Étude Des Émissions Fugitives Du Procédé De Fabrication Thermomécanique De Pâte De Papier, Nicole Goyer

Une étude a été entreprise afin d'identifier les composés émis lors de la fabrication thermomécanique de la pâte de papier, d'évaluer l'importance relative de ces polluants et de localiser leurs sources d'émission. Des travailleurs avaient rapporté des problèmes d'irritation aux yeux et aux voies respiratoires qu'ils associaient à la présence de fumée émise par ce procédé. Les différentes techniques d'échantillonnage et d'analyse utilisées au cours de cette étude ont été considérées quant à leur utilité comme outils de mesure et de suivi. Certains moyens de contrôle ont également été regardés.

Les valeurs limites tolérables d'exposition à des contaminants présents dans l'air (TLV) ont été établies pour des périodes travail d'une durée de 8 heures par jour et ce, pour des semaines comptant 5 journées consécutives de travail. Compte tenu de popularité croissante des horaires de travail non conventionnels, particulier de ceux résultant en un prolongement de la durée d'exposition à des contaminants, il est important de développer des stratégies visant à adapter les valeurs limites tolérables à cette nouvelle réalité.

Depuis octobre 1990, une équipe conjointe de recherche GIROSST - IRSST effectue une étude dans un abattoir de volailles du Québec; elle fait suite à une demande formulée par la direction régionale concernée, de la Commission de la Santé et Sécurité au Travail (CSST) qui avait constaté une augmentation significative des lésions professionnelles secondaires aux mouvements répétitifs dans le secteur des abattoirs. Cet organisme considère important de mieux comprendre la problématique des mouvements répétitifs et ce, afin d'en améliorer la prévention. Au Québec, l'industrie forestière est un secteur économique important. En 1989 le nombre d'emplois directs se situaient à 14 500 pour les activités de récolte du bois en forêt et de sylviculture, ce qui correspond à 5% de la main-d'oeuvre québécoise. A ces emplois s'en ajoutent 43 400 pour les usines de pâte et papier, 34 300 pour l'industrie du bois (scieries, contreplaqué, etc.). Pour l'exploitation forestière, 4 700 emplois existants concernent des opérateurs de débusqueuse, d'abatteuse et d'ébrancheuse, qui sont les travailleurs touchés par cette étude.

Chez les fondeurs, différentes pathologies du système respiratoire peuvent se manifester tels que des silicoses ou autres fibroses aux poussières mixtes (1-4), des obstructions bronchiques (6,7) et possiblement des cancers du poumon (8-12). Les connaissances (13-26) sur la composition chimique et morphologique des poussières inorganiques et des fumées métalliques sont peu développées. La première étape de gestion du risque à la santé des fondeurs provenant de l'inhalation des poussières et fumées métalliques se situe au niveau de l'identification physicochimique de ces contaminants.

Dans le contexte de la réglementation québécoise actuelle, qui s'appuie sur une norme instrumentale datant de plus de 20 ans, la mesure des bruits industriels impulsionnels peut être entachée d'erreurs systématiques causées par le type d'instrumentation utilisé pour l'échantillonnage.

Compte tenu des progrès considérables survenus durant la dernière décennie dans développement et dans la normalisation des caractéristiques des instruments de mesure du bruit, de telles erreurs ne sont plus admissibles.

La surveillance biologique de l'exposition représente une étape importante de l'exercice d'appréciation du risque toxique, et à ce titre elle permet de prendre des décisions ayant pour objet la prévention des effets nocifs reliés à l'exposition à des contaminants chimiques. De la qualité des données recueillies à l'occasion de la surveillance biologique de l'exposition dépendront donc la pertinence et la nature des décisions ayant pour objet la prévention de la toxicité.

Le projet origine d'une demande adressée à l'IRSST par l'Association paritaire pour la santé et la sécurité du travail - Secteur fabrication de produits en métal et produits électriques. La demande faisait suite à une enquête de perception effectuée par l'ASP auprès du secteur électrique. Cette enquête a montré que dans le secteur électrique, l'une des préoccupations majeures en santé-sécurité était les atteintes musculo-squelettiques reliées au travail répétitif.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Environmental Issues Instruction (eii) program. The study utilized the pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test survey design with a retrospective pre-test. Statistical analysis of four issue topics revealed 198 participants attained two-tailed probability levels less than the .01 level of significance. Analysis of teacher grade levels revealed kindergarten through eighth grade teachers attained two-tailed probability levels less than the .01 level of significance. Ninth through twelfth grade teachers also attained two-tailed probability levels less than the .01 level of significance with one exception. The researcher concludes that the Environmental Issues …

As part of the quality assurance process for Edith Cowan University, a multi-campus institution, an evaluation was undertaken to monitor the effectiveness of the University health service and its significance within the University community. This project was designed to determine if significant differences existed between the level of psychological differentiation, as determined by the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), of individuals entering a treatment center for chemical dependency and the length of stay at the facility.

The subjects consisted of 43 white males who were seeking treatment for addiction to mood altering chemicals at a regional treatment facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Each subject was interviewed to collect pertinent background information pertaining to past substance abuse and was evaluated to determine psychological differentiation, utilizing the GEFT.

Field tests of upper body muscular strength and endurance (UBMSE) are often administered to children, but little is known about the determinants of performance on these tests. Therefore the purpose of this investigation was to examine potential determinants of performance on several common field tests of UBMSE including pull-ups, flexed-arm hang, push-ups, and two types of modified pull-ups. Subjects were 56 girls, and 38 boys, ages 9 to 11 years. Potential determinants assessed were age, height, weight, gender, % fat, physical activity, and laboratory measures of muscular strength and endurance. Purpose The "Evaluation of the IHS Urban Health Business Office Concept," commonly called the Supplementary Security Income (SSI) Project, was a ten month grant demonstration project that was contracted to the American Indian Health Care Association (AIHCA) by the Indian Health Service (IHS) with cooperation of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA was mandated to increase minority and target population enrollment for SSA benefits. The SSA provided funding to the IHS to oversee a project designed to locate and assist urban American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) in applying for SSI.

The search for the gene that causes the multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) syndrome is entering a new phase. Genetic linkage studies have localized the gene to the pericentromeric region of chromosome 10. The statistical portion of mapping the gene for MEN 2A is nearly complete and now classical molecular biological/gene mapping techniques will be employed. We have used fluorescence in situ hybridization to estimate the size of the MEN2A region to be about 2 to 5 mb, using some liberal assumptions; at worst the region should contain no more than about 10 mb of non-alphoid DNA. In persistent, clinically inapparent medullary thyroid carcinoma, microsurgical dissection of all lymph node compartments of the neck was performed. Between August 1988 and September 1991, 28 cases (mean age 43.3 years) were treated with 38 surgical interventions. Twenty patients had the sporadic form and eight patients the familial form. Unilateral neck dissection resulted in normalization of serum calcitonin (CT) levels even after pentagastrin stimulation in two patients whereas 16 patients exhibited abnormal CT stimulation tests. Eight of ten patients who had bilateral neck dissections had positive pentagastrin test results after surgery. The main postoperative complications included loss of local cutaneous …

Three patients of a French family demonstrated an association of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) with a pruritic scapular skin lesion. The lesions are similar to those described as familial cutaneous lichen amyloidosis in unrelated MEN 2A and medullary thyroid carcinoma families, but histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of skin biopsies from each patient in the French family did not show amyloid deposition. The topography of the lesion follows dermatomes C8-D3. The patients report not only pruritus but also paresthesia and hyperalgesia, and one showed touch hypoesthesia and pain hyperesthesia in the area of the lesion. Such an …

Nineteen patients were surgically treated for hyperparathyroidism associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome. Fourteen patients (74%) had removal of three or more parathyroid glands at the first operation, and five (26%) by removal of 2 1/2 or fewer glands. Two patients had recurrent hypercalcemia during the mean follow-up period of 65 months. One had a recurrence 10 years after subtotal parathyroidectomy. Reexploration in this patient revealed enlargement of the remaining tissue in the neck and an enlarged supernumerary gland in the aorticopulmonary window. Linkage analysis has been performed in four pedigrees with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) or familial medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) using pericentromeric chromosome 10 probes. Important information regarding carrier status has been provided in 10 individuals, many of whom would not have been identified by pentagastrin stimulation testing. We have also used pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to link the probes H4JRBP and pMCK2 to a 150 kb fragment. Using PFGE, no evidence was found in DNA from lymphocytes of a major DNA rearrangement in two individuals affected with MEN 2A and an individual with MEN 2B compared …
