Predictors Of General And Dating-Related Conflict Among Parents And Middle Adolescents: The Active Role Of The Adolescent, Bonnie Brodzeller Dowdy Jan 1994

Predictors Of General And Dating-Related Conflict Among Parents And Middle Adolescents: The Active Role Of The Adolescent, Bonnie Brodzeller Dowdy

Theses and Dissertations

Current treatments of parent-adolescent conflict and autonomy development neglect the active role adolescents can play in managing conflict. The present study tests a conceptual model based on developmental theory. Dating is postulated as a salient source of conflict for parents and middle adolescents. Adolescents will utilize cognitive strategies to achieve dating-related goals. These strategies include both neutral (talking and selective disclosure) and negative (lying and using friends to cover for you) forms of filtering information parents receive in order to achieve their dating-related goals. General developmental and domain-specific factors were postulated to directly affect as well as moderate the effects …

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman Jan 1994

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this article I first offer a brief historical account of European white settlement, and ultimately political dominance, in southern Africa. Next, I outline how whites, and in particular Afrikaner-dominated National Party governments after 1948, achieved almost total subjugation of South Africa’s black majority through oppressive legislation and the calculated use of force. In that regard I enumerate some of the draconian laws enacted in the post-1948 apartheid state — laws that served as an impetus for black nationalism, anger, resistance, protest and, after 1960, armed struggle to achieve liberation from white oppression. Against this background, I examine salient factors …

The College Attributional Complexity Scale: Development, Validation, And Relationship To University Adjustment, Michael David Smith Jan 1994

The College Attributional Complexity Scale: Development, Validation, And Relationship To University Adjustment, Michael David Smith

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis had three purposes: the first was to develop a self-report scale that measures the attributional complexity of university students; the second was to examine the relationship between attributional complexity and university adjustment; and the third was to examine the relationship between attributional complexity and coping styles. In study 1, 217 students completed the newly developed 20-item College Attributional Complexity Scale (CACS), and several self-report measures used to assess its validity. Results showed that the scale had good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Also, a principal components analysis revealed that the scale had one main factor. Results concerning the …

[Introduction To] Metaphors In The History Of Psychology, David E. Leary Jan 1994

[Introduction To] Metaphors In The History Of Psychology, David E. Leary

Bookshelf

Metaphors in the History of Psychology describes and analyzes the ways in which psychological accounts of brain functioning, consciousness, cognition, emotion, motivation, learning, and behavior have been shaped--and are still being shaped--by the central metaphors used by contemporary psychologists and their predecessors. The contributors to this volume argue that psychologists and their predecessors have invariably turned to metaphor in order to articulate their descriptions, theories, and practical interventions with regard to psychological functioning. By specifying the major metaphors in the history of psychology, these contributors have offered a new "key" to understanding this critically important area of human knowledge. This …

Differences In Attributions Between College-Age Female Recreational Players And Scholarship Athletes, Leanne Rae Wagner Jan 1994

Differences In Attributions Between College-Age Female Recreational Players And Scholarship Athletes, Leanne Rae Wagner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of skill level on the attributions made by recreational players and scholarship athletes. The subjects consisted of volunteers from the general population of St. Ambrose University (n = 11) and the University of Northern Iowa intercollegiate volleyball team (n = 12). The subjects were asked to perform two individual skill tests. The scores from the skill tests were recorded but not used in the analysis. Performance feedback was manipulated to create a ·perception of success in one skill test and failure in the second skill test. After completing each of …

Depression And Memory: Are Impairments Remediable Through Attentional Control?, Paula T. Hertel Jan 1994

Depression And Memory: Are Impairments Remediable Through Attentional Control?, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

People who are in depressed mood states or who are formally diagnosed as clinically depressed frequently complain of impaired memory. Such complaints have been substantiated by laboratory research, most of which supports the theoretical assumption that attentional resources play a causal role in producing the impairments. Specific theoretical frameworks do differ, however, in the proposed nature of this role and in their corresponding implications for remediation. The most prevalent positions are versions of a capacity framework (e.g., cognitive effort or resource allocation). 1 If you are depressed, according to the capacity framework, your attentional resources are either reduced neurochemically or …

Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy Upon Episodic Memory In Individuals Reporting Alcoholic Blackouts, W. R. Miller, Paula T. Hertel, C. Saucedo, R. K. Hester Jan 1994

Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy Upon Episodic Memory In Individuals Reporting Alcoholic Blackouts, W. R. Miller, Paula T. Hertel, C. Saucedo, R. K. Hester

Psychology Faculty Research

In a within-subject placebo design, 10 heavy drinkers reporting alcoholic blackouts showed significant decrements in episodic memory when receiving alcohol but not on days when a placebo was given. Parallel deficits were observed on recall and recognition measures. On placebo days, self-ratings of intoxication were related to the degree of observed performance decrement. Memory deficits appear to be primarily pharmacologic rather than expectancy effects of drinking.

Emotionality In Free Recall: Language Specificity In Bilingual Memory, L. J. Anooshian, Paula T. Hertel Jan 1994

Emotionality In Free Recall: Language Specificity In Bilingual Memory, L. J. Anooshian, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

Bilingual subjects (Spanish English) who had acquired fluency in their second language after 8 years of age rated 18 emotional and 18 neutral words for ease of pronunciation, implied activity, or emotionality; half of each type was presented in Spanish and half in English. During a subsequent, unexpected test of free recall subjects recalled more emotional than neutral words, but only for words that had been presented in the native language. This finding applied across native-language groups and suggests that emotion provides a basis for language specificity in bilingual memory.

Depressive Deficits In Word Identification And Recall, Paula T. Hertel Jan 1994

Depressive Deficits In Word Identification And Recall, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

Depressed and nondepressed adults rated positive, negative, and neutral nouns for their emotional value or their physical curvature. Next, they tried to identify previously rated and unrated words that were presented quite briefly and masked. Depressed subjects' identification showed a reduced effect of prior exposure in the curvature task but no deficit when words had been rated for emotion. On a subsequent test of free recall, both a depressive deficit and a rating effect obtained. These results suggest that depressed people are less likely to process beyond the requirements of the task.

Intact Families With A Multiple Sclerotic Parent: Social And Emotional Adjustment Of Parents And School-Age Children, Jean A. Mccutchan Jan 1994

Intact Families With A Multiple Sclerotic Parent: Social And Emotional Adjustment Of Parents And School-Age Children, Jean A. Mccutchan

Dissertations

Problem Statement. Research on children with a multiple sclerotic parent has been minimal and until recently focused only on negative aspects. This study investigated how families successfully cope with multiple sclerosis (MS) and how their school-age children are affected, positively or negatively.

Methodology. This research used the case study approach with intact Caucasian families, 10 where the mother was the patient and 3 families where the father was the patient. The 20 children were ages 5 through 19. Following a clinical interview, the family members responded to the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales-II, the Family Hardiness Index and the …

Reactions To Childhood Sibling Death: A Qualitative Investigation, Mary A. Paulson Jan 1994

Reactions To Childhood Sibling Death: A Qualitative Investigation, Mary A. Paulson

Dissertations

Problem

In looking at the importance of sibling relationships, we see that the death of a sibling can cause considerable disruption to the surviving child's development. A review of the childhood sibling loss literature indicated that no study was found that investigated the effects of sibling loss on depression and psychosocial development and studied reactions to sibling loss and its effects on cognition, emotions, behaviors, interpersonal relations, and spirituality.

Method

Thirty subjects participated in this research and composed three developmental groups. Erik Erikson's psychosocial developmental stages were utilized in this investigation. The subjects were grouped according to their age at …

Electrodermal Activity As A Function Of Name Stimulus Match And Facial Familiarity, Donald Cherry Jan 1994

Electrodermal Activity As A Function Of Name Stimulus Match And Facial Familiarity, Donald Cherry

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present experiment examines the relationship between name stimulus match and facial familiarity using electrodermal activity (EDA) as a dependent measure. Twenty male and 20 female undergraduate students from Old Dominion University were used as subjects. A within-subjects design allowed subjects in the experimental conditions to view familiar written names and faces which varied on the dimension of naming (name-face pairings). Three combinations of naming conditions were incorporated: (1) match, (2) mismatch, and (3) no name. As a control, subjects experienced the same naming conditions, but the names and faces were unfamiliar. Results based on EDA amplitudes revealed that familiar …
