Berlyne (1960) has recently suggested that the degree of “novelty” possessed by a given stimulus is inversely related to three factors: (a) how often patterns that are similar enough to be relevant have been experienced before; (b) how similar they have been; and (c) how recently they have been experienced. Stated more simply, Berlyne is referring to the frequency, similarity, and recency of any stimulus.

A causal-comparative study was done in a county hospital using twenty subjects to determine if the ''unprepared" primigravida patient in active labor will experience less pain if given instructions to aid relaxation. It was hypothesized that the "unprepared" primigravida patients receiving continuous nurse attendance plus instructions to aid relaxation by (1) breathing techniques, and (2) body positions would show less evidences of pain, tension and anxiety during the first and second stages of labor than the group of patients which received only the continuous nurse attendance.

This study was concerned with the problem of determining the effect of twinship on the prematurely-born twin's growth and physical and emotional morbidity during early childhood. The immediate purposes of the study were to compare prematurely-born twins with prematurely-born singletons regarding their incidence and types of physical and emotional morbidity, and their growth during early childhood. It was hypothesized that prematurely-born twins have slower growth and more physical and emotional morbidity than prematurely born singletons. The descriptive survey method was used. Although Pavlov (1927) and Skinner (1938) had published articles dealing with the effects of less than 100% reinforcement upon acquisition and extinction, it was not until the Humphrey's investigation (1939) that partial reinforcement became an enigma for leaning theorists. Hull's theory came under the sharpest criticism because with a decrease in the number of reinforcement in acquisition there was not a corresponding decrease in habit strength as measured by resistance to extinction. Despite much criticism, Hull did not deet it necessary to consider the problem of partial reinforcement in his Principles of Behavior (1943). Humphreys, on the other hand, proposed …

In a recent study by Burke (1961), the psychological effects of participation in task-oriented groups were studied. This study incorporated selected communication networks, the wheel, circle, and the all-channel, from a number of experimental arrangements that were conceived and developed by Bavelas (1950). Burke’s eighteen five-man groups were seated at a partitioned table containing slots in a center post through which written messages could be sent. The usual procedure followed by speech therapists in correcting defective articulation is to begin with a period of auditory training before giving direct practice in articulation. Presumably, this auditory training will later transfer to articulation le~rnin5. Defective articulation is the most frequent type of speech problem which a speech therapist must treat. In these cases, a student may omit, distort, or substitute error sounds for the correct articulation of a speech sound, or phoneme. A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. Findings indicated that nineteen or 56 per cent of the thirty-four patients interviewed stated that the second day was most uncomfortable, nine or 27 per cent the third and six or 17 per cent the …

This study investigated the effects of some of the variables operating on the acquisition and extinction of avoidance behavior by mildly retarded adolescent girls. The subjects observed were 20 patients of Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. All the subjects were 15 years of age or older and none of them had reached her twenty-first birthday at the time that the experiment was run. They had adaptive behavior levels of I, II or III.
