The Failure Of The Destitute Mother's Bill: The Use Of Political Power In Social Welfare, Eve P. Smith

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although social and economic conditions and prevailing popular philosophies may affect the success or failure of an attempt at change in social welfare policy and practice, the relative strengths and weaknesses of the political forces for and against the change may be more important. In 1897, fourteen years before the passage of the first U.S. Mothers' Pension law in Illinois, New York State Senator John Ahearn attempted such a law in New York. Although the bill was passed unanimously by both houses of the State Legislature, it was never signed into law. The reason was that the children's institutions and …

Volunteer Trustees In Urban United Way Agencies, Rosemarie Scoti Cook

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of role and function of trustees and chief professional officers (CPOs) in non-profit, human services agencies that are members of the United Way of South Hampton Roads. Thousands of volunteer hours are expended annually in serving on boards of directors in the Hampton Roads area. Responsibilities of for-profit board members were divided into four areas: management--control and oversight; adherence to legal …

A follow-up survey conducted three years later found that between 75 percent and 90 percent of city governments owned microcomputers (Scoggins, 1986).

Historical Commentary: Vietnam And Revisionism, David Culver Jan 1987

Historical Commentary: Vietnam And Revisionism, David Culver

Bridgewater Review

Last year General William Westmoreland told a Boston College audience that politicians caused America's defeat in Vietnam. Westmoreland’s charge reflects recent Vietnam War revisionism, the effort to rationalize America’s defeat by claiming that United States forces were prevented from winning. Besides the politicians, who reduced military spending, the revisionists’ cast of villains includes the media and antiwar dissenters, who turned the nation against the war, and various Presidents, who restricted military operations. If polls are to be believed, these interpretations are widely held by Americans, especially Vietnam veterans.
