Dietary And Parasitological Analysis Of Coprolites Recovered From Mummy 5, Ventana Cave, Arizona, Karl Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly
Dietary And Parasitological Analysis Of Coprolites Recovered From Mummy 5, Ventana Cave, Arizona, Karl Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly
Karl Reinhard Publications
Four coprolites were excavated with Burial 5 at Ventana Cave. a partially mummified five-year-old child. Two coprolites were granular and dark in color and two were fibrous and light in color. The coprolites are remains of the child's intestinal contents and were submitted for dietary and parasitological analysis. No parasites were found. The fibrous coprolites proved to be remains of highly masticated mesquite pods (Prosopis). The granular coprolites consist of seeds of saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Pollen analysis reveals two dietary pollen types, both derived from cactus. No evidence of cultivated plants except for a trace amount of …

The Physiologic Basis For Nutritional Support In Hepatic Failure, John J. Fath
The Physiologic Basis For Nutritional Support In Hepatic Failure, John J. Fath
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Hepatic failure is often perceived as a unidimensional progression from near normal clinical function (Child's class A) to overt clinical failure (Child's class C). As this view fails to distinguish between patients who are capable of using exogenous protein and those who cannot, it hinders the nutritional support team in determining protein supplementation. This report addresses the physiologic basis for variable findings in hepatic failure and proposes a simple definition of hepatic faliure based upon ability to utilize amino acids.
Nutritional Implications Of Liver Transplantation, Jeanette M. Hasse
Nutritional Implications Of Liver Transplantation, Jeanette M. Hasse
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Malnutrition is a common problem of patients undergoing liver transplantation. To treat malnutrition, it must first be identified through a nutritional assessment. Because many objective nutritional assessment parameters have limitations in end-stage liver disease, subjective nutritional indicators may be used as an alternative. Nutritional needs following transplantation are categorized as short and long term. The short-term nutritional goal, anabolism, can be complicated by the nutritional status of the patient, surgical procedures, and necessary medications. The increased nutrient needs during the early posttransplant phase require particular nutritional support. Nutrition-related problems following transplantation may include obesity, hyperlipidemia. hypertension, diabetes mellitus. hyperkalemia, edema, …

The Effects Of Moderate Exercise Training On Nutrient Intake In Mildly Obese Women, Leann Onasch
The Effects Of Moderate Exercise Training On Nutrient Intake In Mildly Obese Women, Leann Onasch
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The relationship between moderate exercise training (five 45 min sessions/week, brisk walking at 62+2% V02max for 15 weeks) and changes in nutrient intake was investigated in a group of 36 sedentary, mildly obese women, conducted using a two (exercise, EX and nonexercise, NEX groups) x three (baseline, six-, 15-week testing sessions) factorial design, with data analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. The pattern of change over time between groups for kilocalorie intake tended to be different between groups [F(2,68)=2.50,p=0.089] with the EX group experiencing a significant decrease versus baseline by 15 weeks. Significant group x time interactions were found for …

Adapting The Health Knowledge Inventory For Use With High School Seniors, Cara Case
Adapting The Health Knowledge Inventory For Use With High School Seniors, Cara Case
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Knowledge alone is not enough to ensure that the individual will act in a healthy manner or choose positive health behaviors. However, knowledge may enable one to engage in sound health practices. Health education must respond to the changes in American culture by developing approaches that achieve maximum communication and learning. The purpose of this thesis is to assess the suitability of the Health Knowledge Inventory – High School Version (HKI-HS) for testing with high school seniors. A field test was performed to assess whether the HKI-HS is an appropriate measurement instrument of personal health knowledge among high school seniors. …

Health and Wellness
Research indicates that 74% of all nursing home patients experience eating difficulties sometime during their stay (Trupe, Siebens, & Siebens, 1984). Additionally, 59% of patients suffering from stroke experience some degree of dysphagia and aspiration difficulties (Echelard, Thoppil, & Melvin 1984). A significant number of the high risk dysphagia patients described above suffer from life threatening aspiration pneumonia. Consequently the management of swallowing disorders (Dysphagia) is of critical concern to hospital and nursing home personnel. Patients specficially at risk for dysphagia, according to recent studies, include those with head injury, stroke (CVA), and cerebral palsy. Also, patients experiencing cancer of …
The Nutritional Value Of Selected Northeast Iowa School Lunch Programs, Sharon Kay Ubben
The Nutritional Value Of Selected Northeast Iowa School Lunch Programs, Sharon Kay Ubben
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional value of selected Northeast Iowa school lunch programs. This was done by analyzing a consecutive five day sample of the main line lunch from 6 rural schools and 1 metropolitan school. Mean daily nutrient values were obtained through the use of the Dine System for diet analysis. Comparisons were made between the elementary and secondary school lunch programs and also with one-third of the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) and between the urban and rural school programs. Mean nutrient value for energy, protein, sodium, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and …

Nutrition Knowledge Of Wait Staff In 24-Hour, Full Table Service Restaurants, Donna Jean Fischer
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutrition knowledge of wait staff in 24-hour, full menu/table service restaurants. Also explored was the relationship of sex, age, education level, average number of hours worked per week, total length of employment as a wait staff member, and personal dietary interest to knowledge of nutrition in wait staff. In the fall of 1990, 160 questionnaires were delivered to wait staff at eight 24-hour, full menu/table service restaurants in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. The instrument was designed to obtain data concerning nutrition knowledge, and elicit the selected demographic information. The information received …

Mission To collect and report complete, high-quality, and timely population-based cancer data in Louisiana to support cancer research, control, and prevention. Vision To reduce suffering and death from cancer using information collected by the Louisiana Tumor Registry. History Cancer registration in Louisiana began in 1947 at the Charity Hospital Tumor Registry in New Orleans. In 1974, as part of its Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, the National Cancer Institute provided funds for a population-based cancer incidence and survival registry covering Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes. Five years later, the Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR) was transferred to the …
