Anticholinesterase Action And Electroconvulsive Shock-Induced Disruption Of Taste-Illness Association, Terry J. Debriere Jun 1973

Anticholinesterase Action And Electroconvulsive Shock-Induced Disruption Of Taste-Illness Association, Terry J. Debriere

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Electroconvulsive shock (ECS) interpolated temporally between the pairing of a novel taste and an induced gustatory illness prevents the taste from being associated with the illness (Kral, 1971). Physostigmine has been shown to protect against retrograde amnesic effects of ECS on learning of a passive avoidance task (Davis, Thomas, and Adams, 1971). Physostigmine protection of ECS induced disruption of a conditioned taste aversion was investigated using a 2 (physostigmine vs. saline) x 2 (ECS vs. sham shock) x 2 (conditioned vs. nonconditioned) x 2 (conditioning day vs. test day) factorial design with repeated measures over the last factor. Results indicated …

Rehearsal Of The Incorrect Response In Frequency Discrimination, Russel L. Smith Jun 1973

Rehearsal Of The Incorrect Response In Frequency Discrimination, Russel L. Smith

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The frequency theory of V-D learning states that the difference in frequency of occurrence of the correct and incorrect items serves as a cue to Ss; the Ss make their choice based on the relative frequency of the items. The present study consisted of a transfer task with a 2x3 factoral design; on the first task, one half of the Ss learned a list in which the correct items were changed each trial (CC), while one half learned a standard V-D list. On the second task, one third of the CC group learned a list in which high frequency items …

Developmental And Task Variables In Retention And Transfer From Discovery And Verbal Reception Learning, Evelyn W. Francis May 1973

Developmental And Task Variables In Retention And Transfer From Discovery And Verbal Reception Learning, Evelyn W. Francis

Psychology ETDs

The acquisition, retention and transfer performance of Ss following different methods of instruction were investigated as a function or the chronological age of the learner and task difficulty. The discovery method, in which Ss learned a conceptual rule through examples and feedback, was contrasted with the verbal reception method, in which Ss were provided with a verbal statement of the rule. Forty-eight Ss selected on the basis of age, 5.5 - 7.5, 7.5 - 9.5, and 10.5 - 11.5 years old, were taught a conceptual rule by the verbal reception or discovery method. Ss learned either a conjunctive or a …

Verbal Conflict Resolution As Related To The Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey And The Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale, Douglass R. Bloomfield May 1973

Verbal Conflict Resolution As Related To The Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey And The Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale, Douglass R. Bloomfield

Master's Theses

Eleven Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey Scale scores and the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale scores of 80 Ss were related in four multiple regression equations to average resolution times of Approach-Approach, Avoidance-Avoidance, Double Approach-Avoidance Verbal Conflicts and an average time of all conflict types. The four multiple correlations, however, were not significant. Females displayed significantly shorter times for Double Approach-Avoidance resolution than males. No significant sex differences were found for Approach-Approach or Avoidance-Avoidance conflict type resolution.

Low drive Ss as defined by the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale did not significantly differ in times to resolve all conflict types compared to hig.h drive …

The Effect Of Functional Cecotomy On Food And Water Intake In The Rat, Stephen P. Farr May 1973

The Effect Of Functional Cecotomy On Food And Water Intake In The Rat, Stephen P. Farr

Master's Theses

The effect of functional ceco tomy on ingestion and excretory behavior in the rat was viewed as a short term (ST) and long term (LT) stress adjustment. Findings in bo th ST and LT conditio ns were discussed in terms of the Mayerian parameters of precision, rapidity, sensitivity, and reliability. Under functional cecotomy water intake, fecal moisture content and dry fecal weight increased. Food intake remained constant. Stress adjustment in terms of the 4 parameters of ST and LT regulation were discussed as correlations and their accompanying standard errors over daily, 3-day, and 7-day time intervals. The standard error s …

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler May 1973

Personality Correlates Of Interpersonal Perception In A Residential Treatment Center For Adolescent Girls, Raymond Paul Micciche, Terrell Lynn Eheler

Dissertations and Theses

While men do indeed construct self-validating and often peculiar interpretations of the realities of their world the simple fact that these views become consensually shared doctrines of experience does not protect them from the revisionism of historical scrutiny. These perceptions of the world become retrospectively altered as developing bodies of knowledge reject them as being clearly deceptive or anachronistic. The concept of psychopathology, distinguished historically under many rubrics, has not been immune to these same processes of modification, nor has it ever been free of the diverse irrationalities which men of all ages have constructed to explain the etiology and …

A Cross-Class Survey Of Synaesthesia In High School Students And Its Biocultural Implications, Ina Jane Wundram May 1973

A Cross-Class Survey Of Synaesthesia In High School Students And Its Biocultural Implications, Ina Jane Wundram

Dissertations and Theses

It has been suggested in the literature that Synaesthesia, as an expression of syncretic thought, would be more common in non-Western than in Western cultures. Given the lack of availability of widely divergent cultural groups and the general lack of knowledge about the phenomenon, it was decided to study the possibility that synaesthesia in our society might be related to socio-economic class. A group of high school students from a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds was studied, and the results suggest that the occurrence of synaesthesia is not related to class. In addition, it was found that 50% of the …

A Correlation Study Between The Shipley-Hartford Test Of Mental Maturity And The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Richard Roy Speechly May 1973

A Correlation Study Between The Shipley-Hartford Test Of Mental Maturity And The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Richard Roy Speechly

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) has been v recognized as a helpful tool to the psychologist in identifying abnormal characteristics (Leverenz, 1956; Modlin, 1956; Hathaway and Mckinley, 1967; Hock, 1970). Likewise the Shipley-Institute of Living Scale for Measuring Intellectual Impairment (S-H) has also been recognized as a helpful tool in identifying emotional impairment (Pollack, 1942; Halstead, 1943; Fleming, 1943; Wright, 1946; Garfield and Fey, 1948; Lewinsohn, 1963) . Despite the research which suggests both tests are capable of helpful diagnosis in the general area of psychological impairment (Welch, 1956; Lewinsohn, 1963), little if any work has been done examining …

Increasing Resistance To The Negative Effects Of Set, Paul B. Chance May 1973

Increasing Resistance To The Negative Effects Of Set, Paul B. Chance

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two experimental studies were reported in which attempts were made to increase resistance to the negative effects of set. Set interference was measured by performance on 1) a task in which a set was experimentally induced, 2) a series of problems presumed to involve implicit sets, and 3) a test of creativity presumed to involve implicit sets.

The experimental treatments consisted of tasks which required set-breaking. An important aspect of this research was that no hints or instructions concerning sets were provided.

The findings offer modest support for the view that learning experiences can be designed which will increase resistance …

Complexive Ordering Of Reading Experience Through Grapheme-Phoneme Relative Frequency Control, Wesley K. Roberts May 1973

Complexive Ordering Of Reading Experience Through Grapheme-Phoneme Relative Frequency Control, Wesley K. Roberts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation develops a word bank based on a series of well defined filters. The basis of this system is grapheme-phoneme relative frequency control. The word bank is designed to be used in developing reading materials at varied degrees of difficulty.

Four short stories were edited as to their grapheme-phoneme relationships. Reading speed and reading comprehension were measured for each student on these stories. All students read a story in the original form and a story in the filtered version.

No difference in reading comprehension were found, but reading speed was significantly higher on three of four stories.

The program centers around prevention, treatment, and research. A basic principle upon which all is based is a team approach of social work, school, and community. The discussion leads to the community school concept, which is currently seen as one of …

The Interdependence Of Measures Of Vocational Interest And Personality, David O. Barrows Jan 1973

The Interdependence Of Measures Of Vocational Interest And Personality, David O. Barrows

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A basic problem encountered in the area of psychological testing is the determination of what a particular test is measuring. One means by which tests are evaluated is by making observations as to how well scores may predict some specified behavior. For example, a test may be found to predict on-the-job performance. This is known as the predictive validity of a test and is determined by simply computing the coefficient of correlation between the test scores and the criterion to be predicted, which is directly observable.

Faculty Publications

A speech analysis-synthesis system was used to manipulate variance of fundamental frequency and a mechanical rate changer was used to manipulate speech rate. The synthesized and altered voices were tested for realism. Synthesized voices were mistaken for normal 50% to 58% of the time and rate-changed voices were mistaken for normal 78% of the time. Additional studies were conducted to test the effects of these acoustical manipulations on the adjective ratings judges made of speakers. Variance of intonation was increased and decreased by 50% for eight speakers. There was a significantrend for increased intonation to cause voices to be rated …

Integrity House: The Addict As A Total Institution, Kenneth D. Colburn Jan 1973

Integrity House: The Addict As A Total Institution, Kenneth D. Colburn

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Integrity House approach to rehabilitation is an apolitical, myth-oriented method reinforcing the pseudo psychological notion that addiction is exclusively the problem of the addict. Blame is placed solely on the addict; neither social ills nor any other factors share the responsibility for drug abuse.

An Examination Of Sampling Strategies In Concept Identification, Gary B. Gentry Jan 1973

An Examination Of Sampling Strategies In Concept Identification, Gary B. Gentry

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Adult humans make choices in concept identification problems which are determined by the particular strategies which they adopt at the time. In such problems, every presentation of a rnultidimensional concept, such as a stimulus which varies in form, color and shape, is referred to as an "instance". Described two general approaches which Ss take in learning a concept. The wholist strategy involves using all of the attributes of a concept as a working hypothesis. As successive instances are presented, the S gradually eliminates the irrelevant attributes. Another approach to discrimination learning may be referred to as the partist strategy. In …
