The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

MARTIN TROPP considers the message of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with reference to contemporary views of mind, body, and will. Tropp is Professor of English at Babson College. He is the author of scholarly articles on such writers as Nathaniel West, and two books, one on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein monster and the other on horror stories in modern culture, 1818- 1918.

Among the writers newly found in the more open society of Gorbachev's era, RICHARD L. CHAPPLE observes, the talent of Tatyana Tolstaya is notable for creating portraits of ordinary people of the middle class. They …

The Fraternal Conceit: Individualist Versus Collectivist Ideas Of Community, Chandran Kukathas Jan 1991

The Fraternal Conceit: Individualist Versus Collectivist Ideas Of Community, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the modern world countless minorities press separate claims for recognition by their fellow countrymen, by their states and, in some cases, by the world. Many of these groups, such as the Australian Aborigines and New Zealand Maoris, describe themselves as indigenous peoples, while others identify themselves simply as ethnic or cultural minorities with legitimate grievances. The various demands made by such groups leave us in no doubt that there is a political problem. But there is also an important philosophical question to be addressed: a question about the terms of civil association. The modern world has seen two great …

Politics And Education: The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade, Teresa Squires Osborne Oct 1990

Politics And Education: The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade, Teresa Squires Osborne

Dissertations and Theses

The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade of 1980, carried out in the aftermath,of a long and destructive revolution, was able, in five months time, to decrease the nation's illiteracy rate from 50 percent to 13 percent. The newly fonned Nicaraguan government, recognizing the political nature of education, viewed its Literacy Crusade as a major step· in the development of a "new", post-revolutionary Nicaragua.

As a means of comparison, two other literacy campaigns are also examined: the Cuban campaign of 1961, and the UNESCO-sponsored Experimental World Literacy Programme, in place from 1965-1973.

The Cuban campaign served as a precursor to the Nicaraguan effort. …

Signals Intelligence In World War Ii Ultra And The Air War In Europe, Demetrio J. Perez Jun 1989

Signals Intelligence In World War Ii Ultra And The Air War In Europe, Demetrio J. Perez

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

(First paragraph) In recent years the study of military intelligence, particularly when viewed from a historical context, has acquired new significance. As military historians attempt to find a correlation between wartime events and the intelligence activities supporting those events, many serious works in this field have emerged. Some accounts of World War II military intelligence deal with the subject in terms of its benefits to the field commander. Others take a more extreme view and argue that major wartime successes resulted more from good intelligence than from good leadership.

Discourse And Perspective In Daoism: A Linguistic Interpretation Of Ziran, William A. Callahan Jan 1989

Discourse And Perspective In Daoism: A Linguistic Interpretation Of Ziran, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In Chinese philosophical literature, the term zirana is generally rendered as "spontaneity," "natural," or "self-so" by both Chinese and Western trans- lators. I think that these translations not only miss the point being made in the texts, but actually serve to obscure it

Approaching The Constitution, Don Herzog Oct 1988

Approaching The Constitution, Don Herzog

Reviews

These are sumptuously produced, oversized volumes: one pictures them, as I suspect some shrewd accountant at the press did, decorating the shelves of lawyers' offices. Their pages are crammed full of primary texts, two columns on each page, in an alarmingly small but somehow readable typeface. Some texts are bare snippets; others wind on luxuriantly for many pages. The editors have set a cutoff point: no text from after 1835 appears. Like much else about these volumes, that decision reflects a set of theoretical commitments about the Constitution that I want to question. Not that these volumes are explicitly cast …
