Habit Reversal Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa, Ken Small May 1985

Habit Reversal Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa, Ken Small

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although several writers have emphasized the habit-like characteristics of bulimia nervosa, no study has investigated the extent to which bulimia responds to treatment specifically for habit disorders. Habit reversal is a general treatment plan which teaches individuals to regain lost awareness of all aspects of a habit. The habit is then interrupted at the earliest movement in the chain by a physically competing response. Habit reversal (Azrin & Nunn, 1973) has been effective in treating other habits (e.g., stuttering, tics, bruxism). In the present study, habit reversal was adapted for the treatment of bulimia.

In response to newspaper advertisements, ten …

A Comparison Of Evaluation Models For Handicap Intervention In A Head Start Program, Carin Niebuhr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Model A and Model C Title I evaluation options were compared by using both options to measure the effectiveness of handicap intervention in a Head Start program. Two hundred three children in Jackson County (Oregon) were pretested with the Developmental Indicators of Learning Test (DIAL), the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), the Visual-Motor Integration Scale (VMI), and the Carrow Elicited Language Inventory (CELI). The 43 children who scored below the predetermined cut-off level were placed in a six-month intervention program. One hundred forty-nine children remaining in the Head Start program in May were posttested with the same tests. Model …

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of geographical differences on the Developmental Sentence Scoring normative data for children ages 6.0 to 6.11, by comparing the original DSS normative data with that obtained in Canby, Oregon. A collateral purpose was to develop norms for the geographical area of Canby, Oregon, using the DSS procedure. Forty children, ten within each of the four, three-month age subgroups between 6.0 and 6.11, were chosen. All of the children came from monolingual, middle-class families and had normal hearing, normal receptive vocabulary skills, and no known unusual social, developmental, or behavioral …

Beta-Endorphin And Running Addiction: Use In The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Mania, Depression, And Anxiety, James Glenn Rogers May 1985

Beta-Endorphin And Running Addiction: Use In The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Mania, Depression, And Anxiety, James Glenn Rogers

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Neither Glasser's (1976) survey data nor popular magazine articles (which seldom cite references) have provided conclusive evidence regarding the existence of running addiction or established causality between this addiction and Beta-endorphin. An integration and summarization of research on the effects of opiates, Beta-endorphin and running will answer the following question, or indicate where evidence is insufficient and explore avenues that require further research.

  • Question 1: Is distance running addictive and if so, what is the role of Beta-endorphin in this addiction?

Secondly, prior reviews of research of the effects of opiates and Beta-endorphin on psychopathological illnesses will be combined with …

Generalized Hope, Expectancies, Locus Of Control, And Spiritual Wellbeing In Relation To Quitting Smoking, Wayne C. Palmer Apr 1985

Generalized Hope, Expectancies, Locus Of Control, And Spiritual Wellbeing In Relation To Quitting Smoking, Wayne C. Palmer

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Conceptually, hope has long been acknowledged in theological and psychological circles as central to human motivation and behavior. However, empirical investigations of hope are relatively recent. The two major objectives of this dissertation were: 1) to investigate the relationship between hope and subsequent behavioral outcomes, and 2) to address this subject area in such a way as to contribute to the integration of psychological and biblically theological constructs that pertain to hope, expectations and behavior change. Hope was operationalized as: "an expectation greater than zero of attaining a goal." Parallels between psychological and biblical perspectives were drawn in regard to: …

A Perception Based Integrative Theory Of Individual Behavior In Organizations, John Edward Mathieu Apr 1985

A Perception Based Integrative Theory Of Individual Behavior In Organizations, John Edward Mathieu

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop an integrative theoretical approach to the study of individuals' behavior in organizations, and to present an application of the approach to understanding the performance of Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets. Individuals' perceptions of the environment were proposed to exist at three levels of analysis: (1) psychological climate (i.e., individual); (2) group climate; and organizational climate. Further, climate perceptions were proposed to result from the simultaneous influence of objective (i.e., actual) situational characteristics, and individuals' needs and characteristics. The underlying dimensions that linked climate perceptions operationalized at the three levels of analysis …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine predictors of smoking behavior for the senior student nurses in the state of Alabama using Ajzen and Fishbein's Theory of Reasoned Action. Smoking prevalence by level of educational preparation and selected health behaviors were examined for relationship to cigarette use.

A sample of 11 schools of nursing were selected from Alabama's 34, using a random numbers table. There were 13 total programs as two of the schools had both A.D. and B.S. nursing programs. Thirty-two percent (N=555) of senior A.D., B.S. & diploma students nurses in Alabama responded to an 87 item …

Levels And Conditions Of Goal Acceptance, Kim James Kohlhepp Mar 1985

Levels And Conditions Of Goal Acceptance, Kim James Kohlhepp

Student Work

The role of goal acceptance in goal setting theory was investigated through the application of Reiman's theory of social influence and multilevel models of goal acceptance. Subjects were 144 undergraduate students. A 2X2X2 factorial design was employed. The three factors were: (a) antecedents of compliance (reward versus no reward), (b) antecedents of internalization (high value relevance versus low value relevance), and (c) goal specificity (specified goals versus non-specified goals). Three measures of goal acceptance were differentially affected by the manipulations: (a) A measure of intention to complete was uniformly high and not affected by the manipulations. (b) Perceived effort toward …

Adolescent Self-Disclosure And Loneliness: Private Self-Consciousness And Parental Influences, Stephen L. Franzoi, Mark H. Davis Mar 1985

Adolescent Self-Disclosure And Loneliness: Private Self-Consciousness And Parental Influences, Stephen L. Franzoi, Mark H. Davis

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Using structural equation techniques, we tested a theoretical model designed to describe the causal relations existing among loneliness, self-disclosure to peers and parents, and specific antecedent variables. Participants were 350 high-school students who answered questions concerning themselves and their interpersonal relationships. Results generally indicated a good fit between the theoretical model and the observed relations. In addition to replicating the findings of previous studies concerning the relation between self-disclosure and loneliness, results also indicated an indirect relation between private self-consciousness and loneliness via peer self-disclosure; that is, high private self-conscious adolescents' greater willingness to self-disclose to peers resulted in their …

Orronic Pain: A Study Of Treatment Outcome As It Relates To Coping Behaviors, Assertiveness, Spiritual Well-Being, And Mmpi Scores, William H. Mullins Feb 1985

Orronic Pain: A Study Of Treatment Outcome As It Relates To Coping Behaviors, Assertiveness, Spiritual Well-Being, And Mmpi Scores, William H. Mullins

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study evaluated chronic pain patients in an attempt to predict treatment outcome. Forty-one volunteer patients completed a Patient History Questionnaire, The Ways of Coping (WOC), The Interpersonal Behavior Survey (!BS), The Spiritual Well-Being Inventory (SWB) , and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Each of these instruments were used to predict treatment outcome as measured by items from the Pain Treatment Outcome Questionnaire including Functional Activity Level, Use of Analgesic Medications, Subjective Pain Rating, and Return to Work. Linear regression statistics were used to determine which of the independent variables successfully predicted treatment outcome. Number of Months Since Last …

In Search Of An Operational Definition Of Social Creativity, Constance J. O'Brien Feb 1985

In Search Of An Operational Definition Of Social Creativity, Constance J. O'Brien

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Having argued for the existence of social creativity as observed in daily life, I will proceed in chapters two through four with a selective review of the psychological literature on social cognition, empathy, and social intelligence to determine whether any of these concepts can adequately account for the behavior cited. I will proceed to identify the connections between these concepts and creativity. Examining the concepts, their relationships to each other, and the degree to which any of these concepts alone can account for imaginative social problem solving will demonstrate the need for a new [...]

Piaget And Parables: The Convergence Of Secular And Scriptural Views Of Learning, James D. Foster Jan 1985

Piaget And Parables: The Convergence Of Secular And Scriptural Views Of Learning, James D. Foster

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Jean Piaget is widely acclaimed as a developmental theorist who has contributed much to the understanding of how children learn. While many educators adhere to Piaget’s model of learning, few realize that techniques similar in structure were used by Jesus 2000 years ago. Basic components of Piaget’s theory, namely assimilation, accommodation, and disequilibration of the learner, are evidenced in the parabolic method used by Jesus. This comparison between Piaget’s theory and Christ’s parabolic method suggests that an effective teacher would cognitively activate and disequilibrate the learner. Insights from Scripture and Piaget’s theory imply that motivation through disequilibration should be effective …

Animal Pain, Bernard E. Rollin Jan 1985

Animal Pain, Bernard E. Rollin

Experimentation Collection

Some time ago, I received a telephone call from an eminent primatologist asking me to give the keynote address at a scientific seminar on animal pain. My first response was to express surprise that they were inviting a philosopher. His reply was remarkable, if only for its rarity among scientists: "The truly interesting and important issues concerning pain in animals are not scientific ones," he said. "They are moral, philosophical, and conceptual ones. And the total failure of science to engage or even acknowledge these issues discredits biomedical science and weakens its conceptual base." I hope to show you that …

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk Jan 1985

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Although much research has been devoted to studying sex differences In functioning (e.g., Maccoby and Jacklin 1974), most efforts have been directed toward documenting or elucidating the proximate causes of sex differences. Few attempts have been made, however, to explain the ultimate causes of these differences or the selective pressures that have led to the development or psychological differences between males and females [for exception see Symons (1979) and Daly and Wilson (1983)]. Toward this end of blending psychology with evolutionary theory we develop what we call the " primary caretaker hypothesis," which predicts that the sex that through evolutionary …

Black White Differences On The K-Abc In An Appalachian Sample, Edward L. Winter Jan 1985

Black White Differences On The K-Abc In An Appalachian Sample, Edward L. Winter

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study investigated the effect of race on black and white Appalachian children's performance on the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) Global Scales. The Global Scale standard scores of 24 black (12 males and 12 females) and 24 white (12 males and 12 females) children between the ages of 6-0 and 12-6 were used. The white children were randomly selected to match the age, sex and family education levels of the black children. Multivariate analysis of variance results indicated that there were no overall race, sex, or Race x sex interaction effects on the pattern of scores of the …
