The Effect Of Individual Instruction Versus Group Instruction On Compliance In C.O.P.D. Patients, Renee L. Hills May 1981

The Effect Of Individual Instruction Versus Group Instruction On Compliance In C.O.P.D. Patients, Renee L. Hills

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Because of the evolution of hospitals from general care to acute care centers, the need for more outpatient therapy programs had increased in an effort to aid patients in managing their health care at home. As a result, health care professionals were concerned with the extent to which patients would follow their medication and treatment programs. Marston estimated that approximately 30 to 35 percent of patients fail to follow their physicians' medical recommendations (Marston, 1970).

Discovering a means of insuring patient compliance was a prevalent concern in the nursing and medical professions. Previously we had attempted to blame noncompliance on …

Involvement In Leisure Activities By Mental Health Center Clients And Non-Clients, David H. Roby Apr 1981

Involvement In Leisure Activities By Mental Health Center Clients And Non-Clients, David H. Roby

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A survey on the level and frequency of leisure activity in individuals getting clinical aid was compared with that of individuals not presently contemplating or receiving such help. The subjects, 26 females and 24 males in each group, responded to a questionnaire which requested information regarding demographics, and the rate (days per week), and duration (minutes per day), or participation in selected leisure activities. As was expected, based on Galsser's concept of Positive Addiction, the nonclinical group showed significantly more involvement in activities rated as possible Positive Addictions. No significant difference was found between groups on absolute numbers of leisure …

The Effects Of Individual Verbal Training Versus Group Verbal Training Upon Preschooler's Corresponding Snack Selection, John W. Hoedl Apr 1981

The Effects Of Individual Verbal Training Versus Group Verbal Training Upon Preschooler's Corresponding Snack Selection, John W. Hoedl

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare group correspondence training with individual correspondence training. Groups of individually-trained and group-trained preschoolers were observed for their selection of specific snack items (fruit). First, they were trained to say they would select fruit. Then, social reinforcers were used to attempt to reinforce correspondence. Next, tangible reinforcers were contingent upon correspondence. The Group-Trained Tangible Reinforcement Phase proved the most successful and was replicated across the other groups.

A Comparison Of Concurrent And Removed Component Procedures For Teaching Toothbrushing Skills To Preschoolers, Timothy Ian Mckinley Apr 1981

A Comparison Of Concurrent And Removed Component Procedures For Teaching Toothbrushing Skills To Preschoolers, Timothy Ian Mckinley

Masters Theses

The study compared the use of a removed component program to a concurrent training program in teaching toothbrushing skills to preschool children. The removed component program separated three response components from the terminal toothbrushing response and taught them separately out-of-the mouth before requiring them in the mouth. The concurrent training program required the three response components but did not train them separately in or out of the mouth. The removed component program taught the skills faster than or equal to the concurrent program, with a significantly higher percentage of correct responses.

The Relationship Between Physical Growth And Infant Behavioral Development In Rural Guatemala, Robert E. Lasky, Robert E. Klein, Charles Yarbrough, Patrice L. Engle, Aaron Lechtig, Reynaldo Martorell Mar 1981

The Relationship Between Physical Growth And Infant Behavioral Development In Rural Guatemala, Robert E. Lasky, Robert E. Klein, Charles Yarbrough, Patrice L. Engle, Aaron Lechtig, Reynaldo Martorell

Psychology and Child Development

The present study investigated the relationship between a number of anthropometric indices and behavioral development during the first 2 years of life in rural Guatemala. Length and weight were the indices most strongly correlated with behavioral development. If the effect of the infant's length and weight was statistically controlled for, none of the other anthropometric variables explained a significant proportion of the variance in behavioral development. Con- trolling for length (or weight) assessed at the same age as the behavioral assessment, length (or weight) for younger ages was not significantly correlated with behavioral development. Changes in length or weight over …

The Buller-Steer Syndrome, Richard Ulbrich Jan 1981

The Buller-Steer Syndrome, Richard Ulbrich

Ethology Collection

Bulling among steers is an abnormal behavioral trait and is a common health and economic problem in feedlot operations. Factors associated with the buller-steer syndrome are hormonal implantation, seasonality and environmental conditions, stress, overcrowding, and social interaction between individuals. Research has examined relationships between these and other factors and buller occurrence. Boredom of feedlot cattle may contribute to buller occurrence and other undesirable behavior more than we might suspect. Research is needed to determine the feasibility of enriching the environment of penned livestock in general, the goal of which would be, in theory, the elimination of undesirable behavior as well …

Equine Behavior Problems In Relation To Humane Management, Katherine A. Houpt Jan 1981

Equine Behavior Problems In Relation To Humane Management, Katherine A. Houpt

Equines Collection

The behavior problems of horses are frequently related to management practices. Behaviors that are termed stall vices appear to be either stereotyped behaviors that occur in reaction to stress, or patterns that emerge when natural behaviors such as grazing are prevented. The behavior cases presented to the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, were tabulated: 27% were stall vices and 27% were some form of aggression. The stall vices were circling, digging, kicking the stall, chewing wood, swallowing air or self-mutilation. Management of horses on pasture rather than in stalls prevents the development of many of these …

Self-Starvation Of Rats In Running Wheels As A Function Of Activity-Food Interval And Food Consistency, Ingrid Kalwas Stephens Oct 1980

Self-Starvation Of Rats In Running Wheels As A Function Of Activity-Food Interval And Food Consistency, Ingrid Kalwas Stephens

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Rats under restricted food schedules are generally capable of maintaining stable body weights by reducing energy output. However, if they are given access to running wheels, they fail to respond with this adaptive strategy. Instead, they show an increase in activity and a paradoxical decrease in caloric intake, leading to the development of stomach ulcers and death. Since food-yoked controls kept in standard cages remain ulcer-free and survive, the formation of stomach lesions appears to be due to the combination of increased energy expenditure and insufficient food intake. The present study attempted to attenuate this self-starvation effect by providing more …

Teaching Health-Related Behaviors To Young Children Through Social Skills Training, Mary Louise Stevens Aug 1980

Teaching Health-Related Behaviors To Young Children Through Social Skills Training, Mary Louise Stevens

Dissertations

Part I consisted of training four kindergarten subjects to make eye contact, assertive comments and assertive actions in reference to social and health-related situations. Training occurred on a one-to-one basis with an adult female and results were assessed with a multiple baseline design. Skill acquisition and maintenance were assessed by measuring ratio of eye contact to speech duration, assertive content and assertive actions on training scenes. Generalization of social skills was assessed by means of: (1) similar, but untrained scenes, (2) choice tests between products with and without sugar, (3) in vivo tests in the school and home environment, (4) …

A Review Of The Behavioural Mechanism Of Milk Ejection Of The Domestic Pig, David Fraser Jul 1980

A Review Of The Behavioural Mechanism Of Milk Ejection Of The Domestic Pig, David Fraser

Feeding Behavior Collection

The domestic pig has complex nursing and suckling behaviour, consisting of several distinct phases of suckling by the piglets and a characteristic pattern of grunting by the sow. A review of observations and experimental findings suggests cause-and-effect relationships between the different elements of sow and piglet behaviour, and the relationship of the behaviour to milk ejection. Characteristic features of pig nursing and suckling behaviour are interpreted as an adaptation promoting even distribution of milk among a number of precocious litter-mates.

Personal Responsibility In The Medical Treatment Of Cancer: The Role Of Counseling And Patient Understanding Of The Dynamics Of Disease, Evelyn Waterman

Theses

This thesis explores the role of personal responsibility, counseling, and holistic understanding in the medical treatment of cancer. Moving beyond the traditional medical model that focuses solely on physical symptoms and treatment modalities, the study emphasizes the psychosomatic dimensions of cancer—highlighting the interconnections between mind, body, spirit, and emotions in disease development and healing.

Using a personal case study methodology, the author recounts her own experience with a cancer diagnosis, illustrating how counseling became a transformative tool in confronting psychological and relational stressors that contributed to her physical symptoms. Through this journey, she argues for a redefinition of the "doctor-patient …

Masters Theses

Statement Of The Problem

There were two sets of problems which were of focal interest: (1) Did the achievement levels of the students selected come up a significant degree? (The administration wished a month's gain for a month's instruction.) (2) Did the children's personality and behavior characteristics change for the better?

Procedure

The design used was a one-group pretest-posttest design. Achievement, behavior, and personality traits were measured on the original sixteen children and in remaining ten who were still in the classes after two years.

Conclusions

As stated previously, the primary purposes of this descriptive research study were: (1) Did …

An Exploration Of Change In Teacher Concerns Over Time, Sharla E. Hutchinson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to reconsider the five factor structure of the Teach Concern Checklist (TCC) currently being utilized by the teacher Preparation Evaluation Program (TPEP) at Western Kentucky University. The problem was to replicate the three factor solution of the TCC proposed by George (1978) and to further explore the progression of teacher concerns with experience to lend support to the self-task-impact concern theory proposed by Fuller (1969)

Two hundred and sixty-five pre-service and in-service teacher participating in TPRP completed the TCC. These teachers represented the different experience levels of student. First, third and fifth year of …

Which Therapy?: An Analysis Of Value Judgments In Psychotherapy, David Shaw Sep 1979

Which Therapy?: An Analysis Of Value Judgments In Psychotherapy, David Shaw

Theses

  • The Problem: The author addresses the lack of systematic guidance for laypersons in selecting a psychotherapy model that aligns with their individual lifestyle, personality, and values.

  • The Method: The study utilizes a comparative analysis of Moral, Illness, Psychoanalytic, Behavioral/Learning, and Existential/Humanistic perspectives, incorporating literature from theorists like Freud, Rogers, and Wolpe alongside practicum experience at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute and the Growth Art Therapy Program.

  • Qualitative Finding: The analysis determines that effective therapy depends on the compatibility between the client's personal characteristics and the therapist's theoretical orientation, as evidenced by the author's observation that theoretically conflicting therapies can both be …

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand Jan 1979

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand

Theses

Marjorie L. Rand’s Theory and Practice of Integrated Psychotherapy explores a holistic approach to therapy that unifies the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Drawing from Gestalt therapy, Reichian therapy, movement therapy, breath awareness, and meditation, Rand presents a flexible and adaptive therapeutic model that prioritizes self-awareness and personal growth.

The thesis challenges the traditional medical and psychological models, which often treat the mind and body as separate entities. Instead, Rand argues for an integrative approach where energy flows freely, reducing psychological and physical distress. She discusses the role of energy healing, the chakra system, and bodywork as essential components of …

Psychology and Child Development

Data from a longitudinal study in progress were used to investigate the relationships between intellectual ability prior to schooling opportunities and characteristics of family and home environment, and elementary school attendance and performance in 3 rural Guatemalan communities. Pre-school- ing mental test performances, family SES level, and indices of parental values concerning education were all associated with attending or not attending school. Length of school attendance was predicted by pre-schooling mental test scores for girls and by family SES level and parental values for boys. Age at first enrollment was predicted by both pre-schooling mental test scores and family SES …

A Review Of The Behavioral Techniques For Weight Reduction And Control In Adults, Carol Kerr Hardee Jan 1978

A Review Of The Behavioral Techniques For Weight Reduction And Control In Adults, Carol Kerr Hardee

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Obesity has been an increasing health problem in the United States. In recent years, extensive research has been on the use of behavioral techniques for weight control. Although traditional methods of treatment have not proven to be long-term, some behavioral studies have indicated maintenance. Findings indicated that self-control methods are most effective when they are presented through therapist instruction, which is gradually faded. A full behavioral program for weight control would also include basic adjunct procedures, i.e., monitoring of calories or food, exercise, stimulus control, and social reinforcement, as well as major behavioral methods such as covert sensitization, contracting, bibliotherapy, …
