School Connectedness As A Mediator Between Poverty And Adolescent Mental Health, Paul Andrew Boissonneault
School Connectedness As A Mediator Between Poverty And Adolescent Mental Health, Paul Andrew Boissonneault
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents, and one third of adolescents experience significant mental health problems. When adolescents feel connected to school, they are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between poverty and adolescent mental health problems and explore the role of school connectedness on this relationship. Study participants were 31 middle school (Grades 6–8) adolescents in a rural area in central Florida. Self-report measures were used to assess mental health and level of school connectedness. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses tested the mediating effect of …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental assembly, currently comprising seven member states including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. This transcendental phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of counseling leaders and professionals in the EAC as they transitioned through the COVID-19 global pandemic. Grounded in Schlossberg’s transition theory, the study explored participants’ experiences as they moved into, moved through, and moved out of the pandemic in the period between January 2020 and May 2023. Triangulated, qualitative data, assessed through transcendental and heuristic methodology, was collected from 10 participants representing …

This study used a qualitative case study approach to examine teachers’ experiences returning to school following the COVID-19 pandemic and determine if mental health training for teachers to support student mental health would ease the return to school. The researcher recruited 12 Christian school teachers that taught in the classroom pre- and post-COVID-19. Inclusive criteria included teaching two years before the shutdown, teaching during the shutdown, returning to in-person teaching, and being at least 25 years old with no gaps in teaching between 2018-2022. All participants participated in a 30-45-minute audio-recorded, semi-structured, one-on-one interview in a discreet safe venue, such …
The Impact Of Social Dance Skills On The Development Of Employee Soft Skills, Danielle May Patridge
The Impact Of Social Dance Skills On The Development Of Employee Soft Skills, Danielle May Patridge
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Employee soft skills are necessary in nearly every occupation for both employee and organizational success. There is a considerable body of knowledge related to the development of employee soft skills, and soft skills training is now seen in some educational curricula and organizational training programs. Yet, employers continue to report that employees and candidates are either lacking in or have underdeveloped soft skills, hampering both worker and organizational success. Soft skills cross domains and are not confined to use in the workplace; hence, they can also be developed in non-work domains. In this qualitative study, accomplished social dancers described their …
Mental Toughness In The Workplace, Maiah E. Taylor
Mental Toughness In The Workplace, Maiah E. Taylor
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Within the realm of the modern work organization, the employers role on employees’ mental health has emerged as a critical factor concerning job attrition. Frequently, work organizations prioritize their productivity and output, rather than recognizing the importance of individual contributions as a reflection of their well-being. Research on workplace satisfaction and adversity management has failed to address the challenges that non-military or law enforcement populations face in retaining talent. Current research on mental toughness, resilience, and grit has overlooked the importance of civilian population training interventions, leaving a gap in the literature. This mixed-method study used an explanatory sequential design, …

Secure Attachment Styles And Depression In Adolescents With Co-Rumination As A Moderator, Kimberly Murray
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression among adolescents has increased over the years and can affect development and potentially lead to substance abuse, self-injurious behavior, and suicide. Adolescents with secure attachments to parents have been found to have fewer symptoms of depression. Co-rumination with friends has shown to be related to positive quality in friendships due to self-disclosure between friends; however, co-rumination also is related to an increase in depression. The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine whether adolescent’s attachment style with parents is associated with depression and whether this association is moderated by co-rumination with friends. The theories that were used to …

The study was comprised of 10 women who became a mother with their first child within the last seven years of the study's initiation while holding a faculty position in academia that included teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities …
The Exploration Of Latino Bip Participants' Experiences Of Oppression And Expressions Of Critical Consciousness, Adrian Luis Manriquez
The Exploration Of Latino Bip Participants' Experiences Of Oppression And Expressions Of Critical Consciousness, Adrian Luis Manriquez
Dissertations and Theses
According to Freire (1970), individuals and groups who are systemically oppressed in society often develop and struggle with a sense of internalized oppression, and those who fail to address their own oppression will likely engage in the oppression of others. Conceivably, this is the state of affairs for Latino males who perpetrate intimate partner violence (IPV). However, Latinos who use IPV behaviors are often viewed solely as "villains" or oppressors (Corvo & Johnson, 2003), omitting the various contexts in which this subgroup of males might be subjected to oppressive conditions outside of their intimate relationships. This contributes to an absence …

This Program is among the first to use the Community Initiated Care (CIC) model in the US and is aimed at building community resilience and the capacity for communities to provide mental health support, particularly among those disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Our objective is to share our methods for costing a program targeting 10 zip codes that …
The Effects Of Classroom Integration On Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Makena Johnson
The Effects Of Classroom Integration On Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Makena Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Inclusion refers to the practice of fully educating students with special learning and/or behavioral needs within the traditional classroom. Such students participate in age-appropriate classes for the entirety of the school day, integrating them into the general school program with the intent to foster successful academic and social outcomes. Because inclusion is often driven by the desire to promote social integration, disorders that involve social dysfunction may be associated with additional challenges that hamper any potential inclusive benefits. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one such candidate. This literature review aims to integrate research exploring the impact of separating or including …
Animals In Prison: Is There Value In Inmate-Animal Rehabilitation Programs?, I. H. C.
Animals In Prison: Is There Value In Inmate-Animal Rehabilitation Programs?, I. H. C.
Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research
This paper demonstrates the benefits of animal rehabilitation programs in alleviating the mental harm of incarceration and improving outcomes for individuals upon their release. I.H.C. details the overwhelming mental health crises and conditions that inmates face in prison, arguing to redefine rehabilitation to center both practical preparations and on healing the underlying traumas and mental health concerns before release. His numerous examples drawn from prisons around the world thoroughly uphold the evidence that animal rehabilitation programs improve inmate wellbeing, decrease violent incidents in prison, enhance vocational and employment opportunities post-incarceration, and overall change inmates’ behavior – all benefits that ultimately …

Climate Grief And Dance Movement Therapy: A Literature Review, Elisabeth Lovin
Climate Grief And Dance Movement Therapy: A Literature Review, Elisabeth Lovin
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Research is starting to focus on the effects of climate change on mental health, especially future-oriented anxieties and uncertainty about our planet’s liveability. Less commonly discussed are feelings of grief for the climate-related losses we have already sustained. This thesis organizes current literature about climate grief and data about the psychosomatic effects of climate-related losses and examines general grief counseling research, as well as presenting applications of dance movement therapy for grief and loss. Cultural and historical gestures and movements of grieving bodies and portrayals of grief in dance history support the proposal that dance movement therapists are capable of …
The Archeology Of Adoption: Tracing The Journey From Birth Through Adoption Using Pre-Adoptive Artifacts, Ellen Reeve
The Archeology Of Adoption: Tracing The Journey From Birth Through Adoption Using Pre-Adoptive Artifacts, Ellen Reeve
Educational Studies Dissertations
Adults adopted in childhood often face a heightened susceptibility to psychological and behavioral challenges compared with their non-adopted peers. Scholars examining this phenomenon associate various factors, including an adoptee’s sense of self as an individual within a complex adoption background. This qualitative study utilized a material engagement theory to explore birth through adoptive narratives among adults adopted in closed settings during childhood. Through participatory research, participants examined a range of artifacts related to maternal relinquishment, encompassing foster and adoption records, original birth certificates, letters, photographs, birthmarks, clothing, hair, scars, and DNA test results. The study focused on understanding these artifacts’ …

Grief Like Mine: A Literature Review Exploring Culturally Informed Grief Work For Black Youth Using Dance/Movement Therapy, Darrell Hyche
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Black American youth are exposed to more death related circumstances than their peers yet are severely underrepresented in literature focused on the broader scope of children’s bereavement. More research and analysis are required to develop and implement culturally relevant interventions as they embark on their grief journey. Dance/movement therapy has the capacity for providing support that is culturally specific and able to meet the developmental levels of children, yet its grief focus work is limited. This literature review aims to bridge the gap between Black grief and dance/movement therapy as a culturally informed practice. An analysis of various forms of …
A Trauma-Informed Socially Just Approach To Working With Juvenile Justice-Involved Youth Utilizing Expressive Arts Therapy, Ciara Carr
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Youth involved with the juvenile justice system often have a history of trauma and oppression resulting from their positionality and circumstances. Most juvenile justice-involved youth are boys, youth of color, low-income, LGBTQIA2S+, disabled, and traumatized. This literature review explores the history of the juvenile justice system, issues with the present-day model, and trauma-informed and transformative justice approaches to practice. The implementation of socially just, trauma-informed expressive arts therapy programs is proposed as a more equitable practice to replace commonly used punitive practices across the United States. More research is needed to understand the impact of such programs on this population …

The Role Of The Wounded Healer In Expressive Art Therapy: A Literature Review, Yu-Tzu Lin
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Experiencing traumatic events can have a profound impact on individuals, ranging from mild distress to severe symptoms. Trauma is prevalent, and there are numerous studies on potential treatments. However, it is surprising that there is a lack of research on how therapists' own trauma background affects their work with clients and the therapeutic relationship. This literature review examines the intersection of trauma, therapy, and the concept of the "wounded healer," particularly within the context of expressive art therapy. This study discusses how expressive art therapists' personal experiences with trauma can influence their therapeutic approaches. It examines the potential benefits and …

Regulation Through Rhythm: A Literature Review On Dance/Movement Therapy Approaches To Facilitating Nervous System Regulation, Elizabeth Barbera
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Abstract
The mental health field has started to pay attention to how trauma plays into a person’s overall mental and physical well-being. Because of this more research has shown the connection between mind and body. Yet the clinical implications and literature on theories of how to treat trauma and trauma related disorders do not always connect. This review of literature seeks to analyze the literature on Porges’, Polyvagal Theory and Amighi’s, Kestenberg Movement Profiles. An investigation of the current literature makes a connection between the phylogenetic order of both the nervous system and developmental movement. Considerations of how trauma, in …

struggling with substance abuse often have complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and seek altered states beyond the mundane via substances. What if expressive art therapies and ancient spiritual practices creating trance states could meet this need to alter states, while healing CPTSD symptoms by developing self-awareness, affect regulation, and reprogramming the subconscious mind through imaginal realm parts work? This capstone thesis explores this using yogic philosophy, shamanic drumming, Himalayan singing bowls, aboriginal grief rituals, and expressive art therapies rooted in transcendental theater, bilateral stimulation, and natural materials like clay therapy. A methodology combining ancient wisdom, arts, and modern psychological theory …
Creative Resilience Against Racism Among Asian Americans: Development Of A Method, Janice Chen
Creative Resilience Against Racism Among Asian Americans: Development Of A Method, Janice Chen
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The experience of racism is inevitable and can become internalized when racism is persistent. As an Asian American woman, I am interested in exploring how art can be used as a form of resilience against internalized racism among Asian Americans. Racism against Asian Americans and recent immigrants from Asia has always existed throughout the history of the United States. Systematic laws, institutional policies, and cultural norms have set rules and narratives to put Asian Americans at a disadvantage. In addition, Asian Americans may have difficulty opening the conversation about racism. Internalized racism can cause physical and mental harm. I used …
Exploring The Literature On Art Therapy Interventions In Mitigating The Negative Effects Of Loneliness In College Students, Molly Hoekman
Exploring The Literature On Art Therapy Interventions In Mitigating The Negative Effects Of Loneliness In College Students, Molly Hoekman
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Experiences of loneliness and social isolation among college students pose a concern for emerging adults’ mental and physical health, as well as greater impacts on university systems across the country. While social isolation and loneliness are subjective experiences, there are a range of factors rooted in developmental psychology and sociocultural theory that influence the rising rates and acuity of loneliness. Attachment theorists posit that secure attachment early in life can impact how individuals make lasting interpersonal connections long after their childhood. Secure and insecure attachment styles combined with the dramatic transition to college for a young adult are influencing factors …
Embodied Co-Regulation: A Neuroregulatory-Informed Dance/Movement Therapy Transition Intervention Method For Arousal Regulation For Adolescents In A Partial Hospitalization Program, Anamaria Guzman
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis introduces a novel Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) approach, focusing on nervous system arousal regulation during transitions between therapy groups. The core of the method involves a brief 5-minute exercise designed to modulate arousal levels, encompassing alertness and energy, aiming to establish a baseline homeostasis. Rooted in Polyvagal Theory and Developmental Neurobiology, the approach assumes the co-regulation of nervous systems within a group therapeutic setting. Two primary outcomes are self-assessed: 1) somatic experiences documented through narratives and 2) nervous system biodata measured using the Flowtime headband monitoring of brainwaves, heart rate, and other biomarkers. Results indicated that all six sessions …
