Spindle Irregularities, Chromatin Transfer, And Chromatin Stickiness During Male Meiosis In Anemone Tetrasepala (Ranunculaceae), Pawan Kumar Rana, Puneet Kumar, Vijay Kumar Singhal
Turkish Journal of Botany
Detailed cytological investigations performed in Anemone tetrasepala Royle from the Pangi Valley revealed the presence of various irregularities (spindle irregularities, chromatin transfer, chromatin stickiness, and nonsynchronous condensation of chromatin material) for the first time in the species that existed at diploid level (2n = 14). Spindle irregularities resulted in dyads, triads, polyads, and micronuclei in sporads during microsporogenesis and variable sized pollen grains and reduced fertility in pollen grains (85.38%). Direct fusion among proximate meiocytes resulted in the formation of syncyte pollen mother cells. Such syncytes yielded jumbo-sized pollen grains that were surely of unreduced nature in their genetic constitution. …

Anther Development And Cytochemistry In Asphodelus Aestivus (Asphodelaceae), Fi̇li̇z Vardar, Işil İsmai̇loğlu, Meral Ünal
Turkish Journal of Botany
Asphodelus aestivus Brot. (Asphodelaceae) anthers were analysed to provide a detailed understanding of the events that lead to pollen grain development, accompanied by cytochemical observations at different ontogenic stages. An anther locule of A. aestivus was bordered by 4 different layers: the tapetum, the middle layer, the endothecium, and the epidermis. At the tetrad stage, secretory tapetal cells enlarged maximally, while they showed degeneration at the young microspore stage. During the course of the degeneration, vacuolisation and reduction in the volume were conspicuous. Cytochemical analysis revealed that tapetal cells presented an intense reaction with regard to protein, insoluble polysaccharides, and …

Gamma-Induced Infraspecific Polyploidy Via Cytomixis-Mediated Syncyte Formation In Papaver Somniferum (Papaveraceae), Girjesh Kumar, Sana Naseem
Turkish Journal of Botany
This is the first report on the phenomenon of syncyte manifestation through cytomictic transmigration in Papaver somniferum L. The occurrence characteristics and cytological depictions of cytomixis in the meiotic course of gamma-irradiated population reveal the mechanism leading to the origin of the cell fusions/syncytes. The event was more frequent in meiosis I and rare in meiosis II, indicating that the process atrophies at the end of the first meiotic division. The degree of occurrence of the phenomenon virtually concurred with the increase in the treatment dose of gamma irradiation. The phenomenon also affected the qualitative composition of postmeiotic products, i.e. …

Sporobolus arabicus Boiss. is a perennial stoloniferous grass that prefers a saline or desert habitat. A natural population of Sporobolus arabicus growing in a salty area was compared with a normal nonsaline population. The salt-tolerant population showed better growth than its counterpart. Physioanatomical adaptations to saline environments in the salt-tolerant population were very specific. They included restricted toxic ion uptake, production of organic osmolytes, sclerification in roots, succulence in stem, and development of vesicular hairs on the leaves. These adaptations were not only for the excretion of toxic ions but also for the accumulation of inorganic ions in the parenchymatous …

The Phylogeny Of Heterocapsa Sp. (Dinophyceae) Isolated From The South Coast Of Iran During A Cochlodinium Polykrikoides Bloom, Gilan Attaran Fariman, Pegah Javid
Turkish Journal of Botany
The genus Heterocapsa Stein is a relatively small armoured dinoflagellate. Because it has few differences in morphological characteristics among its species, species identification is difficult. In this study, small Heterocapsa sp. cells associated with a dense bloom of Cochlodinium polykrikoides Margalef were collected from the south-east coast of Iran. While Heterocapsa sp. was isolated, C. polykrikoides could not be isolated by single cell or serial dilution methods. Thus, a unialgal strain of Heterocapsa sp. was used for molecular analysis and species identification. In order to carry out phylogenetic analysis, rDNA was extracted and large subunit domains of D1-D3 were sequenced. …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Lupinus montanus subsp. montanus var. montanus Kunth is a widespread taxon occurring throughout the highlands of Central Mexico and Guatemala. Populations of this variety show little variation in plant morphology, but their highly disjunct island-like distribution suggests that genetic differentiation between populations should be expected. To test this idea, we assessed genetic diversity among 13 populations of Lupinus montanus var. montanus growing on the 6 main volcanoes of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) using 4 intersimple sequence repeat markers to quantify genetic divergence. The 93 loci identified showed significant differentiation between populations (F_{ST} \approx 0.5) and high levels of genetic …

Alyssum corsicum Duby is a candidate plant used for phytomining and phytoremediation studies with its high Ni-accumulating ability of the aboveground tissues. Metal localization and concentration by hyperaccumulator plants and the physiological basis of these phenomena have been of great interest in recent years. A. corsicum seeds were grown at different concentrations of Ni in Murashige and Skoog medium. Multielement concentrations of the plant roots and shoots were determined by polarized energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. Ni, Ca, Mg, and Fe localization and concentration at the upper and lower leaf surfaces were determined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with the energy-dispersive …
