Reducing Detroit’S Heart Disease Risk: The Role Of Social Determinants Of Health And Health Behaviors, Caress A. Dean, Rebecca Milan, Maidah Raja, Swathi Radhakrishnan
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Introduction: The age-adjusted death rates related to heart disease have been increasing in Detroit, Michigan. Recognizing public health professionals' role in promoting and protecting community health, this study examined the relationship between cardiovascular health and health beliefs, behavior tracking, and social determinants of health among Detroit residents.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was guided by the World Health Organization's conceptual framework of social determinants of health, which classifies social determinants into structural (e.g., socioeconomic factors) and intermediary (e.g., behavioral factors) categories. From May 2019 to August 2021, 394 residents of Detroit were recruited to complete a survey about their …

Improving Food Security To Decrease Hypertension At An Urban Community Clinic, Christine S. Villalta
Improving Food Security To Decrease Hypertension At An Urban Community Clinic, Christine S. Villalta
Master's Projects and Capstones
Diet and lifestyle changes have been proven to reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension, and a key dietary approach aligned with this recommendation is the DASH diet, which includes consuming fruits and vegetables. Food insecurity, defined as lacking enough safe, nutritious food to maintain an active and healthy life, is a growing crisis in the United States, affecting 13.5% of U.S. households in 2023. This is especially significant for those whose chronic disease management depends on the accessibility of healthy food. An urban community clinic implemented a Food Security Program to decrease food insecurity and reduce hypertension among their …
Infant Mortality Data: Missing Pieces To Prevention In Lesotho, Jacinda Croissant
Infant Mortality Data: Missing Pieces To Prevention In Lesotho, Jacinda Croissant
Master's Projects and Capstones
Lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) like Lesotho lack complete and quality infant mortality data. Without infant mortality data, it can be challenging to develop public health education, programming, and policies to address preventative infant deaths in specific populations (Rao et al., 2004). A literature review identified strategies to improve infant mortality data in LMICs. Through a community engagement model and digital storytelling, community members can gain awareness, begin an ongoing conversation about local public health issues, and participate in an improved data collection system. Infant mortality is often used as an indicator of health for a population; improved infant mortality data can …
The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Allostatic Load On Premature Birth Rates: A Literature Review, Roxane J. Scherek
The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Allostatic Load On Premature Birth Rates: A Literature Review, Roxane J. Scherek
Master's Projects and Capstones
This paper examines the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), allostatic load, and the likelihood of women giving birth prematurely in the United States and Canada. I searched multiple databases exploring this association, identifying nineteen articles published between 2004 and 2024. The literature highlights that racism and discrimination are a cause of chronic stress, and that this stress, and implicit bias, are both implicated in preterm birth. While ACEs scores have been found to be associated with preterm birth, the results for allostatic load are mixed. The results suggest that more attention should be paid to mitigating the stress associated …

We have developed a population-level method for dietary assessment using low-cost wearable cameras. Our approach, EgoDiet, employs an egocentric vision-based pipeline to learn portion sizes, addressing the shortcomings of traditional self-reported dietary methods. To evaluate the functionality of this method, field studies were conducted in London (Study A) and Ghana (Study B) among populations of Ghanaian and Kenyan origin. In Study A, EgoDiet's estimations were contrasted with dietitians' assessments, revealing a performance with a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 31.9% for portion size estimation, compared to 40.1% for estimates made by dietitians. We further evaluated our approach in Study …

Infant formula provides a safe, nutritious alternative to breastfeeding but caregivers may use unsanitary methods or make substantial errors with formula dilution and jeopardize infant health.1 Underdiluting formula can result in health problems, such as hypernatremic dehydration, gastroenteritis, other digestive problems, or long-term excess weight gain.2 Overdiluting infant formula, sometimes used to reduce expense by low-income caregivers,2 can also lead to serious health problems for babies, including diarrhea, water intoxication, nutrient deficiencies, malnutrition, and even death.2,3
Previous studies have assessed common measurement inaccuracy of infant formula preparations in relation to bottle characteristics, package instructions, caregiver experience, and target amount, …

In resource-limited areas, where accurate weight-for-height Z-scores are hard to obtain, Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) is a simple tool to identify wasted children. MUAC alone, however, may miss identification of many wasted children, leading to untimely intervention and potentially death. Our study aimed to identify the best-performing case definition to detect wasting by Weight-for-Height z-scores (WHZ) in Filipino children aged 6-59 months. We analyzed the 2018-2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey to assess the diagnostic performance of MUAC cutoffs and a case definition combining MUAC and weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) in identifying moderate and severe wasting compared to the WHZ criterion. The …

Many studies examine the risk of cardiovascular disease in the general population of African Americans adults compared with other racial and ethnic groups; however, there is limited research that explores the risk factors, discrimination, and food behavior that impact this group. Cardiovascular disease develops over time and certain practices or experiences can increase the risk of this disease; thus, studying the behavior and perceptions of college students is important. Therefore, this research examined whether food behavior and perceived discrimination was higher in African American college students than in other racial or ethnic student groups. Utilizing a survey containing both qualitative …

Addressing The Public Health Concern Of Maternal Mortality In Houston, Texas, Lucy Couture
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Maternal mortality remains a pressing public health concern in the United States, with disproportionate consequences for marginalized communities. Despite being a developed nation, the U.S. reports one of the highest maternal mortality rates among its peers, with approximately 80% of maternal deaths deemed preventable. Texas reflects this national crisis, particularly affecting Black women, whose maternal mortality rate is significantly higher than that of other racial and ethnic groups. This thesis explores maternal mortality trends in Houston, Texas, analyzing the roles of systemic inequities, social determinants of health, and disparities in access to quality care. Drawing on data from the Texas …
