans: New Perspectives In Italian Immigration And Ethnicity, Gloria Lothrop

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

There are those who have heralded the 1980s as "The Decade of the Italian American" as many of the 20 million Americans of Italian descent achieve increasing prominence in politics, business, education and the arts. This new role assumed by Americans of immigrant stock has necessitated revised patterns of investigation addressing the impact of socio-economic mobility, the effects of transmigration and the growing phenomenon of exogenous marriage. For example, of the Italian American women born since 1950, between two-thirds and three-quarters have married outside the ethnic group. Finally, the size and multigenerational sampling provided by the Italian American population invites …
