An Investigation Of The Visual Processes Involved In The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Robert L. Vette
An Investigation Of The Visual Processes Involved In The Vertical-Horizontal Illusion, Robert L. Vette
Masters Theses
The vertical-horizontal illusion has been the object of experimental study for many years. The first man to investigate the vertical-horizontal illusion was probably Oppel in 1854. Since the time of Oppel's first experiment, many theories have been advanced in an attempt to explain what causes this illusion to occur in our perception of connected vertical-horizontal lines. The primary theory that is most widely accepted states that the vertical line in the "T" illusion will be judged longer because of the vertical-horizontal relationship.
Pan (1934) suggested that the "T" figure illusion was not due entirely to the interaction of the vertical …

A Developmental Study Of Temporal Judgment, Faye Florena Hagemeyer
A Developmental Study Of Temporal Judgment, Faye Florena Hagemeyer
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Temporal disorganization is a symptom of disorder manifested by both the aged psychotic and the harmless sanile. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of temporal judgment, specifically the adult human’s ability to judge the passage of time accurately, to chronological age. The study was suggested by a prominent geriatrician who conjecture as to whether the disability to estimate and to order time effectively was a dysfunction peculiar to senility and its gradual deterioration even in normal human beings in the ability to judge time accurately.
Using a time estimation test requiring judgement of various intervals of …
Dogmatism And Perceptual Rigidity, Sylvia Joan Joy
Dogmatism And Perceptual Rigidity, Sylvia Joan Joy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Early efforts to relate personality rigidity and perceptual rigidity have left volumes of data which are somewhat ambiguous and largely inconclusive. These studies have, in general, rested upon two assumptions: (1) that any measure of perceptual rigidity may be related to a measure of personality rigidity, and (2) that the relationship between the two variables is linear. Subsequent data have placed both assumptions in doubt. Several studies indicate that only certain forms of perceptual rigidity may be directly related to personality rigidity (Baer, 1961; Bogen, 1962; Chown, 1959). Other studies have, directly or indirectly, introduced the possibility of a non-linear …

Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway
Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It is commonly recognized that hospitalized children need psychological support and preparation for painful procedures. It is probable that little thought is given by hospital personnel to a similar preparation of the child for non-painful procedures. This study attempted to evaluate the distress incurred by children subjected to non-painful hospital procedures with little or no preparation. The procedure of x-ray was selected as being common and typical. The method used was the descriptive survey. The tools used were the taking of a series of six blood pressure readings per child, the administration of two forms of a short psychological test …

The Measurement Of Some Aspects Of Self Concept Related To Rehabilitation Of The Physically Handicapped, Sarah Ashman
Graduate Thesis Collection
"The emergence of rehabilitation as a social movement may be a significant contribution of the twentieth century to human development. Each step toward freeing human potentiality from the limitations of disability contributes to the dignity and growth of all mankind." (14:1) Through accident or disease. thousands each year are faced with the problems of physical disability. While the major concern in the rehabilitation of these people is the restoration or improvement of physical function. the social and psychological effects of disability are now being recognized as weighing heavily in the total adjustment to the problems of coping with life in …
The Relationship Of Orthodoxy And Prejudice Among Seminary Students Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Donald Sorensen
The Relationship Of Orthodoxy And Prejudice Among Seminary Students Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Donald Sorensen
Theses and Dissertations
Research of the relationship between orthodoxy and prejudice is not clear. Some studies report those who acknowledge church membership to be less tolerant than those who do not. Other investigators find either slight differences or no differences among the attitudes of members of different religions. Still others find important differences in acceptance of orthodox religious beliefs and attitudes toward minority groups.

Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of the study was to·make· a comparison of the drunk driving behavior of college students with that· of those persons in a similar age group who have not had college experience. There is very little published information about the statutes governing "driving under the influence of liquor" (D.U.I.L.). The educable nature of persons involved in such offenses 8 and the probable anti-social and sociopathic behavior in individuals leading up to the offenses, also need thorough investigation. Very pertinent also is the question whether or not there is a biological basis for this particular behavior; an understanding of …
