Moving Toward Integration: A Study Of Theory And Practice In Feminist Therapy, Susan Amelia Thomas Jul 1975

Moving Toward Integration: A Study Of Theory And Practice In Feminist Therapy, Susan Amelia Thomas

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes a study designed to explore the emerging field of feminist therapy. The goal was not to test the validity of feminist therapy, to probe the assumptions on which it is based, or to compare it to other forms of therapy but to characterize the theory and practice of feminist therapy as it now exists. Feminist therapy was seen as growing out of the cultural and historical context of the feminist movement, which includes a critique of society with emphasis on the particular psychological consequences for women, and a critique of psychotherapy, particularly Freudian psychotherapy, as oppressive to …

Utilization Of Mental Health Services For Children Relative To Social Class. A Pilot Study, H. K. Von Brauchitsch Jun 1975

Utilization Of Mental Health Services For Children Relative To Social Class. A Pilot Study, H. K. Von Brauchitsch

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Two groups of children were selected from those evaluated and treated over a two-year period. The study attempted to contrast the mental health care needs and the health care delivery system of children from the uppermost classes against those of the lowest classes. Very few diagnostic discriminators were found. Prevalence of intellectual dysfunctions In the lower classes and neuroses in the upper classes did not correlate with behavior pattern of "acting out" or "acting in." Autistic psychoses were found almost exclusively among the upper classes; suicidality almost exclusively In the lower classes. Upper class children were more frequently referred by …

A Descriptive Study Of Women's Attitudes Towards Obtaining Or Not Obtaining Papanicolaou Smears, Linda J. Shults Jun 1975

A Descriptive Study Of Women's Attitudes Towards Obtaining Or Not Obtaining Papanicolaou Smears, Linda J. Shults

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this study to identify the attitudes of a selected group of women which influenced their participation in Papanicolaou testing. These attitudes were inferred from the reasons women gave for obtaining the test. The subjects were randomly selected from the telephone book of a medium-sized town in Southern California. The 135 women who participated in the telephone interview were considered to be the respondents in the study.

A review of the literature revealed that through the annual use of the Papanicolaou smear, approximately 11,000 deaths every year from uterine and cervical cancer could be prevented, Attitudes …

Marital Status As A Discriminator And Treatment Variable Among Female Alcoholics, James C. Knapp May 1975

Marital Status As A Discriminator And Treatment Variable Among Female Alcoholics, James C. Knapp

Dissertations and Theses

In this study marital status and the alcoholism or non-alcoholism of the spouse are hypothesized to be important factors affecting the female alcoholic's personality and treatability. Using as a sample group of women seen at a public treatment center for alcoholism, personality measurement variables were obtained from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule. On the basis of these variables and of the additional variable of age, discrimination among this group of women was attempted using a stepwise discriminant analysis.

Classification of this group of women by marital status into four groups (1. alcoholic women with …

Informed Consent And Medical Experimentation, George H. Martin Jr. Apr 1975

Informed Consent And Medical Experimentation, George H. Martin Jr.

IUSTITIA

Certain biomedical technologies already or almost already with us "threaten to reduce the meaning of man and to degrade the human spirit in the very process of becoming technologically feasible, long before the final stage of deployment and widespread use has been reached." It is this threat that has prompted me to consider certain medical and legal problems associated broadly with the human experimentation process. I shall be examining the concept of "informed consent" to both experimental medical therapy and nontherapeutic scientific experimentation as a means of protecting man from the potential ravages of a zealous application of scientific advances …

Treatment Of The Hyperventilation Syndrome, Hans Von Brauchitsch Dec 1974

Treatment Of The Hyperventilation Syndrome, Hans Von Brauchitsch

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A review oi the literature on the hyperventilation syndrome reveals a variety of treatment approaches and a virtual absence of controlled studies of this common problem. Attempts to treat the condition by changing the respiratory pattern through mechanical means can be traced back to the first century A.D. The "paper bag method" of treatment has many psychological drawbacks and is often unsuccessful. Several avenues of drug treatment have been explored: acidifiers, minor tranquilizers, antidepressants, and stimulants. Reports of success with insight-oriented intensive psychotherapy are scarce. Some forms of group psychotherapy have been tried with success. The model of the "medical …

Methadone And Its Rationale In The Treatment Of Narcotic Dependency, Walter J. Cassidy Dec 1974

Methadone And Its Rationale In The Treatment Of Narcotic Dependency, Walter J. Cassidy

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

An effective methadone maintenance program must do more than dispense measured doses in a well-organized clinic. It should attempt to effect changes in the patient's personality and coping mechanisms, social situation, and other conditioning factors which maintain his involvement in narcotics.

Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn Sep 1974

Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive-comparative survey using content analysis of medical records has been done to determine the frequency with which emotional disorders are identified by medical personnel in the population hospitalized in small general hospitals in north-central Nebraska.

A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.

Each medical record that was reviewed has been placed in a category based on whether an emotional disorder was identified in it by the medical personnel, or whether it contained recorded behaviors that could indicate …

How Psychotherapy Heals, Jerome D. Frank Jun 1974

How Psychotherapy Heals, Jerome D. Frank

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This paper, accompanied by the discussions and the preceding introduction, was delivered May 9, 1974 as part of an anniversary celebration commemorating a half century of existence for the psychiatric unit at Henry Ford Hospital. Established in 1924 by the late Thomas J. Heldt, M.D., as a division of neuropsychiatry in the department of medicine, the unit is generally believed to be the first to be incorporated into a general hospital anywhere. It was - and is - conducted without physical restraints of any kind, without isolation of patients, and without segregation of men and women.

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Diet Of Pregnant Teenagers, Dorothy Whiteside Jun 1974

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Diet Of Pregnant Teenagers, Dorothy Whiteside

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

For optimal growth and development during the teens, there needs to be sufficient intake of food to meet the nutritional requirements. Pregnancy during that time increases the nutritional needs. Studies have shown that teenage girls generally have poor eating habits, not meeting the nutritional requirements.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether special nutrition education classes would improve eating habits of a group of pregnant teenagers. Case studies were used as the method to report the findings. A health education class in a special day program for pregnant girls was used as the setting for this study. The …

Near Basal Blood Pressure: A Method Applicable To Clinical Practice, John R. Caldwell Dec 1973

Near Basal Blood Pressure: A Method Applicable To Clinical Practice, John R. Caldwell

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A method is described for determining near basal blood pressure (NBBP) measurements that is applicable to outpatient clinic or office use in daily practice. In our clinic, patients' mean casual pressure was significantly higher than the NBBP, the difference being 40 mm Hg systolic (p < .001) and 18 mm Hg diastolic (p < .001). In hospitalized patients the casual blood pressure was higher than the fourth to sixth day hospital average, and the hospital average was higher than NBBP. The difference between the last two was 15 mm Hg systolic (p <. 005) and 9 mm Hg diastolic (p < .005). In patients recording blood pressure readings at home the average weekly home-recorded blood pressure was not significantly different from NBBP during the same week, -1 mm Hg systolic (p > .80) and 4 mm Hg diastolic (p > .10). NBBP by this method offers a practical way to estimate the average daily blood pressure.

The Effects Of Dental Hygiene Information And Consequation On Plaque Control, Janel R. Warner Dec 1973

The Effects Of Dental Hygiene Information And Consequation On Plaque Control, Janel R. Warner

Masters Theses

The research described in the present paper is based upon a parsimonious analysis of behavior which utilizes principles that have been empirically determined. These principles as discussed by Ullmann and Krasner (1966) and Ulrich, Stachnik, and Mabry (1966) have suggested the wide applicability of behavior modification techniques, not only with animals, but with human subjects in diverse settings. One setting that has previously been left unexplored by proponents of behavior modification, which promises to be an area of growing concern, is that of dental hygiene.

The problem that the present study concerns itself with is educating children in the· correct …

Statistics For Clinical Research, W. R. Mccrum Sep 1973

Statistics For Clinical Research, W. R. Mccrum

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The purpose of this paper is to make understandable the use of statistics in the field of medicine, and to introduce to the clinician some new methods of statistics for drawing some reasonable conclusions based on the meager data usually available. There is, after all, only one valid use of statistics: to enable oneself to make a personal decision based on the information available.

Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. I, No. 1, Wku Honors Program

WKU Administration Documents

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

Health Counseling For The Overweigh Adolescent Girl, Elizabeth J. Handley Jan 1972

Health Counseling For The Overweigh Adolescent Girl, Elizabeth J. Handley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study was undertaken for the purpose of seeing how a health counseling program for overweight adolescent girls could be developed in a secondary high school setting. Initially, the study developed out of an awareness and concern for the problem of obesity among teenage girls, especially those in a secondary school. To provide a strong background for the use in both planning and executing a health counseling program, the study reviewed the health literature dealing especially with several topics:

a. The prevalence of obesity.

b. The relationship of obesity to mental and physical health.

c. The influence of food faddisms …

Experimental Modification Of Attitudes Toward Birth Control, Peggy C. Hunter Jan 1972

Experimental Modification Of Attitudes Toward Birth Control, Peggy C. Hunter

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

It is apparent in both lay and professional literature that we are living in an age of social crises. Clearly the shortage of resources and the problems of pollution and poverty would be greatly ameliorated if our birth rate were controlled. Despite this, a survey of psychological literature reveals a paucity of articles on birth control. Psychologists largely have their heads in the sand with regard to research to understand factors associated with childbearing. Meanwhile, the birth rate soars on and it is increasingly obvious that something must be done.
