Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves May 1971

Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was to provide an approach to help teen-age unwed mothers increase their feelings of self-esteem and thereby attain a conceptual buffer for better coping with life. Self-esteem was defined as individual perception of the worth of oneself relative to that of significant others. The hypothesis tested was that the participating relationship a community health nurse has with a teen-age unwed mother will significantly increase the mother's self-esteem as measured by statistical Q-Sort analysis.

A convenience sample of twenty teen-age unwed mothers was obtained from referrals from San Bernardino County Health, Welfare, and Probation Departments. The girls were between …

Depression And Uncooperativeness In Public Health Patients, P. Sherrill Baugher, Nancy Lynn Swan Jan 1971

Depression And Uncooperativeness In Public Health Patients, P. Sherrill Baugher, Nancy Lynn Swan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether uncooperative behavior and a quantitative measurement of depression exist in the same patient in a public health nurse's caseload. Seven full-time public health nurses were randomly selected from the San Bernardino Public Health Department staff. They reviewed their caseloads and selected all the patients who met the general criteria.

Patients were then classified as cooperative or uncooperative based on the following specific criteria: (1) gives unreliable information, (2) uses the nurse as a "buffer" between helping agencies, (3) demands immediate gratification of requests in a stressful situation, (4) makes only token …

Immunologic Competence In Idiopathic Ulcerative Colitis (Humoral Aspects Of Immunity), Gerald A. Logrippo, Klaus Anselm, Hajime Hayashi, Robert J. Priest Dec 1970

Immunologic Competence In Idiopathic Ulcerative Colitis (Humoral Aspects Of Immunity), Gerald A. Logrippo, Klaus Anselm, Hajime Hayashi, Robert J. Priest

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Systemic immune status was studied in 86 idiopathic ulcerative colitis patients. Quantitation of the major serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA and IgM) and qualitation for specific enteropathogens (bacterial and viral) associated with the immunoglobulins are correlated with the severity and duration of the disease. The studies demonstrate the immunologic competence of these patients to respond to a variety of infections with normal activity and hyperactivity. In addition, systemic complications associated with ulcerative colitis, particularly liver involvement, are reflected in the immunologic studies.

Surreptitious Ingestion Of Oral Anticoagulants, Thomas H. Greidanus, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Raymond W. Monto Jun 1970

Surreptitious Ingestion Of Oral Anticoagulants, Thomas H. Greidanus, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Raymond W. Monto

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Hypoprothrombinemia secondary to surreptitious ingestion of coumarin or indanedione anticoagulants may be a difficult diagnosis for the unsuspecting physician. Four such case reports are presented. The disease should be suspected if the prothrombin time is markedly elevated and the individual is associated with the medical profession or has had previous treatment with oral anticoagulants. The diagnosis is confirmed by finding a deficiency in Factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX, and X and the presence of the coumarin or indanedione anticoagulant in the blood. The motive generally is that of gaining attention rather than committing suicide. Liver disease. Vitamin K deficiency states …

  3. There is a difference in the level of I.Q. of patients and the following of Clinic recommendations.

A random sample of 100 cases was selected from the patients who had been through the Clinic prior …

Sensory Stimulation To Produce Micturition In The Cerebral Vascular Accident Patient, Mary Alice Pearce May 1970

Sensory Stimulation To Produce Micturition In The Cerebral Vascular Accident Patient, Mary Alice Pearce

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An experimental study was conducted in a university and a convalescent hospital using eight female CVA patients with urinary incontinence to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of icing and brushing LI dermatome skin area would increase the probability that the CVA patient would void within a prescribed time and place. A modified one group method was used in which the patient served as her own control by participating in two types of bladder training programs over an eight to twelve hour period for four consecutive days. Program A used the experimental technique; Program B omitted the experimental technique. …

Promethazine-Chlorpromazine Combination In The Treatment Of Unmanageable Psychotic Patients, Armando R. Favazza Dec 1969

Promethazine-Chlorpromazine Combination In The Treatment Of Unmanageable Psychotic Patients, Armando R. Favazza

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Administering a combination of promethazine and chlorpromazine to patients with a "galloping psychosis" has an antipsychotic and tranquilizing effect which calms them down to a more manageable and less aggressive state. The drugs are chemically similar; promethazine's actions are strongly potentiated in the combination, so large doses must be given under careful supervision. Case histories demonstrate successful short term management of acutely psychotic, aggressive patients who were a danger to themselves and others.

Art In Psychotherapy, Robert R. Schopbach Sep 1967

Art In Psychotherapy, Robert R. Schopbach

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Art is a tool too often neglected in psychotherapy. A careful study of a patient's drawings will provide information concerning diagnosis, dynamics, and progress. If, in addition, the patient explains and elaborates upon the content and symbolism, the drawings become excellent psychotherapeutic devices providing an entry into the patient's unconscious.

Altered Body Image Following Radical Mastectomy, Julia Lee Anne Mcconnell Jun 1965

Altered Body Image Following Radical Mastectomy, Julia Lee Anne Mcconnell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify reactions and adjustments to the altered body image following radical mastectomy. It was felt that nurses could be of more assistance to women facing this experience if they knew and understood the common reactions which occur.

Other studies have indicated that major areas of adjustment focus upon dress and appearance. Sexual and social relationships, and curiosity of others. The disruption of a body image makes necessary certain adjustments in the individual's perceptions of himself.

The method of research in this study was descriptive survey with the use of partially structured interviews. Thirty-five …
