Tattooing has evolved into something less than an art, particularity in western cultures, and has lost its original dignity and original significance as well (Abramson,1931). As a result, there has been a great deal of conjecture concerning the psychodynaraics of tattooing (Edgerton & Dingman,1963; Hamburger,1966; Hamburger & Lacovara,1963). The present study was an attempt to investigate the psychodynamics of tattooing through the use of one measure of anxiety and two measures of body image with tattooed and nontattooed individuals. An analysis of rule learning (RL) data suggests that an important factor in bidimensional concept learning is the degree to which stimuli share common stimulus values. Subjects have the most difficulty with differentially assigned stimuli which have common values and with stimuli which are assigned to the same response category but have no common values. Based on these findings, an experiment was run with four bidimensional stimuli to determine how Ss will respond to non-reinforced test stimuli after the reinforcement of one or two stimuli to the same or different response categories. Changes In Peer Conformity Across Age On Normative And Informational Tasks, Susan C. Wright

The influence of adult and peer models on Ss from grades 2, 5, 8, and 11 was measured on informational and normative tasks. Social influence was produced by presenting televised adult and peer model answers after each informational (dot discrepancy) and normative (art pictures) problem. The predictions that peer conformity would be positively related to age, and that peers would be more influential on normative tasks were not supported (p ˂ .05). While similar levels of peer conformity occurred for males and females on informational tasks, males conformed significantly more to peers on normative tasks than females. In addition, conformity …

This study represents an attempt to determine some of the neural correlates of habituation to repetitive auditory stimulation, and to relate those correlates to the existing theories concerning habituation mechanisms. As the following literature review will reveal, a well controlled correlational study dealing with habituation to auditory stimulation is needed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether number of responses is related to the social desirability and intensity of the test items. 61 Ss were administered the Interpersonal Check List and the Marlowe Crowne Social Desirability Scale. From the Interpersonal Check List number of responses, average item intensity and average item social desirability were calculated. Average item social desirability was calculated from individual item social desirability values obtained from ratings by another, similar S group. The effects of category label (positiveness or negativeness) and category composition (differences in the stimuli composing each category) were investigated in two experiments with concepts which were previously deemed most likely to yield a persistent advantage to positive instances. Category label effects were separated from category composition effects by using pairs of complementary concepts and requiring Ss to solve with only positive instances or only negative instances. Results showed that category composition was a more important determiner of performance than was category label. The relatively weak category label effects which were obtained were limited to specific conditions of category composition. …

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effect of different rest interval activities in distributed practice (DP) upon the rate of learning a PA task, to evaluate the effectiveness of different rest interval activities in controlling rehearsal, and to investigate the role of rehearsal in DP performance.

Three experiments compared three different pairs of rest interval activities. One pair of activities, color naming (CN) and sequential addition (SA), was machine paced (MPA). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group systematic desensitization on the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea in relation to anxiety. The sample consisted of an experimental group of 12 women drawn from the University of New Mexico Student Health Center and the Presbyterian Hospital School of Practical Nursing who were treated in four sessions with group systematic desensitization focused on menstruation, and a control group drawn from the Bernalillo County Planned Parenthood Association not treated with group systematic desensitization. A study of 958 managers is reported which investigates, by questionnaire, differences in perceived deficiencies in need fulfillment at all levels of management in both large and small organizations. It further gives attention to the relative importance of 13 personality traits for success in their management position, and examines whether motivational commonality exists among various job conditions at all levels of management. Results indicate: (a) all levels of management tend to be similar in the relative ranks they give to the importance of needs regardless of size of organization, (b) self-actualization and autonomy needs seem to be most important by …

This report reviews the psychological and psycholinguistic literature from the last decade that deals with memory for sentences. It is concluded the the encoded representation of a sentence reflects both syntactic and semantic content, with the semantic content being far less transient.

The play patterns and stimulus preference of 20 preschool children were observed during low and high s tress conditions. The stress manipulation was contingent upon the child's preparation for a medical appointment. Heart rate recordings and a questionnaire were used as Indices of stress. Children manifested a preference toward creative-constructive play under conditions of increased stress , with a resultant decrease in manipulative and imaginative play. Play with relevant or irrelevant toys did not change significantly during the increased stress condition. Pencil—paper measures of stress used in previous studies were significantly related to the physiological measure of stress . No …

Assessing Some Side Effects Of A Contingency Management Program, Charles M. Atkinson

This study applied a contingency management program to a single behavior while measuring multiple behaviors. Reinforcement was made contingent upon increased addition rate. The experimental group made significantly greater gains in addition rate. There was no significant difference in the gains made in subtraction rate, reading rate, reading comprehension, or classroom behavior. The study was limited by a small sample, six week time span, and the use of mentally retarded subjects to assess side effects of reinforcing an academic behavior.
