Anthropometric Parameters In Public School Students And Seventh-Day Adventist Vegetarian And Meat-Eating Students, Joan Sabaté-Casellas
Anthropometric Parameters In Public School Students And Seventh-Day Adventist Vegetarian And Meat-Eating Students, Joan Sabaté-Casellas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Concerns have been expressed for the ability of some vegetarian diets to support normal growth of children. Animal protein or meat intake showed a positive relationship to attained height in children from developing countries. In this study, the relationship between meat intake/vegetarian status and physical growth was investigated in children living in California.
Height and weight were collected on 2,272 Caucasian children aged 6-18 years attending Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) or public schools who participated in a two year longitudinal study. Age-, sex-, and school-specific mean heights and weights were at or above the national reference values. Sex-specific, age-adjusted regression analysis …

An Analysis And Evaluation On Printed Materials Used In Genetic Counseling, Janet L. Macarthur
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine printed educational materials on five specific genetic disabilities and evaluate them for appropriateness of reading level and for inclusion of several specific issues related to the adequacy of the literature. Publicly available literature was analyzed using the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Formula and content analysis to estimate readability and to test for the presence of a definition of the disorder, a description of the basic genetics of the disorder and its symptomology, references to support groups and references for further information.
The data indicate that a definition of the disorder was included in 85% …

Effect Of Cyclosporine On The Rate Of Renal Function Recovery After Renal Transplantation, Francis Dumler
Effect Of Cyclosporine On The Rate Of Renal Function Recovery After Renal Transplantation, Francis Dumler
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
To assess the effect of cyclosporine therapy on the rate of renal function recovery after renal transplantation, patients with no clinical evidence of rejection and who were treated with either cyclosporine or azathioprine in addition to steroid therapy were studied (n = 74). Of the patients with immediate renal function (n = 57), those receiving organs from living, related donors had a faster recovery rate of glomerular filtration than patients with cadaveric grafts (azathioprine, 15 ± 2 versus 7 ± 1 mL/min/day, P = 0.0001; cyclosporine, 14 ± 3 versus 6 ± 1 mL/min/day, P = 0.001). Recipients of cadaveric …

What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker
School of Public Health Faculty Research
The impact of various child care arrangements on the health of infants and preschool children is not known in any systematic way, yet by 1990 more than 10 million of these children may be receiving their care in day care facilities (1). Concerns over the health of these children and health practices within day care facilities have already led some States to place regulation of day care facilities under the jurisdiction of the department of health (2,3), and others are presently considering such legislation. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently published "Health in Day Care," a manual …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité gives information about a postnatal family planning program in the Sfax Center of the Tunisia Maternity and Newborns Hospital. This program, developed jointly by the national family planning program and the Maternity staff, has had extraordinary success in getting more mothers to return after six weeks for their postnatal visit. During the visit, the period between births is discussed; and family planning services are offered as an important means for achieving both the recovery and good health of the mother, as well as the physical and mental development of the infant. The report describes a few …

A Dengue Antibody Prevalence Study In New Providence, Bahamas, Veronica Toppin
Public Health Theses
Approximately 275 persons currently residing in New Providence, and whose ages ranged from 1-60 years were chosen to participate in school and pre/post natal clinic surveys testing for dengue antibody. Two hundred nine persons responded favorably. Blood samples taken from these individuals were tested for dengue antibody utilizing the IgM (MAC) Capture ELISA, the IgG ELISA and/or the Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. Twelve percent of the population tested were < 5 years, and the majority of the participants (55%) were between the ages of 5 and 9 Years.
The results showed that 15.4 % of the females, and 5.1 % of the males tested positive for dengue antibody. Three percent of the persons who tested positive to dengue were …

The Pediatrician's Guide To Food Allergy, John A. Anderson
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Food allergy occurs in as many as 5% of infants less than 1 year old. Most food sensitivities disappear by age 3 to 4. Most immunologically mediated food allergy reactions are due to type I IgE mechanisms, with skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory signs and symptoms the most common manifestations. U sing the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) technique and atopic dermatitis as a model, the most common foods to which children are allergic are cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, fish, and soy proteins. Anaphylactic sensitivity in older children often involves crustacean seafoods (eg, shrimp), nuts, peanuts, fish, and eggs. Such …

Lead Poisoning: A Health Epidemic In The Black Community, Wornie L. Reed
Lead Poisoning: A Health Epidemic In The Black Community, Wornie L. Reed
Trotter Review
Lead poisoning in humans has been identified as a cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, birth defects, complications in pregnancies and developmental problems in infants. It is a health problem of epidemic dimensions in the black community. This serious health problem is yet another example of the production of “illth” in the modern society. As the means of production create wealth for some sectors of society they also create illth.
Obesity And Hypertension: A Review, Khaled Imam, James R. Sowers
Obesity And Hypertension: A Review, Khaled Imam, James R. Sowers
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Hypertension is an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Obesity is often associated with hypertension. This strong association can be attributed to several pathophysiological changes which occur in obese subjects: increased salt and caloric intake, increased blood volume, increased cardiac output, increased basal as well as stress-stimulated sympathetic nervous system activity, hyperinsulinemia, and a relative increase in renin and aldosterone. Obesity usually increases the preload and causes an eccentric cardiac hypertrophy, while hypertension increases the afterload and causes concentric cardiac hypertrophy. When both obesity and hypertension occur in the same patient (as is often the case), they present …
Biophysical Methods For Estimating In Vivo Body Composition: The Determination Of The Adipose Compartment, Luther E. Preuss, Frank P. Bolin
Biophysical Methods For Estimating In Vivo Body Composition: The Determination Of The Adipose Compartment, Luther E. Preuss, Frank P. Bolin
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The status of the human body's major components (adipose mass, lean mass, body water, etc) and their change with time are of clinical importance. Deviation of these body components from a stable condition may be imposed by nutrition or disease, and a return to the normal body state may be brought about by appropriate medical care. Thus accurate quantitation of these components is an important goal. This field of study can be traced to the early 1800s, with a major thrust starting in the 1940s and continuing lo the present. The last four decades have shown an accelerated development of …
Morbidity And Treatment Of Clinically Important Obesity: An Internal Medicine Perspective, J. David Fachnie
Morbidity And Treatment Of Clinically Important Obesity: An Internal Medicine Perspective, J. David Fachnie
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Obesity is defined as an excess storage of energy in the form of fat. The internist generates a differential diagnosis of etiologic factors and examines the patient carefully. Obese persons are counseled on all medical risks of obesity. Choices for treatment vary according lo the severity of the obesity, and alternative dietary treatments include a balanced-deficit diet or a very low calorie diet. Weight loss can be predicted by applying specified equations. With severe obesity, multidisciplinary treatment is needed. Anorexic agents have limited value because of their side effects and because of weight increase after discontinuing therapy. Obesity is not …

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Profiles Of The Morbidly Obese, Philip J. Lanzisera, Allan Dehorn, Carolyn Macdonald, Conni Sroka, J. David Fachnie
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profiles of 132 morbidly obese individuals participating in a protein-sparing modified fast were examined via factor analytic methods yielding five interpretable psychometric factors. The results support the hypothesis that the morbidly obese are a psychologically heterogeneous population which can be subdivided conceptually. However, the findings fail to support the hypothesis that any particular psychopathology is intricately linked to the development of morbid obesity.
Blood Pressure Changes And Weight Changes In Hypertensive Patients In An Inner-City Clinic, A. David Goldberg, Frits Van Der Kuyp, Pamela C. Keenen
Blood Pressure Changes And Weight Changes In Hypertensive Patients In An Inner-City Clinic, A. David Goldberg, Frits Van Der Kuyp, Pamela C. Keenen
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The association of obesity and hypertension has been clearly established. Despite evidence that weight loss reduces blood pressure, this aspect of treatment is often not stressed. We studied the effects of nutritional intervention in a group of inner-city, predominantly black, hypertensive patients to determine resultant blood pressure changes. Weight reduction was achieved by 57% of the patients, with a loss of more than 4.5 kg (10 lb) in 18%. Changes in weight were highly correlated with blood pressure changes. Correlations were greater for systolic than diastolic pressures, for pressure measured in the standing than the supine position, and for men …
