Years of service in the Air Force has served to reveal the need for an increased awareness of the high cost of training personnel. While many factors are involved in this problem, one particularly important facet is the type and quality of leadership, instruction and supervision which basic trainees are s u b jected to in their initial period of adjustment to military life. This inchoate period of adjustment in the Armed Services is a particularly sensitive one for the individual.

It has been the policy in the Waterloo school system for the past sixteen years to make the transition from manuscript to cursive handwriting during the last six to eight weeks in second grade. The first part of third grade is spent in a review of the formation of the small and capital cursive letters. Cursive writing is taught throughout the remainder of third grade and used as the primary writing tool throughout the grades. One of the personality variables that has been the object of considerable interest in recent years is "need achievement." This variable was first defined by Murray as the need for "success in competition with some standard of excellence." McClelland and his associates, measuring need for achievement from written responses to TAT-type pictures, have reported Significant and useful relationships between this variable and several behavioral criteria.

The purpose of this study is two-fold:

1. To determine relationships between academic success of students in the College of Engineering, University of New Mexico, and their standing in certain entrance examinations; and

2. To recommend cutting scores on the various tests which might be set as standards for admittance to the College of Engineering.

For the purpose of this study, no correlations were drawn between scores on these entrance examinations and grade point averages for university work. The criterion for validity for these tests in this case was not grade point averages, but simply the "succeed-fail" differential. Since a …

The reading process may be considered essentially as a "complex but unitary psychological function". As such, it involves ideational, emotional, and motor aspects as well as the adaptations of the reader to the reading experience. Undoubtedly, of all phases of the school curriculum, the varied aspects and constituents of the reading process have been the most extensively investigated. Yet, the area concerning which least is known is the personality adjustment of the reader. This limitation of research was recognized by Gann over a decade ago, and is as true today as it was then.

It is customary to have a laboratory concurrent with a science course. These laboratories presumably demonstrate the laws and principles of that science. This is done in several ways: by giving the students practical first-hand knowledge of the principles, by having them observe demonstrations or participate in them, by teaching them through “audio-visual aids”, and so on. But it is because certain problems are posed by the very nature of the laboratory. For example, time limits may prevent the completion of experiments or they may be too complicated for the beginning student to undertake.
