Programming Maternal And Child Overweight And Obesity In The Context Of Undernutrition: Current Evidence And Key Considerations For Low- And Middle-Income Countries., Lindsay M Jaacks, Justine Kavle, Abigail Perry, Albertha Nyaku
Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications
The goals of the present targeted review on maternal and child overweight and obesity were to: (i) understand the current situation in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) with regard to recent trends and context-specific risk factors; and (ii) building off this, identify entry points for leveraging existing undernutrition programmes to address overweight and obesity in LMIC. Trends reveal that overweight and obesity are a growing problem among women and children in LMIC; as in Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, where the prevalence among urban women is approaching 50 %. Four promising entry points were identified: (i) the …
Reducing Tobacco-Related Health Disparities : Exploring The Barriers And Facilitators To Smoking Cessation Among Individuals Experiencing Homelessness., Bernadette Guzman Antoon
Reducing Tobacco-Related Health Disparities : Exploring The Barriers And Facilitators To Smoking Cessation Among Individuals Experiencing Homelessness., Bernadette Guzman Antoon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the prevalence of smoking has declined in the U.S., vulnerable populations continue to suffer from tobacco-related health disparities. An estimated 68.0-80.0% of homeless adults are current cigarette smokers compared to 15.1% in the general population. The large gap in smoking rates suggests that current tobacco cessation programs designed to reduce smoking have little impact among individuals experiencing homelessness. The purpose of this study was to explore the barriers and facilitators to smoking cessation among the homeless. The second aim of this study was to explore if the barriers and facilitators to tobacco cessation differed among male smokers experiencing homelessness …

Prenatal depression has been associated with adverse outcomes for both pregnant women and infants. Data was studied from Healthy Start (n=1093). Healthy Start participants were screened for depression using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) during pregnancy. Data reported included birthweight, gestational length, ethnicity, and sociodemographic variables. No statistically significant association was found between a positive EPDS screen and birthweight-low/normal (OR 1.02 [95% CI 0.53, 1.70]), birthweight-abnormal (OR 1.02 [95% CI 0.53, 1.70], or gestation-preterm/term (OR 1.29 [95% CI 0.68, 2.45]). An association was observed between a positive screen and race, ethnicity by region of origin, immigrant status, English as …
Sugar Price Supports And Taxation: A Public Health Policy Paradox, Abby Dilk, Dennis Savaiano
Sugar Price Supports And Taxation: A Public Health Policy Paradox, Abby Dilk, Dennis Savaiano
Student Works
Domestic US sugar production has been protected by government policy for the past 82 years, resulting in elevated domestic prices and an estimated annual (2013) $1.4 billion dollar “tax” on consumers. These elevated prices and the simultaneous federal support for domestic corn production have ensured a strong market for high-fructose corn syrup. Americans have dramatically increased their consumption of caloric sweeteners during the same period. Consumption of “empty” calories (ie, foods with low-nutrient/high-caloric density)—sugar and high-fructose corn syrup being the primary sources—is considered by most public health experts to be a key contributing factor to the rise in obesity. There …

Estimating Environmental Emissions From Produce Waste Redistribution In The Capital Region, Molly Fleming
Estimating Environmental Emissions From Produce Waste Redistribution In The Capital Region, Molly Fleming
Public Health Undergraduate Program
Every year in New York’s Capital Region a large amount of food goes to waste, and about one-half of produce (fruits and vegetable) that is produced is wasted. However, many organizations in the Capital Region have put in efforts to redistribute this surplus produce to the food insecure to help improve their diets. This project looked at how that surplus produce is redistributed to the food insecure in the Capital Region, the life cycle energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions of that redistribution, and how that redistribution could be improved. Working with local partners through survey data collection, interviews, …

Hydration Markers And Water Intake In 3 To 13 Year-Old Girls, Cody Shopper
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
INTRODUCTION: Recent data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed that more than 50% of children in the U.S. are hypohydrated. However, this assessment was based on a random single urine void which has several limitations in assessing hydration. Studies have shown that greater water consumption is associated with improved mood, cognition, increased physical activity and better overall nutrition. OBJECTIVE: To assess water intake and hydration status in 3-13 year-old girls. METHODS: 39 girls age 3-13 years-old (6.9 ± 2.9 y) collected their own urine samples for 24-hours on a Sunday. Subjects also recorded …

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Nursing Child Assessment Teaching (Ncat) Scale In Two Samples Of Mothers And Children, Samantha H. Ransone
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The mother-child relationship (MCR) has received an increasing amount of attention over the last several decades regarding its effect on long-term child development. Because the quality and quantity of interactions in the MCR have been established as important predictors of the child’s development, early identification of areas in the relationship requiring support and intervention is essential for promoting positive child outcomes. Observational assessment of the mother and child is considered best practice in evaluating maternal-child interaction (MCI). The Nursing Child Assessment Teaching (NCAT) scale is an instrument that has been used to quantify the quality of interaction in the MCR …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Dietary intake is related to 4 major causes of death and may be influenced by the food environment, which includes the $64.3 billion revenue-producing vending machine industry. Most machines contain low nutrient energy dense foods and beverages associated with poor dietary choices, while healthier vending initiatives are seen as a strategy to increase access to healthy foods. Elementary and secondary schools have increasingly adopted healthier vending standards in response to federal child nutrition regulation and student wellness policy implementation, however an association between vending and diet has not been made using a large sample of nationally representative data. The purpose …

Association Of Genetic Factors With Chronic Kidney Disease In Us Young Adults, Sabra Stanford
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Albumin, a protein that when found in urine, is an early indicator of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Genetic contributions have been shown to illustrate the gene-environment interactions that may lead to CKD in an individual; however, few studies have highlighted the interaction between responses of gene variations associated with the risk of increased albumin in young adults. This study’s purpose is to evaluate the hypothesis that candidate genes are related to microalbuminuria in young adults of the third wave of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health Wave III). This longitudinal study includes an assessment of various candidate …

Did Contracting Effect The Use Of Primary Health Care Units In Pakistan?, Ashar Muhammad Malik, Ellen Van De Poel, Eddy Van Doorslaer
Community Health Sciences
For many years, Pakistan has had a wide network of Basic Health Units spread across the country, but their utilization by the population in rural and peri-urban areas has remained low. As of 2004, in an attempt to improve the utilization and performance of these public primary healthcare facilities, the government has gradually started contracting-in intergovernmental organizations to manage these BHUs. Using five nationally representative household surveys conducted between 2001 and 2012, and exploiting the gradual roll-out of this reform to apply a difference-in-difference approach, we evaluate its impact on BHU utilization. We find that contracting of the BHU management …

In 2013, approximately 6% of 19 to 26-year-old males had received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine (Richman, Maddy, Torres, & Goldberg, 2016). Currently there is no known cure for HPV, however a prophylactic vaccination provides an efficacious method for protection against HPV related diseases. The purpose of the evidence-based project was to provide a HPV educational intervention to collegiate males and examine the effects of HPV knowledge, intention to vaccinate, and receipt of vaccination. The Health Belief Model was selected to …
The Effects Of Continuous Insulin Pump Therapy On Glycemic Control In Pregnant Type 1 Diabetics, Kimberly Kelsey
The Effects Of Continuous Insulin Pump Therapy On Glycemic Control In Pregnant Type 1 Diabetics, Kimberly Kelsey
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus accounts for approximately 5% of the diabetic population (CDC, 2015). Numerous complications must be avoided when a diabetic is insulin dependent. Women who are diabetic who are planning to conceive a family have special considerations. Little research has been focused into how to best manage Type 1 diabetics during pregnancy. Since Type 1 diabetes is predominantly diagnosed between birth and 30 years of age, many Type 1 diabetics have potential to become pregnant without knowing how to best manage their diabetes. Poor glycemic control in diabetics has been related to miscarriages, stillbirths, malformations, and macrosomia (Lapolla, …

Little is known about the patterns of risk factors experienced by communities of color and how diverse community contexts shape the health trajectory of women from the early childhood period to the time of their pregnancies. Thus, we conducted a focus group study to identify social risks over the life course that contribute to maternal and child health from the perspective of community members residing in low income urban areas.
Ten community-based participatory focus groups were conducted with residents from selected communities in Tampa, Florida, from September to November 2013. We used the life course perspective to illuminate and explain …
