Approaches To Teaching And Learning [V.1], Bank Street College Of Education

Books

"In 1968, Bank Street College was invited, under the leadership of Elizabeth Gilkeson and Gordon Klopf, to join in the creation of the National Follow Through Program, an effort intended to sustain and extend the gains of Head Start for low income children. Bank Street's subsequent role as a sponsor offered an opportunity to extend knowledge, develop new tools for implementation and serve a diverse children population in many distant sites. The materials in the present volume grew out of Bank Street's efforts in this challenging program." -- Historical note, [p.2]

Although that study focused its primary efforts on developing linkages between training programs and community development, the data provide some useful information related to the leadership structure of these communities. These data, describing the individuals who comprise the leadership structure in the study communities, are the focus of this article.

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "A Needs Assessment of Older Hispanics," David R. Martino.

The successful delivery of human services requires rational program planning. Rational program planning, in turn, requires evaluation of 1) the needs of targeted client groups, 2) the availability of established services to the potential clients, and 3) the utilization of available services by the client population(s). The success of human service delivery systems, therefore, must incorporate the assessment of public programs in terms of the correspondence between client needs and service provision and usage.

Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech Jan 1980

Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The possibility of social regulation of wolf populations has been discussed in the literature for several years. Some of the first ecological studies of wolves indicated that their populations did not increase as rapidly as was theoretically possible, and that they reached a saturation point apparently not set by food. Subsequent captive studies demonstrated the existence of social mechanisms possibly capable of regulating population growth. However, the importance of these factors in wild populations has not been established. This paper has four objectives: (1) to evaluate the existing concept of "intrinsic limitation," (2) to propose that wolf population dynamics may …

A Study Of Alcohol Prevention Grants In The State Of Nebraska, 1973-1979, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

In the early 1970's as the enormous pressure of drug related problems was abating~ the attention of mental health professionals, school personnel, and the criminal justice system was refocused on the problems that come with alcohol. A new phenomenon seemed to be following the drug "scene", the increased alcohol usage among teen-agers and even children. The message was clear: an effort had to be made to prevent alcohol abuse before problem drinking became more widespread.

Jacksonville Community Council, Inc.

In the fall of 1979 the Energy Study Committee received its charge: "Moving Toward an Energy Efficient Jacksonville- how should Jacksonville approach this problem?" The report is limited to the examination of the availability and consumption of oil in both the nation and Jacksonville in the short term (the next 5 years), and in the long term (the next 20 years), for the fueling of the transportation system and for the generation …

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight

Masters Theses

The conflict in the Middle East is a turbulent situation of great significance to the entire world. This study examines the internal political scene of Israel and its affect on the overall Middle East situation. It focuses on ideology, structure, and policy within Israel as components of that scene.

The ideology of Zionism provided the justification for the creation of Israel and continues to form the basis for governmental decision making there. An analysis of the principles of Zionism and of the statements, writings, and actions of Zionist leaders showed that the ideology could reasonably be interpreted as racist and …

Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood Jan 1980

Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the nature of social policies and the public policymaking process. It is demonstrated that public social policies tend to accrue an aura or ideology of benevolence that is only partially warranted, and that may be quite misleading to policy analysts and citizenry. The major thrust of the paper is to consider the social policy process as a strategy for public decision-making. As such, properly organized, it can provide an alternative and complementary strategy to electoral politics and protest movements. To be effective as a strategy, three major barriers must be overcome: …
