The Psychological Effects Of Exercise, Judith Rodin, Thomas G. Plante Jan 1989

The Psychological Effects Of Exercise, Judith Rodin, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

Thousands of businesses in the United States have implemented programs to promote physical fitness among their employees (Falkenberg, 1987). The programs range from company-paid memberships at private health and fitness clubs to complete work site fitness facilities. These programs have been developed not only to improve and maintain employee health but also to promote psychological well-being and productivity and to reduce absenteeism, insurance claims, and stress. Recent research focusing on the use of employee fitness programs to improve work-related behaviors suggests that these programs may improve absenteeism, job satisfaction, tenure. and health care costs, especially among female employees (Baun, Bernacki, …

Isolated Cataplexy: A Familial Study, Kristyna M. Hartse, Frank J. Zorick, Jeanne M. Sicklesteel, Thomas Roth

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Four members of a family, a mother, her two sons, and the mother's second cousin, presented with a history of isolated cataplexy without excessive daytime sleepiness or other symptoms typical of narcolepsy. They were polygraphically monitored during one night followed by a day of multiple nap tests. No subject manifested objective daytime sleepiness as measured by short latencies to sleep onset during daytime naps, and no subject exhibited periods of sleep onset rapid eye movement sleep in either the night or nap recordings. The incidence of isolated cataplexy in this family was traced by history through six generations. We conclude …

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan Jul 1988

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

A variety of magazines are directed at American women. Some emphasize fashion, while others cover child rearing, homemaking, or gardening; still others stress career, coping with multiple women's roles, or feminism. Almost without exception, women's health concerns are periodically addressed by these magazines. Because women are the target audience, I have always assumed that these publications have women's best interests at heart. Is this a realistic assumption? I'm not sure. I also do not know what influence women's magazines have on women's health behavior, but I think it is substantial. If this is so, then shouldn't we hold these publications …

Morbidity And Treatment Of Clinically Important Obesity: An Internal Medicine Perspective, J. David Fachnie Jun 1988

Morbidity And Treatment Of Clinically Important Obesity: An Internal Medicine Perspective, J. David Fachnie

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Obesity is defined as an excess storage of energy in the form of fat. The internist generates a differential diagnosis of etiologic factors and examines the patient carefully. Obese persons are counseled on all medical risks of obesity. Choices for treatment vary according lo the severity of the obesity, and alternative dietary treatments include a balanced-deficit diet or a very low calorie diet. Weight loss can be predicted by applying specified equations. With severe obesity, multidisciplinary treatment is needed. Anorexic agents have limited value because of their side effects and because of weight increase after discontinuing therapy. Obesity is not …

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Profiles Of The Morbidly Obese, Philip J. Lanzisera, Allan Dehorn, Carolyn Macdonald, Conni Sroka, J. David Fachnie

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profiles of 132 morbidly obese individuals participating in a protein-sparing modified fast were examined via factor analytic methods yielding five interpretable psychometric factors. The results support the hypothesis that the morbidly obese are a psychologically heterogeneous population which can be subdivided conceptually. However, the findings fail to support the hypothesis that any particular psychopathology is intricately linked to the development of morbid obesity.

The Development And Application Of A Multiple Regression Equation That Predicts The Sum Of Triceps And Subscapular Skinfolds In Children Ages 10-18, Pamela Luna-Raffy Jun 1988

The Development And Application Of A Multiple Regression Equation That Predicts The Sum Of Triceps And Subscapular Skinfolds In Children Ages 10-18, Pamela Luna-Raffy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop a tool to predict the sum of triceps and subscapular skinfolds in children ages 10-18. In addition, school-based weight management programs were reviewed.

Skinfold calipers are often used to assess body fat percentage, particularly in non-clinical settings, test sites recommended by researchers are the triceps and The subscapular skinfolds. Recently, however, educators have reported two concerns about using skinfold calipers in the schools: (1) Specialized training and equipment are required, and (2) individuals must remove their clothing from selected test sites.

For schools where the use of calipers present problems, it seemed …

An Evaluation Of Injury Incidence And Typology In Industry, Shirlee Ann Brooks May 1988

An Evaluation Of Injury Incidence And Typology In Industry, Shirlee Ann Brooks

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

In a retrospective study, 84 subjects treated for industrial injuries at one urgent care center during one calendar year were analyzed. The parameters evaluated were type of industry engaged in, type of injury sustained, and body part affected by the injury. All subjects were categorized within these parameters. Statistical analysis was performed by frequency distribution and Chi Square. Results obtained showed a statistically significant difference in distribution of various types of injuries that affected different body parts. It also revealed a significant difference in the distribution of types of injuries incurred by workers in different types of industry. It failed, …

The Relationship Between Multiple Health Factors, Demographics, And Body Weight, Glenda J. Potter

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test the relationship between regular aerobic exercise and body weight. It was the intent of this study to determine if a person who regularly exercises at either high or moderate levels can maintain their body weight at desired levels as specified by the Body Mass Index (BMI). The participants in this study were selected from hospital employees, class members of aerobic classes and/or adult walkers/joggers. There were 38 participants-- 13 males and 25 females.

A self administered questionnaire and a 3-day, 24-hour dietary log were identified to comprise the instrument as well as …

A Double-Blind Trial Of Protriptyline In The Treatment Of Sleep Apnea Syndrome, Edward J. Stepanski, William A. Conway, David K. Young, Frank J. Zorick, Robert M. Wittig, Thomas Roth Mar 1988

A Double-Blind Trial Of Protriptyline In The Treatment Of Sleep Apnea Syndrome, Edward J. Stepanski, William A. Conway, David K. Young, Frank J. Zorick, Robert M. Wittig, Thomas Roth

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Eight male subjects with sleep apnea syndrome were given placebo and protriptyline in a double-blind crossover design to evaluate the effects of protriptyline on respiration during sleep. Treatment with protriptyline produced significantly better oxygenation and significantly fewer arousals during sleep, but sleep staging was unchanged. The decreased number of respiratory events approached significance and was much greater in six of eight subjects. A rapid eye movement sleep-suppression explanation of the improvement in oxygenation is not supported. Alternative explanations of these findings are discussed.

Sleep-Wake Complaints And Their Relation To Sleep Disturbance, De Ton, Frank J. Zorick, Timothy A. Roehrs, Robert M. Wittig, Jeanne M. Sicklesteel, Thomas Roth

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This report is a comparison of patients presenting with 1) an insomnia complaint diagnosed as no objective findings. 2) insomnia diagnosed as being associated with a psychiatric disorder, and 3) daytime sleepiness diagnosed as no objective findings. The sleep of patients with insomnia diagnosed as no objective findings is comparable to that of patients with daytime sleepiness diagnosed as no objective findings and is significantly better than that of patients with insomnia associated with a psychiatric disorder. Significant differences were found in sleep induction, sleep maintenance, and overall sleep efficiency. No major differences were found among any of the groups …

Clinical Significance Of Sleep Desaturation In Hypoxemic Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Studies In 130 Patients, William A. Conway, Meir Kryger, Richard M. Timms, George W. Williams Mar 1988

Clinical Significance Of Sleep Desaturation In Hypoxemic Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Studies In 130 Patients, William A. Conway, Meir Kryger, Richard M. Timms, George W. Williams

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We studied 130 patients with hypoxemic chronic obstructive lung disease to determine if nocturnal desaturation aggravates hypoxia-induced complications. All had tests of neuropsychological and physiological function known to be affected by chronic hypoxia. Of the 130 patients, 25 had complete polysomnography and 105 had their sleep judged visually and arterial oxygen saturation recorded continuously. Severe and mild desaturation groups were defined relative to the mean for both mean and maximal sleep desaturation, and the severity of waking complications were compared. No significant differences were noted between patients with mild and severe mean desaturation or maximal desaturation for hematocrit, neuropsychological tests, …

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan Jan 1988

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Why is it that so little is known about PMS? First of all, there is no agreement on what PMS is. If investigators are referring to different sets of symptoms, how can studies be comparable? In fact, they are not. Not only are the symptoms different, but the timing of symptoms is different, Some studies describe symptoms that occur 7 to 10 days before the onset of menses, while others include symptoms that begin 14 days before the onset of menses and continue for 7 days after onset. This definition suggests that women may have PMS-related symptoms during 21 days …

Conduct Disorder And Cognitive Functioning: Testing Three Causal Hypotheses, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, David Shaffer, Patricia O'Connor, Stephanie Portnoy Jan 1988

Conduct Disorder And Cognitive Functioning: Testing Three Causal Hypotheses, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, David Shaffer, Patricia O'Connor, Stephanie Portnoy

Publications and Research

Studied the relation between cognitive functioning, as evidenced by IQ and achievement test performance, and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) categories of conduct disturbance, using data from Black adolescents who were members of collaborative perinatal project from birth to age 7 yrs. At age 17 yrs, Ss and their parents were administered a battery of instruments that included standardized psychiatric diagnostic interviews as part of a call-back study. Analyses were compatible with the hypothesis that deficiencies in cognitive functioning are causally related to adolescent conduct disorder as defined by DSM—III. Results suggest that the relation of cognitive …

The Aids Epidemic: A Prism Distorting Social And Legal Principles, Alec Gray Jan 1988

The Aids Epidemic: A Prism Distorting Social And Legal Principles, Alec Gray

New England Journal of Public Policy

The AIDS epidemic is affecting American society in far-reaching and unexpected ways. It touches our institutions, our value systems, and our private lives. Social issues seem to change and become distorted by the epidemic 's prismlike effect. This article examines some of the major public health issues raised by the epidemic, ranging from testing to contact tracing and quarantine. It argues that while the civil rights of individuals may have to be sacrificed to stem the spread of the disease, those rights should not be abandoned unless a clear benefit to the public health would result.

Issues of discrimination in …

Neuropsychiatric Complications Of Hiv Infection: Public Policy Implications, Alexandra Beckett, Theo Manschreck Jan 1988

Neuropsychiatric Complications Of Hiv Infection: Public Policy Implications, Alexandra Beckett, Theo Manschreck

New England Journal of Public Policy

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infects the central nervous system (CNS), causing symptoms in most persons with AIDS-related complex (ARC) and AIDS, and in a significant proportion of those classified as asymptomatic seropositive. The most common clinical syndrome secondary to CNS infection is known as HIV encephalopathy. When sufficiently disabling, HIV encephalopathy is known as AIDS dementia, and must be reported to the Centers for Disease Control as a case of AIDS.

AIDS dementia is a complex of cognitive, affective, behavioral, and motor symptoms which varies widely in its presentation. In some persons, cognitive impairment predominates, manifesting in a loss …
