Variation In Response To Phosphorus Among Sweetpotato (Ipomoea Batatas L.) Cultivars, Jeffrey Cole Denis Gregorie
Variation In Response To Phosphorus Among Sweetpotato (Ipomoea Batatas L.) Cultivars, Jeffrey Cole Denis Gregorie
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Phosphorus (P) is essential for plant growth and is often a major limiting nutrient in agriculture. In sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas), studies on the role of P on storage root yield have been limited because of the lack of response and inconsistent results across cultivars and years. Growing evidence shows that current phosphate (Pi) fertilizer rates can be reduced while maintaining productivity. Newly published molecular evidence shows differential expression of phosphate starvation response genes among sweetpotato cultivars, further supporting the hypothesis of cultivar-specific Pi sensitivity. The research herein sought to characterize root system architecture and yield response to Pi …
Analysis Of The Effect On N Nutrition On Dry Matter Yield Of A Sward By Reference To Potential Yield And Optimum N Content, G Lemaire, F Gastal, J Salette
Analysis Of The Effect On N Nutrition On Dry Matter Yield Of A Sward By Reference To Potential Yield And Optimum N Content, G Lemaire, F Gastal, J Salette
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Previous work has shown that the N content of a sward could be related to the dry matter accumulation during the course of the regrowth by the following equation : N % = a(Wtb, where W is the weight of aboveground biomass and N % the N concentration of dry matter (Salette & Lemaire, 1981). The coefficient a represents the N % for an aerial biomass of I t/ha, and b characterizes the degree of dilution of N during the regrowth. When b = 0, N % remains constant during the regrowth. If b = I, there is an increase …

Optimization Of Grassland Ecosystem Production By Anthropogenic Treatment, R Holubek, J Jancovic
Optimization Of Grassland Ecosystem Production By Anthropogenic Treatment, R Holubek, J Jancovic
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Abundant amount of the new knowledge was gained by an intensive research of grassland ecosystem in Czechoslovakia and other European countries during last 25 years. It was confirmed that under favourable humid conditions and sufficient macronutrients and micronutrients together with adequate Nfertilizing should be nearly reached ecologically conditioned level of potential productivity and dry matter or N-compounds yields should be increased by 100-200 or 200-300 per cent respectively (Velich, 1986). Introduction of scientific methods of controlled agricultural production together with higher landscape protection requirements, stability of ecosystems, quality and healthproved foods requirements have changed the traditional views to the nutrition …
Experiment Of Trace Elements Fertilizer Spraying On Sown Pasture, Tu Minyi
Experiment Of Trace Elements Fertilizer Spraying On Sown Pasture, Tu Minyi
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The application of compound phosphate in the way of rotationary fertilizing in sections in successive years kept the vigorous growth of pasture composed of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) in the first several years after the pasture was grazed in 1981. But the pasture could not keep the growing vigour even with the same level of fertilization in the last two years. Considering the unbalanced nutrition being one of the major reasons, a preliminary experiment of trace elements spraying has been undertaken in Nanshan Sown Pasture-land aiming at identifying if trace fertilizers …

Some Nitrogen Forms And Micronutrients In Silage Maize Leaves As Affected By Nk Fertilization And Liming, C.L F. Carranca, M A. Castelo Branco
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The nutritive value of a forage depends on the quality which, in time, is dependent on protein, sugar, cellulose, fat and mineral elements content. The existence of deficiencies may limit the maximum yield and also the quality. Several experiments have been carried out in order to study the effect of liming and NK fertilization on the nutrients uptake by silage maize and yields.
The Diagnosis Of Grassland Mineral Nutrient Status Through Herbage Analysis, J Salette, Lydie Huche
The Diagnosis Of Grassland Mineral Nutrient Status Through Herbage Analysis, J Salette, Lydie Huche
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
It appears more and more clearly that soil analysis is not sufficient to give a good approximation of the mineral status of grassland soils. In perennial crops leaf analysis and empirical critical levels are widely utilized. This grassland approach emphasizes the good results which can be obtained for nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus not from leaf but from the whole herbage plant analysis. This paper deals with pure grass stands.
Modelling Nutrient Uptake By A Grass Sward: Long Term Studies Over Several Years, J Salette, Lydie Huche
Modelling Nutrient Uptake By A Grass Sward: Long Term Studies Over Several Years, J Salette, Lydie Huche
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Many experiments were conducted to assess the short term effects of fertilization management on nitrogen and mineral uptake of cut or grazed swards. One important work was performed to model the grass nutrition status during a regrowth (Salette, 1982; Salette et al., 1983; Salette et al., 1989), but for both a theoretical and practical point of view it is of great interest to evaluate the evolution of N and mineral uptake throughout all the years of a pasture life. This paper gives an analysis of nitrogen and mineral uptake dynamics during several years and proposes a model for sward N …

Effects Of Humic Acid And Salt Stress On Growth, Physiological Parameters And Mineral Substance Uptake In Artemisia Dracunculus L. (Tarragon), Serhat Seven, Şener Akinci
Turkish Journal of Botany
In this study, the physiological changes in Artemisia dracunculus L. plants under salinity stress and the remediative roles of leonardite-derived liquid humic acid (HA) were investigated. Salt stress caused a significant decrease in measured growth parameters (plant height, fresh weight of leaves and stems, dry weight of leaves and stems, number of leaves and leaf area). HA had a positive effect on growth parameters at 75 mM NaCl concentration, except for leaf number, but its effect was limited at 150 mM NaCl concentration. The total amount of protein was found to be lower in the leaves of seedlings grown under …
Derivation And Testing Of Nutrient Norms For White Clover, Marta J. Rodreiguez
Derivation And Testing Of Nutrient Norms For White Clover, Marta J. Rodreiguez
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Foliar analysis has been practiced widely to diagnose the nutrient status of crops in order to give fertilizer recommendations. The changing nature of plant tissue mineral concentrations imposes limitations on the use of foliar analysis for diagnostic purposes. In this way, sampling of particular plant parts at particular stages of development is required to assess the nutrient status of crop and forage plants. The Diagnosis and Recommendations Integrated System (DRIS) was developed by Beaufils (1973), based on a holistic experimental approach, as a means of coping with the problems derived of the dynamic nature of foliar composition. Three concepts are …

Liming And Phosphate Fertilization On Forage Production, Mineral Composition And Nodulation On Pigeonpea (Cajanus Cajan (L.) Millsp.), V T. Paulino, N L. Costa, C.G S. Pedreira
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
For legume forage plant contribute effectively to grassland improvement, mainly through high herbage yields and fixation of atmospheric N, it is necessary to have a better knowledge of its nutritional requirements, since pigeonpea does not grow well on acidic soils with high levels of Al and poor in Ca, Mg and P. Ogunwale and Olaniyi (1978) reported a significant increase on forage production and P and Ca uptake for pigeonpea as a result of phosphate fertilization, while Abrufi.a et al., (1984) observed that lime improved growth, nodulation and P and Ca uptake, but with little effect on crude protein content. …

Effects Of Phosphogypsum, Phsophorus And Lime On Andropogon Gayanus Kunth, V T. Paulino, E Malavolta
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
There are several factors which determine the low animal productivity in the tropics. Among these factors, inadequate nutrition is the most limiting one followed by the low natural fertility and high acidity of the soils in these regions. Previous findings have shown important soil nutrient deficiencies in some Brazilian cerrado soils. Malavolta (1952) demonstrated sulfur (S) deficiencies, while Werner et al. (1967) found plant response to S. Responses to phosphorus addition are very common in this kind of soil and in tropical America there are rates of phosphorus being applied, which sometimes are uneconomical for the formation and maintenance of …
An Effective P Application Method For Dactylis Glomerata, M Hojito, A Nishimune, M Noshiro
An Effective P Application Method For Dactylis Glomerata, M Hojito, A Nishimune, M Noshiro
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
There are two practical ways to apply phosphorus (P) fertilizer on cutting type grasslands in Hokkaido, Japan. The first one is to apply P at a rate of about I 00 kg P2Os/ha in the spring (April) in one application. Some reasons for this method have been explained (Hayakawa et al., 1951). However, in some cases, it is more convenient for practical management to apply three equal amounts of P, at three different times during the year (April, June and August) the same as other fertilizers such as nitrogen or potassium. That is a second way. Grassland soil is acidified …

Distribution Of Phosphorus And Aluminum In Acidic Pasture Soils And Effects On Growth Of Subterranean Clover, M J. Mclaughlin, T R. James
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In south-eastern Australia, pasture improvement and the use of superphosphate fertilizers have resulted in the gradual acidification of many soils under subterranean clover pastures (Williams, 1980). Despite high values of exchangeable and extractable aluminium (and low pH) recorded in many soils, there are few reports of significant responses of clover growth to lime application in the field. In this study we examined the vertical distribution of CaCb-extractable aluminium (Al) and available phosphorus (Bray P) in pasture topsoils. We also simulated the conditions in the field sites by investigating in solution culture the response of subterranean clover to various concentrations of …
Study Of Some Factors That Influence Upon P Fertilization On Pastures From Red Ferralitic Soil, Marta Hernandez, A R. Mesa
Study Of Some Factors That Influence Upon P Fertilization On Pastures From Red Ferralitic Soil, Marta Hernandez, A R. Mesa
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The importance of P for vegetal nutrition has been a topic of study for several workers. However, results obtained have not always been positive using P fertilizer due to some factors such as the content of this nutrient in the soil and its fixation capacity. This study was conducted in order to evaluate the response of guinea grass cv. Likoni and buffel grass cv. Biloela to P fertilization. These pastures were selected due to their favourable behaviour and the different levels of exigency to P that they present.
Response Of Forage Oats To Nitrogen Fertilizer In High And Low Fertility Soils, N Moreira
Response Of Forage Oats To Nitrogen Fertilizer In High And Low Fertility Soils, N Moreira
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Forage oats are used extensively as whole-crop in rainfed areas of Portugal as is traditional in Mediterranean areas. They are cropped with minimum inputs, and increasingly in mixtures with annual legumes such as Vivia sativa (Moreira, 1989). In addition to the fact that relatively low yields are obtained in these conditions, the oats harvested during grain filling have a very low crude protein content, which severely limits their nutritive value (Eagles et al., 1979; Abreu et al., 1982). The aim of the present study is to determine the effects of nitrogen fertilizer on whole-crop forage oats in terms of drymatter …

Applications Of Archaeal Antioxidant Coenzyme M As An Agricultural Biostimulant, Jeremy Hunter Brown
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
As the demand to meet global food security goals continue to increase, the need to increase efficiency and productivity of agricultural output also rises. This calls for innovative and cost-effective methods for improving plant growth and yield. Here we explore how antioxidants, molecules that inhibit oxidation and are necessary for redox based signaling and redox homeostasis, can be utilized as chemical biostimulants. Specifically, we investigated Coenzyme M, an antioxidant from archaea that holds potential economic advantages over other antioxidants. Chapter 1 provides a comprehensive review of antioxidants and how exogenously application of them affects plant growth and biology, highlighting the …

Northern hardwood forests have long been assumed to be primarily nitrogen limited, but may often be co-limited by multiple elements. Nutrient limitation can be inferred through responses of foliar and litter chemistry to nutrient addition over time. We compared community-level foliar and litter chemistry and resorption efficiency in a long-term, factorial nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization study across 10 forest stands at three sites in New Hampshire, where N and P were added annually. We measured N, P, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) in foliage from codominant trees and in fresh litter in 2008–2010 (pretreatment) and again …
Starter Transplant Solutions Do Not Improve Cabbage Yield In High-Fertility Soil, Charlie Rohwer, Jesen Hosch
Starter Transplant Solutions Do Not Improve Cabbage Yield In High-Fertility Soil, Charlie Rohwer, Jesen Hosch
Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
Starter fertilizers, generally high in phosphorus, are often used when transplanting vegetable crops. However, many small-scale vegetable growers have very high soil phosphorus levels, and phosphorus may be unnecessary in such conditions. Alternatively, enhanced soil microbial activity at transplant may help to make the soil phosphorus more available to the transplants. We tested this by using molasses or high-P fertilizer in the transplant solution when planting cabbage into high-fertility soil. Results indicate no benefit to cabbage from any transplant solution in high-fertility conditions, and detrimental effects from the large amount of molasses used.

Wild Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Lepidota) Identification And Management In Pastures, Jacob Hadfield, Taun Beddes, Michael Caron, Corey Ransom
All Current Publications
Wild licorice, also known as American licorice, is a perennial legume native to North America, commonly found in the western United States. Wild licorice reproduces rapidly through seeds and rhizomes, leading to large infestations, particularly in pastures. The low preference of livestock for wild licorice results in overgrazing of other plant species, leaving them at a competitive disadvantage, further promoting the spread of wild licorice and contributing to pasture infestations. This fact sheet reviews the identification and management of wild licorice in pastures.

Elevated Root-Zone P And Nutrient Concentration Do Not Increase Yield Or Cannabinoids In Medical Cannabis, Julie A. Hershkowitz, F. Mitchell Westmoreland, Bruce Bugbee
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
Elevating nutrient input is thought to increase yield and cannabinoid concentration of medical cannabis, but increased legalization has heightened awareness of the environmental impact of overfertilization. Elevated levels of phosphorus (P) are of particular concern. Here we report the effects of increasing P above levels adequate for other crops (15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 mg per L) and the interactive effects of elevated P with elevated nutrient solution concentration (electrical conductivity; 2 and 4 mS per cm). We used closed-system hydroponics to continuously quantify rootzone nutrient concentrations. The concentration of P in leaf tissue doubled and flower P concentration …
