The Relationship Of Mmpi-A Item Effectiveness To Item Content, Diagnostic Category, And Classification Accuracy, Kathleen D. Lynch
The Relationship Of Mmpi-A Item Effectiveness To Item Content, Diagnostic Category, And Classification Accuracy, Kathleen D. Lynch
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Archer, Handel, and Lynch (2001) recently compared the item endorsement frequencies for the MMPI-A normative sample against two adolescent clinical samples. Results showed that the MMPI-A contains a substantial number of items that do not show a significant difference in item endorsement frequency between normative and clinical samples. The current study extends Archer et al.'s (2001) research in three ways: (1) it examines the item endorsement frequencies of the Supplementary scales, Harris Lingoes subscales, and subtle-obvious items; (2) it examines the Basic, Content, and Supplementary scales, and Harris Lingoes subscales with two homogeneous diagnostic criterion groups (as suggested by Archer, …

“Bin Laden’S Brain”: The Abrasively Negativistic Personality Of Dr. Ayman Al-Zawahiri, Aubrey Immelman, Kathryn Kuhlmann
Psychology Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of Ayman al-Zawahiri, deputy leader of the al-Qaida terrorist network at the time of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States and allegedly chief strategist for al-Qaida operations and personal physician to Osama bin Laden.
Al-Zawahiri’s primary personality patterns were found to be Contentious/oppositional and Dominant/controlling, with secondary features of the Dauntless/dissenting and Ambitious/self-serving patterns.
The amalgam of Contentious (negativistic, or passive-aggressive) and Dominant (aggressive, or sadistic) patterns in al-Zawahiri’s profile suggests the presence of the “abrasive negativist” syndrome. For these personalities, minor frictions easily …
Identifying The Dimensions Of Integrity: A Confirmatory And Discriminant Validity Analysis, Arlene Pace Green
Identifying The Dimensions Of Integrity: A Confirmatory And Discriminant Validity Analysis, Arlene Pace Green
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
While Integrity tests have demonstrated significant predictive and concurrent validity, the meaning and structure of integrity test scores are not well understood. The purpose of the present investigation was to empirically verify the results of a previous study that used an inductive method to define integrity and identify its constituent dimensions (Green, 1999). Specifically, the present investigation used item analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, discriminant validity analysis, and an analysis of social desirability to test the validity of the five integrity dimensions identified by Green (1999): Concern for Others, Conscientiousness, Emotional Control, Fairness, and Honesty. Results confirmed that Integrity acts as …
How Individuals Understand Depression: Attributions, Stigma, And Treatment Recommendations, Erin A. Pladsen
How Individuals Understand Depression: Attributions, Stigma, And Treatment Recommendations, Erin A. Pladsen
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study examined participants' beliefs/attributions about depression, their help seeking recommendations for depressed individuals, and the stigma associated with depression. Participants were asked to read a vignette that described a target person who is suffering from depression, and they were asked to complete various questionnaires based upon the vignette. Overall, the results indicated that individuals did not possess negative attitudes toward mental illness, that individuals more strongly recommended professional mental health assistance, and that individuals did not tend to stigmatize depressed individuals. Results did indicate that the label of depression and the gender of the target person affected provider type …
The Prediction Of Intra-Individual Variability In The Daily Body-Image Experiences Among College Women, Susan E. Melnyk
The Prediction Of Intra-Individual Variability In The Daily Body-Image Experiences Among College Women, Susan E. Melnyk
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This investigation examined body-image states in the context of daily life. There were 108 women who completed all three phases of this study. First, a battery of body image trait measures and an eating attitudes measure were completed. Second, participants called an automated telephonic response system twice daily for six days and recorded their current body-image states, from the questions on the Body Image States Scale. Finally, a Post-Study Questionnaire was completed. Pearson correlations examined the extent to which the pretest measures predicted the level and variability of body-image states. Consistent with hypotheses, greater satisfaction with one' appearance, less dysfunctional …

Anxiety, Stress, And Health In Northern Plains Native Americans, Tami J. De Coteau, Debra A. Hope, Jessiline Anderson
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
In the present study, the Beck Anxiety Inventory (Beck, Epstein, Brown, & Steer, 1988), Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory (Peterson & Reiss, 1992), the Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale (Holmes & Rahe, 1967), Northern Plains Bicultural Inventory (Allen & French, 1994), and a health questionnaire were administered to investigate the relationship between anxiety, stressful events, health, and cultural participation among 147 Native American adults from a Midwestern reservation community. The results of these self-report measures indicated that, as has been found in the majority culture, stressful life events predicted physical health problems and self-reported anxiety. The hypothesis that participation in and identification …

Radiation Of Black Beauty: Perceptions Of Self-Esteem And Self-Efficacy Based On Facial Attractiveness And Skin-Tone Of African Americans, Solomon Luckett, Jr.
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The phenomenon of radiating beauty refers to the positive perception people have of an individual who is closely associated with a person of high facial attractiveness. This study examined the radiating beauty effect in the African American community. The historical perspective of skin tone and its role in intra-racial physical attraction among African Americans was explored. Specifically, this study investigated the possibility of the radiating beauty phenomenon in the African American community and the effects of attractiveness and skin tone. Thirty African American females were recruited for a validation study to establish empirically the degree of facial attractiveness and skin …

Religiousness And Depression: Evidence For A Main Effect And The Moderating Influence Of Stressful Life Events, Timothy B. Smith, Michael E. Mccullough, Justin Poll
Faculty Publications
The association between religiousness and depressive symptoms was examined with meta-analytic methods across 147 independent investigations (N = 98,975). Across all studies, the correlation between religiousness and depressive symptoms was –.096, indicating that greater religiousness is mildly associated with fewer symptoms. The results were not moderated by gender, age, or ethnicity, but the religiousness–depression association was stronger in studies involving people who were undergoing stress due to recent life events. The results were also moderated by the type of measure of religiousness used in the study, with extrinsic religious orientation and negative religious coping (e.g., avoiding difficulties through religious activities, …

Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Syndrome Following A Car Accident, D. B. Boivin, F. O. James, Jonathan Bruce Santo, O. Caliyurt, C. Chalk
Psychology Faculty Publications
The authors report the case of a 39-year-old sighted woman who displayed non-24-hour sleep–wake cycles following a car accident. The phase relationship between endogenous circadian markers such as plasma melatonin and 6-sulfatoxymelatonin rhythms and self-selected sleep times was abnormal. A laboratory investigation indicated that she was sensitive to bright light as a circadian synchronizer. MRI and brain CT scans were normal, but microscopic brain damage in the vicinity of the suprachiasmatic nucleus or its output pathways is plausible.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy With Non-Ambulatory Clients In The Treatment Of Depressive Symptoms, Kevin C. O'Leary
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to expand the current research on the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the treatment of depressive symptoms with a non-ambulatory client experiencing dysthymic depression. Using a single subject AB design, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was implemented during weekly sessions with Beck Depression Inventory and the Leahy Anxiety Checklist for Patients as outcome measures. Results suggest that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be used in the treatment of depressive symptoms in non-ambulatory clients. Clients with physical disabilities who experience mental illness have unique requirements suggesting the need for additional research.

Habitat-Predator Association And Avoidance In Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Spp.), Culum Brown
Habitat-Predator Association And Avoidance In Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Spp.), Culum Brown
Sentience Collection
The ability to recall the location of a predator and later avoid it was tested in nine populations of rainbowfish (Melanotaenia spp.), representing three species from a variety of environments. Following the introduction of a model predator into a particular microhabitat, the model was removed, the arena rotated and the distribution of the fish recorded again. In this manner it could be determined what cues the fish relied on in order to recall the previous location of the predator model. Fish from all populations but one (Dirran Creek) were capable of avoiding the predator by remembering either the location and/or …
Considering Animals—Not “Higher” Primates, Marc Bekoff
Considering Animals—Not “Higher” Primates, Marc Bekoff
Sentience Collection
In this essay I argue that many nonhuman animal beings are conscious and have some sense of self. Rather than ask whether they are conscious, I adopt an evolutionary perspective and ask why consciousness and a sense of self evolved—what are they good for? Comparative studies of animal cognition, ethological investigations that explore what it is like to be a certain animal, are useful for answering this question. Charles Darwin argued that the differences in cognitive abilities and emotions among animals are differences in degree rather than differences in kind, and his view cautions against the unyielding claim that humans, …
