Morphine-Induced Modification Of Quinine Palatability: Effects Of Multiple Morphine-Quinine Trials, Sharon Nicola D.A. Clarke Jan 1994

Morphine-Induced Modification Of Quinine Palatability: Effects Of Multiple Morphine-Quinine Trials, Sharon Nicola D.A. Clarke

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Contemporary research investigating the effects of opiate receptor agonists and antagonists indicates a role for endorphinergic mechanisms in the control of consummatory behaviours. One way in which opiates may exert an effect on feeding is by altering the hedonic properties or palatability of food and drink. Investigations of the role of palatability in the effect of opiates on feeding and drinking have primarily considered the effect of single exposures to opiates. Recognizing that chronic exposure to opiates may result in the development of tolerance to their palatability-altering properties, the taste reactivity test, a direct measure of the hedonic properties of …

The Role Of Adult Romantic Attachment In Marital Communication, Kimberly Jill Ewing Jan 1994

The Role Of Adult Romantic Attachment In Marital Communication, Kimberly Jill Ewing

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Most married couples experience conflict and disagreement in their relationships. However, some couples deal with this conflict more effectively than do others. Although something is known about patterns of marital interaction, little is known about what predisposes couples to engage in harmonious or conflictual interactions. It seems that factors such as personal predispositions should play a role in couple communication. The present study investigated the association between romantic attachment styles and specific aspects of couple communication. Thirty-nine couples experiencing the transition to parenthood participated in a discussion of a real-life conflict of their own choosing; The discussion was videotaped and …

Planting The Seeds Of Hope: Research And Action On Body Image Of University Students, Michelle Poechman Fisher Jan 1994

Planting The Seeds Of Hope: Research And Action On Body Image Of University Students, Michelle Poechman Fisher

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A number of researchers have expressed concern regarding the growing prevalence of body dissatisfaction, especially among North American women. Such body dissatisfaction is often linked to dieting, weight concerns, excessive exercise, poor nutrition, and eating disorders. In order to expand our awareness and understanding of university students’ needs with regards to issues concerning body image, a needs assessment was conducted in two universities located in southwestem Ontario. In focus groups and individual interviews, students were asked directly about the issues they find most troublesome, their experiences in the recovery process, and their needs for supportive and preventive interventions. In order …

A Stakeholder Approach To Sexual Assault Prevention Programming In The Halton Board Of Education, Judith Ann Gould Jan 1994

A Stakeholder Approach To Sexual Assault Prevention Programming In The Halton Board Of Education, Judith Ann Gould

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

There are few examples of sexual assault education interventions within the high schools. Research about programmes delivered at universities indicates that the programmes do not change the rape-supportive beliefs of participants (Lenihan, Rawlins, Eberly, Buckley, & Masters, 1992). A criticism of these programmes is that students do not participate in their own learning. A curriculum-writing team at the I-Ialton Board or Education developed two lessons on sexual assault as part of the grade nine “Healthy Sexuality" curriculum. The sexual assault lessons were then piloted with three grade nine classes. After delivery, six to eight students from each class participated in …

Changing Authoritarians' Attitudes: The Role Of Authority Legitimacy, Bruce Allen Parker Jan 1994

Changing Authoritarians' Attitudes: The Role Of Authority Legitimacy, Bruce Allen Parker

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study investigated the tendency of right-wing authoritarians (RWAs) to yield to established and legitimate authorities. University students enrolled in an Introductory Psychology course read two persuasive passages. One passage concerned whether homosexuals should be allowed to become schoolteachers, while the other discussed whether an aggressive proselytizing religious group should be allowed to recruit students on university campuses. Some of the participants were informed that the passage was written by a highly established and legitimate authority; others were told the passage came from a less established and legitimate authority. In addition, the passages were manipulated so that half supported and …

The Use Of Dance In The Promotion Of Mental Health In Girls: An Exploratory Study, Irene E. Rossberg-Gempton

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study had two purposes: (1) to understand how girls experience dance and (2) to examine the idea of using dance as a venue to promote psychological well—being and artistic growth in young children. Fifteen girls between the ages of 3 1/2 and 10 years old participated in a dance program offering dance warm ups, dance techniques, sequential dance steps, pantomime explorations, and creative dance. Methods of data collection included journal notes, video—taped observations, parental interviews, and children's self—reports, drawings, and interviews. The formative evaluation of this dance program indicated that the participants of this small rural community had happy …

Use Of Visual And Tactile Behaviors By Rats (Rattus Norvegicus) In An Object Discrimination Swimming Task, Todd Wiebers

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

When challenged with a cognitive task, rats demonstrate a behavioral flexibility in use and preference of sensory modalities. The present study describes visual and tactile behaviors used by rats in a two choice object discrimination swimming task. The task was designed to preclude use of other sensory modalities and could not be solved via spatial strategies. Fourteen rats learned to criterion a series of 10 discrimination problems. Rats exhibited three stereotypic visual and two stereotypic tactile behaviors over the course of the study. Data analyses indicated that rats demonstrated these behaviors more frequently as they became more familiar with the …

(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy Jan 1994

(1994) The Five Communities, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

Those of us who have experienced the joy and terror of the intensive formation of a philosophical community of inquiry (COI) over an extended period, understand intuitively that it is a process of development which has certain characteristic structures and patterns. These can be glossed in a number of ways, all of which will be metaphors, if only because any given moment in the life of the COI is an instant of vertiginous freedom. The five structural dimensions of the COI which I am identifying are gesture, language, mind, love, and interest. I want to call them "communities" because each …

Personal Space And Territoriality Of Users In An Academic And Public Library, Ruth A. Hamilton

Graduate Research Papers

An observation checklist was used to investigate responses of patrons to intrusion in their personal space. The study was done in a small academic library and a small public library. After the subject was seated an intruder would come in and sit as close to the subject as possible. The responding time was limited to five minutes. The response of the subject was recorded on a detailed checklist. Findings indicated that female subjects make more adjustments than male subjects. In general, adjustments made by subjects were minimal in number and minor in nature.

A Study Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Resettled And Refugee Cambodians, Jolene Malinee Aitken

Master's Theses

Problem

With the onset of the Cambodian holocaust, as well as over 40 years of continual war in Cambodia, the Khmer people have been subjected to an existence of prolonged exposure to disaster, contributing to the alarming prevalence of the mental health disorder of post-traumatic stress among Cambodians today. Post-traumatic stress disorder is the debilitating syndrome described as the development of characteristic symptoms following a psychologically traumatic event that is generally outside the range of usual human experience (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd edition revised, [DSM-III-R], 1987). The purpose of this study was to examine the existence …

Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: Overcoming Barriers To Inclusion, Richard F. Ittenbach, Brian H. Abery, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Robert W. Prouty Jan 1994

Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: Overcoming Barriers To Inclusion, Richard F. Ittenbach, Brian H. Abery, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Robert W. Prouty

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Movement of persons with mental retardation out of institutions and into community settings is occurring at an ever-increasing pace (Amado, Lakin, & Menke, 1990). State and federal laws have legitimized the basic rights of persons with mental retardation to live, work, and participate in typical community settings. Yet, physical integration is not synonymous with full community inclusion. Numerous barriers remain that serve as obstacles to successful assimilation into community life. For instance, successful social integration depends on attitudinal changes of persons without mental retardation—families, friends, service-delivery professionals, and the general public—toward persons with mental retardation. The way young adults with …

Generalization Of The Four Roles Found In Adult Children Of Alcoholics To A College Population, Todd E. Pienkos Jan 1994

Generalization Of The Four Roles Found In Adult Children Of Alcoholics To A College Population, Todd E. Pienkos

Masters Theses

The Children's Roles Inventory was developed to assess the four theoretical children's roles found not only in alcoholic families but in all families regardless of parental alcoholism: the Hero, Mascot, Lost Child, and Scapegoat. A sample of 266 college students, with 19% indicating parental alcoholism, completed the CRI and measures of self-actualization and self-esteem to verify any differences between the identified groups of adult children of alcoholics, adults from nonalcoholic families and the four roles within. Demographic information was also obtained including: gender, age, and whether the individual was a member of a fraternity or sorority.

Significant differences were found …

A Study Of The Adaptive Functioning And The Behavioral And Emotional Problems Of Child Victims And Witnesses Of Family Violence, Christine E. Rinkel

Masters Theses

Behavior problems and adaptive behavior were evaluated in a sample of 30 children, mean age 9.5 years, whose mothers had been temporarily residing in a shelter or had been receiving shelter services during the 6 1/2 months of data collection. Using a sequential sampling design, the mother of every child exposed to family violence, was selected. Fifteen mothers were interviewed regarding the nature of the violence that their children had witnessed and/or experienced (including type, frequency, duration, and recency of the violence) as well as the nature of their children's adaptive behavior (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales). Mothers also rated their …

Shame And Guilt In Christian Children: Interventions With Projective Techniques And Play Therapy, Nancy S. Thurston Jan 1994

Shame And Guilt In Christian Children: Interventions With Projective Techniques And Play Therapy, Nancy S. Thurston

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Psychotherapy issues for religiously committed clients have been explored in several recent books and articles. While these works have focused on adults, little has been written on the therapy issues of religiously committed children. Emerging research suggests that children's conceptions of God are guite different than that of adults. Moreover, due to their concrete thinking, children often find it hard to grasp theological foundations to the Christian faith (e.g., salvation by grace) that adults typically assimilate into their world view. While chil־ dren generally learn of God's grace and mercy in Sunday school, it has been found that some of …

When "Perfect Fear Casts Out All Love": Christian Perspectives On The Assessment And Treatment Of Shame, Nancy S. Thurston

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Shame reactions are often uncomfortable, even excruciating, for clients to work through in therapy. When not adequately treated, shame reactions can seriously disrupt the therapy process. This article seeks to equip Christian mental health professionals with practical strategies for effectively assessing and treating shame reactions. Theoretical perspectives on shame within a Christian context are also briefly discussed.

Ret, Constructivism And Christianity: A Hermeneutic For Christian Cognitive Therapy, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1994

Ret, Constructivism And Christianity: A Hermeneutic For Christian Cognitive Therapy, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Constructivism has brought changes in cognitive therapy, including RationalEmotive Therapy, in recent years. The benefits of constructivism in cognitive therapy include a stronger tie with personality theory, greater appreciation of contextual factors affecting individual clients, and opportunities for considering religious values in therapy. The major liability of constructivism is that it allows little room for external sources of authority. A Christian hermeneutic is presented which allows cognitive therapists to enjoy the benefits of constructivism within a worldview that asserts authoritative boundaries. Clinical implications are discussed.

Depressive Deficits In Recognition: Dissociation Of Recollection And Familiarity, Paula T. Hertel, S. Milan Jan 1994

Depressive Deficits In Recognition: Dissociation Of Recollection And Familiarity, Paula T. Hertel, S. Milan

Psychology Faculty Research

Dysphoric and nondysphoric students (48 women and 24 men) participated in an experiment that was designed to separate automatic and controlled uses of memory in a modified recognition paradigm. First, they judged the relation of target words to paired words. Later they made recognition decisions on target items alone or in the context of the original paired item. The use of L.L. Jacoby's (1991) process dissociation procedure revealed depressive deficits in estimates of recollection but not in estimates of familiarity. The paired test improved recollection for all subjects and showed a trend in the direction of increased familiarity. These outcomes …
