The Use Of The Delphi Technique To Effect Decisions Concerning The College Level Examination Program By Higher Education Representatives, Terry Joseph Orme May 1976

The Use Of The Delphi Technique To Effect Decisions Concerning The College Level Examination Program By Higher Education Representatives, Terry Joseph Orme

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the use of the Delphi technique in educational decision making.

Utah State institutions of higher education employ the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) to award credit in lieu of course work. However, since no uniform policies existed among them, 145 persons were selected on a representative basis to recommend a norming group to use for performance comparisons, the standard by which to judge CLEP performance, and the levels for maximum and minimum credit.

The Delphi technique, which employs a round-by-round questionnaire with feedback procedure, was used for six rounds to obtain sufficient consensus on the three aforementioned …

The Persistence Of Negative Intra-List Cueing Effects, Charles R. Grah Apr 1976

The Persistence Of Negative Intra-List Cueing Effects, Charles R. Grah

Psychology ETDs

This thesis discriminates between two hypotheses which have been proposed to account for the recall decrement frequently produced by recall cues when the cues are selected from the study list (intra-list cues). One hypothesis suggests that the recall decrement is produced by changes in the relative strengths of words in memory. The other hypothesis suggests that the recall decrement results from additional recall requirements that are placed upon the subject when recall is cued with intra-list cues. These hypotheses make different predictions about the persistence of the recall decrement. The first hypothesis predicts that the recall decrement should persist when …

The Effect Of Reinforcers On The Verbal Behavior Of Headstart Children, Deloris Floyd Apr 1976

The Effect Of Reinforcers On The Verbal Behavior Of Headstart Children, Deloris Floyd

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study attempted to assess the effect of a speech contingency reinforcement, administered by an interacting adult, to increase the number of word units uttered during test administration. More specifically, the experiment attempted to see if lower class children when given a reinforcer would take more time in giving elaborated and scorable responses on specific items, thereby raising their score on those items. Their performance was compared to lower class children who were not given the reinforcer. Fifty children from the Warren County 1973 summer Headstart program were used as subjects. The treatment conditions included a control group given no …

Mixed Cs₁-Cs₂ Interval Effects On Sensory Preconditioning With Rats, V. Alan Spiker Mar 1976

Mixed Cs₁-Cs₂ Interval Effects On Sensory Preconditioning With Rats, V. Alan Spiker

Psychology ETDs

Previous within-subject manipulations of the CS-US interval (ISI) in classical conditioning have shown that if two ISIs are randomly presented, conditioning rates will be directly related to the proportion of trials during which the more optimal ISI is presented. The present study was designed to extend this finding to sensory preconditioning (SPC). Ten groups of rats were trained to bar press on a VariableInterval 30 sec. schedule prior to the introduction of a three phase SPC paradigm. The first phase consisted of 16 pairings of light and tone, while Phase 2 established a conditioned emotional response to the tone through …

An Exploratory Study Of Runaway Female Adolescents In A Residential Treatment Center, Mary E. Cook, Stan Jasper Mar 1976

An Exploratory Study Of Runaway Female Adolescents In A Residential Treatment Center, Mary E. Cook, Stan Jasper

Dissertations and Theses

If correctional institutions are to function according to established criteria, that is, to "correct" the deviant behavior of juvenile delinquents, then one obvious requirement is to have continuous contact with that individual over a period of time. This research project is one attempt to study runaways from the juvenile delinquent girls institution. This study specifically focuses on what factors influence a girl to run away and what factors encourage her to stay at Villa St. Rose.

Both researchers discovered in working at Villa St. Rose that one the biggest obstacles for the treatment program was the number of runaways that …

A Test Of Conservation For Continuous And Discontinuous Quantity In The Very Young Child, Nancy Patrick Kaye Feb 1976

A Test Of Conservation For Continuous And Discontinuous Quantity In The Very Young Child, Nancy Patrick Kaye

Dissertations and Theses

The development of mathematical concepts in children has been studied by many researchers. Much of this research has focused on the concept of conservation which was introduced by Piaget. It has generally been assumed that children under the age of five years are not capable of such conservation. Some recent evidence suggests that children Wlder this age do conserve on particular tasks. In this study one hundred children from age two years four months to three years seven months were tested for conservation of discontinuous and continuous quantity. Although some evidence of conservation in this age range was obtained, no …

The first group deals with science, especially the area of health care, one of the more practical applications of science in the modern age. The second group consists of three papers done for honor courses in which the major purpose was to expose the student to new areas of consciousness and have them respond orally and verbally to what they read, creative writing. The last group deals with the humanities, literature and religion, two of the more popular fields of the humanities today. …

Effects Of Attitude Toward Women In Management And Applicant Information On A Male And Female Applicant For A Management Position, Arlette Ada Steinberger Jan 1976

Effects Of Attitude Toward Women In Management And Applicant Information On A Male And Female Applicant For A Management Position, Arlette Ada Steinberger

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An in-basket exercise was used to investigate the effects of sex-role stereotypes on selection evaluations of applicants for a management position. The independent variables consisted of (a) sex of the applicant (e.g. Janet N. Davis, James N. Davis) (b) the raters attitude toward women in management positions as measured by a questionnaire, and finally (c) the quality of information (e.g. biographical or behavioral). On the basis of information provided, 28 male and female subjects evaluated the applicants performance potential and suitability for a particular management position. The results confirmed the hypothesis that attitude toward women in management creates a discriminatory …

A Comparison Of Low And Middle Socio-Economic Status Blacks On Two Measures Of Intelligence, Anthony Young Jan 1976

A Comparison Of Low And Middle Socio-Economic Status Blacks On Two Measures Of Intelligence, Anthony Young

Masters Theses

The testing of persons with highly dissimilar cultural backrounds has received increasing attention since mid-century. In America, the practical problems of cross-cultural testing has been chiefly associated with subcultures or minority cultures within the dominate culture. Havinghurst (1951), in citing cultural differences which may affect intelligence performance named social class among the major types of culture in the U.S. A review of the literature revealed that research is close to unanimous in showing that there are significant differences in intelligence performance of children and youth from different socio-economic backrounds. These findings revealed that children of higher socio-economic status (SES) levels …

The Effects Of Crowding, Density, And The Duration Of Each On Learning, Richard A. Neetz Jan 1976

The Effects Of Crowding, Density, And The Duration Of Each On Learning, Richard A. Neetz

Masters Theses

Ninety-six male albino rats were housed from weaning in groups of 4, 8, or 16 animals. For all group sizes, animals were housed either in cages of a constant size (crowding) or in cages with floor space proportional to group size (density). Six animals from each of these conditions were tested for learning after either 55 or 109 days on a straight alley, a Lashley III maze, and a Y-maze. On the straight alley, no significant differences in running speed were found between durations, crowding and density, or group size. A significant trials effect was obtained (F=63.28, df=15/900, p < .01). On the Lashley III, a significant trials effect was obtained for running speed (F=102.27, df=8/480, p < .01) and errors (F=63.80, df=8/480, p < .01). The duration comparison showed the 55 day group making significantly more errors than the 109 day group (F=5.36, df=1/60, p < .05). No significant differences were found on running speed or errors between crowding and density or group size. On the Y-maze, the 55 day group had significantly more avoidances than the 109 day group (F=6.47, df=1/60, p < .05). …

School Morale And Self-Esteem Involving Adolescents With Learning Disabilities, Ted E. Barrett Jan 1976

School Morale And Self-Esteem Involving Adolescents With Learning Disabilities, Ted E. Barrett

Master's Theses

A student's cognitive achievement may be facilitated or repressed by various elements that constitute his affective character; his feelings, attitudes, and expectations form a substantial relationship with achievement. Rather than limiting themselves to evaluating those cognitive areas that relate with various measures of achievement, the administrators and staff members at the New Community School (NCS) have specified a desire to investigate and measure both the attitudes toward school and the self held by their attending students. Within the domain of educational evaluation, greater significance is being accorded to the students' values, interests, and attitudes(Lockwood 1973). In keeping with such considerations, …

The primary purpose of this study is to examine, in a controlled experimental situation, two variables that might have an effect upon the viewer's perception of a message film. One variable that can be expected to affect perception is the viewer's prior knowledge of the film. This study deals with one specific variable - a published review. Another variable that might affect perception is personality. This study deals with one identified personality type - authoritarian. The message film is the award-winning, five-minute, color, anti-war film, Star Spangled Banner. It was produced and directed by Roger Flint and was released in …

Application Of Reinforcement-Sampling Procedures With Formermental Patients In A Community Setting, Brett J. Dickinson Jan 1976

Application Of Reinforcement-Sampling Procedures With Formermental Patients In A Community Setting, Brett J. Dickinson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Prompts and instructions and reinforcer-sampling procedures were used in an attempt to increase recreational activity attendance of eight former mental patients in a community setting. A multiple baseline design with a reversal component was used to assess the effectiveness of the procedures. Data indicated that there was no increase in the time subjects spent outside of their residential facility, or in the number of recreational activities they attended in the community. There was an increase in the variety of the activities attended, but this increase was not maintained. Future research suggestions for increasing activity attendance are offered, including the effects …

Changes In Same-Different Laterality Patterns As A Function Of Practice And Stimulus Quality, Joseph B. Hellige Jan 1976

Changes In Same-Different Laterality Patterns As A Function Of Practice And Stimulus Quality, Joseph B. Hellige

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Accuracy and reaction time (RT) of judgments about sameness vs. difference of (a) names of two letters and (b) shapes of two nonverbal forms were examined for stimuli presented to the center, left (LVF), and right (RVF) visual fields. For same-name letter pairs during Experiment I, responses were more accurate and faster for LVF than for RVF trials on an initial 90-trial block, but this difference was reversed by a third 90-trial block. The RVF advantage for RT was maintained over Trial Blocks 4 and 5, given during a second session, but had disappeared on Trial Blocks 6 through 9 …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Adolescents' Knowledge Of Laws And Their Attitudes Towards The Police, Barbara Mccallum Jan 1976

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Adolescents' Knowledge Of Laws And Their Attitudes Towards The Police, Barbara Mccallum

Dissertations and Theses

Crime in the United States has risen at an alarming rate in the last few years and along with it, juvenile crime and delinquency. Society has had a difficult task trying to deal with this increased juvenile crime. Whereas the destructive, antisocial adult can be placed in prison or jail away from society, we are generally reluctant to institutionalize youth in such a manner. Rather, the feeling is that there is still hope for teenagers who commit crimes, that the community rather than institutions can and should be primarily responsible for trying to prevent and/or rehabilitate delinquents.

In the fall …

Mental Illness Among Chinese In The United States: Myth Or Reality?, Alex C. N. Leung Jan 1976

Mental Illness Among Chinese In The United States: Myth Or Reality?, Alex C. N. Leung

Dissertations and Theses

Several mental health professionals have suggested that Chinese in the United States as a group are less subject to mental disorders than other races. Whereas other investigators have also indicated that due to the influences of cultural conflict and racism, Chinese in the United States are under greater emotional distress than members of the host society. When stress from these sources becomes too great, mental health problems are frequently the result.

The purpose of this library research thesis is to review the available research works related with Chinese Americans mental health problems in the hope of seeking answers to the …

A Validity Study Of Select Symbol-Referent Relationships Using Semantic Differential Ratings, Stephen Willard Jan 1976

A Validity Study Of Select Symbol-Referent Relationships Using Semantic Differential Ratings, Stephen Willard

Dissertations and Theses

The present research was conducted in order to develop a method useful for measuring the meaning of symbolic material. Using this method an investigation was conducted to test the validity of several personality theories which ascribe meanings to select symbols.

A summary of the major personality theories dealing with symbolic material was conducted . Each theory was briefly presented with a discussion of the methods employed to determine the meanings of symbols. A set of symbol theory considerations was presented which would suggest the necessary components of an objective investigation attempting to be a validity test of symbol meanings predictions.

Establishing Imitative Behavior And Stimulus Control In Retarded Children Using Peer Trainers, Judith A. Viventi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two severely retarded children were trained to serve as imitative learning trainers for two profoundly retarded children. Initially, one trainer reinforced the correct imitations of one trainee but not the other. A second trainer reinforced the correct imitations of a second trainee but not the first trainee. A multiple baseline _comparison revealed that initial training produced high rates of imitative responding to both the reinforcing and non-reinforcing trainers. .Generalization of initiative responding to both trainers in a new setting was also demonstrated. Stimulus control of imitative responding was achieved when the reinforcing and non-reinforcing trainers for each trainee reversed those …

The California Psychological Inventory As Related To Dormitory Counselor Success, Mark Allen Fulmer Jan 1976

The California Psychological Inventory As Related To Dormitory Counselor Success, Mark Allen Fulmer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Effective methods of selecting dormitory counselors are needed. Evaluation of such a selection process calls for determining if the selection procedure employed is sorting the applicant pool effectively and if the procedure is successful in distinguishing students who will be the most successful dormitory counselors. Are those selected as dormitory counselors better than those rejected in the selection procedure?

Does a selection procedure for dormitory counselors which utilizes individual and group interviews effectively discriminate against the most successful dormitory counselors available in the applicant pool? Counselor success was to have been distinguished through the use of a profile of successful …
