It has long been recognized that many pesticide products offer a potential hazard, which if unregulated, may result in injury or death. The development of highly toxic pesticides during the last decade has created a need for stricter regulation of pesticide use in the agricultural community. Specifically, the farm worker of today is in need of legislative protection from exposure to deadly chemical agents now being used to control pests and disease in the fields and orchards. Regulating the handling and use of these dangerous pesticides is but one way to protect the farmer, the farm worker, and the environment. …

Synovial fluid from a case of pyarthrosis was cultured for fungi, mycobacteria, aerobes and anaerobes with negative results. A Cell Wall Deficient (CWD) form was isolated in numerous cultures which showed the physico-chemical reactions characteristic of wall deficient M. tuberculosis.

The development of fiberoptic instruments which permit direct visualization of the entire colonic lumen has made possible the safe removal of polyps from any part of the colon. The avoidance of transabdominal colotomy and polypectomy significantly decreases the mortality and morbidity as well as the duration of hospital stay. We wish to present our experience in performing the endoscopic removal of 128 colonic polyps larger than 0.5 cm in size in 103 patients, located from the cecum to the sigmoid colon and beyond the reach of the rigid sigmoidoscope. Of 135 patients with streptococcal (non-group D) endocarditis seen at the Henry Ford Hospital (1957-1973), 133 had isolates which were penicillin- sensitive (inhibited by ≤ 0.2 μg/ml of penicillin C). The remaining two causative organisms were inhibited by 0.8 μg/ml of penicillin G and both of the infected patients received antibiotics just prior to the onset of endocarditis. The first patient received oral penicillin C for rheumatic fever prophylaxis and the second high dose parenteral carbenicillin. Using high dose parenteral therapy with ampicillin and streptomycin, the first patient was cured while the other patient relapsed. The second patient responded to …

Effects have been studied of induction of aminonucleoside-nephrosis in the rat on kidney cortex lysosomal acid proteinase activity (pH 3.2) and on such activity in the cytosol from which the lysosomes were isolated. In parallel with the onset of the massive proteinuria of the disease process but not preceding this effect, activity in the cytosol fraction was significantly increased. Significantly increased activity in the lysosomal fraction, on the other hand, was not observed until the proteinuria was well-established. The physical principles for determining tissue lipid content In vivo by selective radiation attenuation have been studied and are compared to other methods of body composition analysis. Two penetrating photon beams, each monoenergetic but of differing energies, are simultaneously passed through the low Z components of tissue and the relative beam absorption measured. A mathematical function incorporating the unabsorbed and absorbed photon beam intensities is applied to determine experimentally the relative proportion of fat and lean in the tissue. The study was designed to determine the hour when temperature peaks occur in adult hospitalized females, and to find if factors such as age and natural or surgical menopause with replacement therapy affect the thermal circadian cycle. Previous studies indicated that the temperature peak occurs in afternoon or early evening, but there were no investigations to determine if aging, sex, or menopause affects the temperature cycle.

The sample included 62 female patients, 29 between 21 and 62 years of age, and 33 between 65 and 90 years. Each subject admitted to the study was screened against fifteen qualifying criteria. Some …

In the annals of job health and safety, 1974 was a signal year. It produced an epidemic of occupational liver cancer associated with vinyl chloride disclosure of a plan to soft-pedal federal regulation of industrial hazards in return for contributions to the 1972 Nixon reelection campaign, and the publication of a brace of exposes decrying the human toll taken by workplace perils. These events furnish hard evidence that the bright hopes raised by passage of the landmark Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 remain far from fulfillment.

The authors' experience with the rare entity of sclerosing cholangitis suggests that several anatomical patterns of involvement of the extrahepatic biliary tract may occur. The involvement may include the intraluminal ducts segmentally or diffusely, or the process may primarily be external to the ducts as pericholedochitis. It may or may not represent one component of a systemic disease, particulady autoimmune disease. Although involvement may be diffuse, progression may be slow and compatible with many years of life. Pseudomonas-caused sternoclavicular arthritis and osteomyelitis has received little attention in the medical literature. The authors present three cases including one case of bilateral sternoclavicular joint involvement. Prompt recognition, operative debridement, and institution of adequate chemotherapy result in dramatic clinical response.

A case of a left atrial myxoma presented unusual features including (1) association with an atrial septal defect, (2) attachment of the myxoma to the posterior wall of the left atrium, (3) probable paradoxical pulmonary embolization from the left atrium, and (4) probable ball valve effect of the myxoma in the atrial septal defect.

A review oi the literature on the hyperventilation syndrome reveals a variety of treatment approaches and a virtual absence of controlled studies of this common problem. Attempts to treat the condition by changing the respiratory pattern through mechanical means can be traced back to the first century A.D. The "paper bag method" of treatment has many psychological drawbacks and is often unsuccessful. Several avenues of drug treatment have been explored: acidifiers, minor tranquilizers, antidepressants, and stimulants. Reports of success with insight-oriented intensive psychotherapy are scarce. Villous adenoma of the appendix was found in an inflammatory mass in the ileocecal area. The patient presented with signs of acute abdomen. On an emergency basis, with an unprepared bowel, exteriorization of the ileocecal area was thought to be the procedure of choice.

Health organizations have been oriented to meeting needs and fulfilling demands which are perceived and defined by physician providers (Freidson, 1970 Stevens, 1971). Organizational goals, services, structures, and processes of operation were formulated in accordance with the interests, values, and concerns of provider-members. A series of 837 cystic duct cholangiograms has been reviewed. The technique is simple and safe to carry out. It is not time consuming and does not require any unusual equipment. It has reduced the incidence of common duct exploration and has decreased the incidence of retained common duct stones. It is stressed that, unless the operative cholangiogram fulfills the criteria of a normal cholangiogram, especially in relation to size and tapering of the tower end of the duct, then common duct exploration should be earned out. Division of the sphincter of Oddi has a definite place i n the surgical treatment of disorders of the biliary tract and pancreas. Sphincterotomy may be indicated as a matter of necessity; for convenience (utility), and as a prophylactic measure (for security). The papilla may be conveniently exposed by antegrade bougienage with filiform passed through the common duct before duodenotomy. Surgical Implications Of Intestinal Amebiasis, Eduardo Camacho

Three thousand two hundred fifty cases of intestinal amebiasis (25%), out of 13,000 consecutive cases, were studied. It was found that 2,275 (70%) had clinical manifestations of the disease, and 975 (30%) were carriers. From the 2,275 with abdominal signs, 1,250 cases (51%) resembled the clinical picture of the chronic irritable colon syndrome. Antiamebic therapy was effective in all of these cases. On the other hand, 1,255 (49%) had acute and severe manifestations of amebic-ulcerative proctocolitis with serious complications, including amebic granulomata (40 cases or 3.2%) and ulcer perforation (14 cases or 1.2%). Because amebic ulcerative proctocolitis is dangerous, the …
