Community-Centered Early Warning For Outbreaks In Humanitarian Emergencies: Evaluating Community-Based Surveillance For Priority Communicable Diseases Among Internally Displaced Populations In Iraq, Caitlin M. Wolfe
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Community based surveillance (CBS) is the organized and rapid collection of information from health events identified in the community and includes the systematic detection and reporting of events of public health significance. While used globally to enhance the detection of priority diseases, CBS has not been routinely deployed in Iraq, where a once-robust health system has been devastated by decades of war, international sanctions, and large-scale population displacement. During infectious disease outbreaks, it is imperative to quickly detect and isolate suspect cases, investigate confirmed cases, and trace and monitor the contacts of confirmed cases. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the …

Barriers To Hpv Vaccine Acceptance Among Hispanic Immigrants To The Us, Ruth Larson, Brian Poole
Barriers To Hpv Vaccine Acceptance Among Hispanic Immigrants To The Us, Ruth Larson, Brian Poole
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024
•Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority in the United States, making up 18% of the total population.
•This population has lower rates of vaccination for several vaccines, including the COVID-19, HPV, TDAP, influenza, pneumococcal, and Herpes Zoster (Shingles).
•Due to the lower vaccination rates, Hispanics suffer from a larger proportional disease burden for many diseases than their non-Hispanic counterparts.
•Past studies have focused mainly on language barriers, ignoring the complex and diverse culture of Hispanic immigrants that may make an impact on their vaccine uptake.
• The objective of this study is to identify language and cultural …

- Health is shaped by numerous determinants including race, socioeconomic status, education, and personal behaviors
- Addressing determinants often requires the formation and implementation of comprehensive policy
- Public health issues and efforts are intrinsically controversial and can be polarizing
- If individuals are unable to discuss public health issues, long-term viable solutions will not be found
- A dramatic increase in political polarization has occurred since the 1980s leading to less common ground and agreement between political parties on contentious issues4-6
- Research shows reflective structured dialogue improves:
- Polarization attitudes towards openness, tribal identity, and moral disdain
- Knowledge, trust in others, and tolerance of differences …
Investigating The Correlations Between Medicaid And Snap Benefit Levels And Health Outcomes, Will Evans, Michael Barnes, Richard Evans
Investigating The Correlations Between Medicaid And Snap Benefit Levels And Health Outcomes, Will Evans, Michael Barnes, Richard Evans
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024
- Socioeconomic factors, such as poverty, have statistically significant impacts on health.
- SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) and Medicaid are major government programs that exist to reduce these health-detrimental effects for impoverished households.
- Problem: Determining optimal welfare benefit levels is difficult. Despite vastly different costs-of-living between counties, states offer a standard welfare amount to all counties in the state. Simulating benefits based on geographic living expenses can address the political debate about one-size-fits-all benefits found in most states. Simulating optimal benefits based on achieving optimal health effects is needed to improve SNAP and Medicaid.

Somatostatin (SST)-producing pancreatic delta-cells play an important role in maintaining the balance of insulin and glucagon secretion within the islets. This study aimed to generate a human embryonic stem cell (hESC) line with a SST-P2A-mCherry reporter using CRISPR/Cas9 system. The SST-P2A-mCherry reporter cell line was shown to maintain typical pluripotent characteristics and able to be induced into SST-producing pancreatic delta-cells. The generation of the cell line would provide useful platform for the characterization of stem cell-derived delta-cells, discovery of delta-cell surface markers and investigation of paracrine mechanisms, which will ultimately promote the drug discovery and cell therapy of diabetes mellitus.

A Fork In The Road: Uncovering The Impact Of Industrial Animal Agriculture On The Physical Health Of Communities Of Color, Mariana Zepeda
Population Health Research Brief Series
Nearly all (99%) farmed animals in the U.S. come from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). CAFOs are industrial agriculture facilities defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as operations where animals are raised in confinement and meet animal size and waste material thresholds. Communities located near CAFOs, which tend to have high shares of low-income and racial/ethnic minority residents, are at risk of exposure to CAFO-related air and water pollutants. This brief summarizes the health risks for communities located near CAFOs. Additionally, it calls for government regulations that improve transparency, management, and consumer empowerment.

India is a large middle-income country and has surpassed China in overall population, comprising 20% of the global population (over 1.43 billion people). The PICO question that directed the project is: for NPs practicing as advanced practice nurse practitioners within the Southwestern United States region (P), does a comprehensive policy recommendation for FPA for NP-led clinics in the secondary education space (I) compared to existing variable approaches within the region (C) improve access to care and direct or indirect patient outcomes as endorsed by the literature (O)? A comprehensive literature …
