Risk-Taking Propensity In Relation To The Choice Of Vasectomy As A Preferred Method Of Contraception, Kathleen Hines
Risk-Taking Propensity In Relation To The Choice Of Vasectomy As A Preferred Method Of Contraception, Kathleen Hines
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present study investigated the possible relationship between the degree of risk-taking propensity and the choice of vasectomy as a preferred method of birth control. Three sample groups, vasectomy seeking men, their wives, and men using contraceptive measures other than permanent sterilization, were tested for degree of risk-taking. The instrument used to measure risk-taking propensity was The Desire For Certainty Test (Brim, 1955). In addition, selected demographic variables were analyzed for the two groups of males to assure a relatively greater degree of homogenietv among these two male sample groups. A Dunnett's Test was used to assess the difference between …

"Project Dial": An Early Childhood Screening Program, Lewis S. Sarff
Masters Theses
This field study addressed the problem of "actively seeking" out and identifying children (ages 3 to 5 years) likely to develop late learning problems upon school enrollment. The procedures developed and reported in this paper deal with initial public relations, facilities, personnel, an evaluation instrument Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL), hearing and vision testing, and reporting of results to parents and school personnel.
The paper also includes means and standard deviations for DIAL subtest scores by one year age groups and by sex, as well as simple and multiple r's for each of the DIAL variables individually …

The Social History Delinquency Scale, Mary A. Byrne
Masters Theses
Twenty four delinquents from Coles County, Ill. and twenty four non-delinquents were given the Social History Questionnaire (Best and Ericksen, 1973). The two groups were matched on age, sex, and self-reported social status. An item analysis was performed and the questions which differentiated between the delinquents and the nondelinquents were identified. A delinquency subscale was then developed from the 54 significant questions.
The Social History Questionnaire In Relation To Suicide Risk Potential, Edward Ward
The Social History Questionnaire In Relation To Suicide Risk Potential, Edward Ward
Masters Theses
The study of suicide is the study of individuals, each of whom can be considered a unique entity. However, in the course of studying suicide case histories, some demographic variables seem to repeat themselves as differentiating potential suicides from persons who will never attempt or commit suicide. The purpose of this paper is to determine which social history variables correlate significantly with subjects who have made a definite suicide attempt or gesture.
The basic question raised by this thesis was: What factors in a person's social history correlate significantly to an increased probability of having made a suicide attempt or …

Recent Role Changes Made By Women And The Effect These Changes Have Had On Marital Adjustment, Nancy L. Scolar
Dissertations and Theses
Sex Roles, A History. From Insects to humans, gender is associated with specific behavior. Below the mammals there are sex differences in dominance that are correlated with androgen function on the inside, and with certain types of stimulation on the outside. In higher forms, the increasing complexity of brain development means increasing capacity for modification through experience and learned modes of adaptation to the environment.
By the time the primate level is reached, social influences have become so intricate and compelling as to clearly foreshadow culture.
According to Elizabeth Janeway in her article Reflections on the History of Women, in …

A Study Of The Onset, Severity And Frequency Of Illness As Related To Life Changes And Coping Mechanisms, Lynne Susan Dubblestyne
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
A study which investigated the relationships between the onset, frequency and severity of past and present illnesses, with life changes and coping mechanisms was carried out. Subjects consisted of three levels of health care: (1) symptom-free (N=88); (2) minor illness (N=72), and (3) hospital patients (N=100). Three measures were employed to test these relationships: (1) the Schedule of Recent Experience (SRE); (2) the Medical History Check-List (MHCL) and, (3) the Boston University Personality Inventory (BUPI). In addition, Seriousness of Illness Rating Scale (SIRS) mean values or severity weights were assigned to subjects’ physician diagnosed illnesses.
As expected, the amount of …

Community Corrections, Judith Ursula Mary Gedye
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Troubled and troubling youth have been the focus of interest for generations of mankind. Modern society has chosen to deal with its “delinquent” youth in characteristically alienating ways. This thesis looks in depth at the development of community psychology, the history of the juvenile court system and corrections, the literature of troubled and troubling youth, and the history of the community of Kitchener-Waterloo in an effort to understand the current situation for youth in our culture. Theintent of the thesis was to develop a Group Home Committee which would focus the interest and energy of some members of a community …
Personality Factors And Operant Heart Rate Conditioning, Jerry M. Malkiewicz
Personality Factors And Operant Heart Rate Conditioning, Jerry M. Malkiewicz
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The present study was concerned with certain individual differences that relate to a subject’s ability to increase his heart rate on command when given appropriate external feedback. The main purpose was to extend to the operant conditioning paradigm Eysenck’s theory that introverts classically condition more readily than extraverts. A second purpose was to determine which personality factors—extraversion, anxiety, and ability to perceive autonomic responses—contribute to heart rate control in operant conditioning. The Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Autonomic Perception Questionnaire were administered to 46 undergraduate males who attempted to accelerate their heart rates, with visual proportional feedback provided, during 20, …

The moral judgment interview included four hypothetical moral dilemmas and a standard set of probing questions. Three of the dilemmas were standard …
The Social History Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Therapeutic Outcome, Susan E. Suter
The Social History Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Therapeutic Outcome, Susan E. Suter
Masters Theses
One of the most critical problems encountered in clinical practice concerns the outcome criteria used for predicting therapeutic improvement. At present, there is no single outcome criteria that is universally accepted as evidence of improvement. Representative studies by Lubarsky et al (1971) have emphasized the magnitude of this problem by citing the many patient variables that may effect the outcome of a therapeutic relationship.
The importance of this therapeutic relationship in terms of time and committment on the part of both the therapist and the client, necessitates some objective means for first, the development of an instrument that can measure …

An Investigation Of The Behavioral Effects Of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride On Schedule-Induced Polydipsia In Rats, Linda Sederquist Smith
Masters Theses
The influence of methylphenidate hydrochloride injections on six male Charles River rats displaying schedule induced polydipsia was examined in this study. Bar pressing, licking, and water consumption were measured during a total of 63 daily one hour trials conducted with a variable interval 60-second schedule of bar pressing for pellets with water constantly available. The polydipsic response was acquired by subjects during the first 28 trials. Subjects were then divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental subjects recieved a 1 mg/kg injection of methylphenidate prior to regular trials 29-49 and extinction trials 50-63. Control subjects were injected with a …
An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Differential Diagnosis In A Rural Mental Health Center, Kathryn Dunscomb
An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Differential Diagnosis In A Rural Mental Health Center, Kathryn Dunscomb
Masters Theses
The review of the literature discussed loneliness in general and specified three seperate forms of loneliness; social, psychic, and existential. The relationships between loneliness, social interaction, and pathology were discussed. 139 clients were given the Belcher Extended Loneliness Scale - Revised prior to therapy. They were assigned one of six diagnostic categories to determine loneliness score (LS), diagnostic, and sex interactions. An analysis of variance found a significant difference (p <.0001) between the diagnostic categories’ LS. The schizophrenic’s and the neurotic’s LS s were significantly higher (<.05) than the remaining categories. The males had significantly (p <.036) higher LS than the females. It was also hypothesized that the degree of loneliness would increase the lower the diagnostic developmental level. The hypothesized order was not consistent with the results. Further research was recommended.
