The Economics Of Metals Recovery From Power Plant Fly Ash Via The Ames Hichlor Process, S. J. Weiss, G. Burnet, C. Y. Chang

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The disposal of potentially hazardous coal wastes is becoming a significant problem for the payer industry. The Ames HiChlor process, which utilizes paver plant fly ash as a source of aluminun, is proposed as a method of coal waste utilization. In the HiChlor process fly ash is chlorinated in the presence of a carbonaceous reduct ant at 700 to 900°C to produce alumnum chloride and titaniun tetrachloride as salable products. An economic analysis for a plant vhich would process 6,000 tons per day of fly ash is presented. Conditions under which the proposed process will prove profitable are discussed.

Books

"In 1968, Bank Street College was invited, under the leadership of Elizabeth Gilkeson and Gordon Klopf, to join in the creation of the National Follow Through Program, an effort intended to sustain and extend the gains of Head Start for low income children. Bank Street's subsequent role as a sponsor offered an opportunity to extend knowledge, develop new tools for implementation and serve a diverse children population in many distant sites. The materials in the present volume grew out of Bank Street's efforts in this challenging program." -- Historical note, [p.2]

The successful delivery of human services requires rational program planning. Rational program planning, in turn, requires evaluation of 1) the needs of targeted client groups, 2) the availability of established services to the potential clients, and 3) the utilization of available services by the client population(s). The success of human service delivery systems, therefore, must incorporate the assessment of public programs in terms of the correspondence between client needs and service provision and usage.

A 15 percent population gain in suburban areas and a 4 percent population loss in the central cities between 1970 and 1980 was reported in the preliminary 1980 Census data.1 Vincent B. Barabba, director of the Census Bureau, has stated that a back-to-the-city movement has had a negligible impact on declining cities and will not affect cities much in the future.2 However, the quantity of recent articles on urban housing in professional journals and …

In the early 1970's as the enormous pressure of drug related problems was abating~ the attention of mental health professionals, school personnel, and the criminal justice system was refocused on the problems that come with alcohol. A new phenomenon seemed to be following the drug "scene", the increased alcohol usage among teen-agers and even children. The message was clear: an effort had to be made to prevent alcohol abuse before problem drinking became more widespread.

Will Carter's Welfare Reform Plan Reform Welfare?: Evidence From Empirical Research, Mary Bryna Sanger

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper introduces the central dimensions which have emerged in the current welfare reform debate. They include adaquacy, work incentives, family stability and cost. It addresses the major reform dimensions better than the others and would result in modest improvements. Nevertheless, true reform is unlikely to be achieved by …
