Evidence For The Presence Of Two Nucleases In Barley Tissue And The Influence Of Genotype On Their Properties, Clay G. Johnson Jan 1972

Evidence For The Presence Of Two Nucleases In Barley Tissue And The Influence Of Genotype On Their Properties, Clay G. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several lines of evidence have shown that genetic variability exists within the barley species (Hordeum vulgare L.) with respect to the kinetics and specificity of yeast ribonucleic acid degradation. Initial efforts demonstrated that ribonuclease (RNase), in the crude soluble protein fraction from the cultivar Dicktoo, was inhibited by KC1 and phosphate. RNase activity was enhanced if heated to 60 C for short periods. In contrast, RNase in the crude soluble protein of the cultivar Tennessee Winter showed no altered response by either KC1 or phosphate. Maximal RNase activity was at pH 5.0 for extracts of both cultivars (0.16 M KC1), …

Follicular Development In Heifers Infused With Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, D. B. Laster Jan 1972

Follicular Development In Heifers Infused With Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, D. B. Laster

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Follicle-stimulating hormone from different species has been used to increase ovulation and calving rates in cattle, injections proving to be most successful when given during the late follicular phase of the oestrous cycle or in combination with progestagens (Willett & Buckner, 1953; Bellows, Anderson & Short 1969). Some investigations have resulted in substantial increases in ovulation and calving rates, but there is usually a high degree of variation in ovarian response. Patterns of follicular growth and atresia have been studied in cattle (Rajakoski, 1960) and hypotheses have been suggested to explain how exogenous FSH stimulates follicle growth in relation to …

The systematic investigations of the potential of the Ord area for irrigated farming began during the Second World War when the possibilities of damming the river were first examined, initial soil survey was carried out, and agricultural experiments started. The Kimberley Research Station was established on its present site in 1945. A year later the State and Commonwealth Governments agreed to finance and operate the Station jointly, with CSIRO and the Western Australian Department of Agriculture being responsible for research.

The construction of the main dam designed to store 5,675 million m" ( 4.6 million acre feet) was completed in …

Kimberley Research Station Review Of Progress, 1968-71, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The potential for harnessing northern rivers flowing to the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Timor Sea was realised many years ago.

These rivers together are estimated to carry about three times the water transported annually over the Murray drainage system and the South Eastern slopes, which comprise the closely settled agricultural areas of South Eastern Australia.

The Kimberley Research Station was established in 1946 to investigate the potential for irrigated agriculture in the Ord River valley. This is a review of the Station's sixth progress report which is being published as Department of Agriculture Bulletin No. 3861.

Disappearance And Uptake Of [125I]Fsh In The Rat, Rabbit, Ewe And Cow, D. B. Laster

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Follicle-stimulating hormone (NIH-FSH-S8) was labelled with 125I to determine its disappearance rate after a single intravenous injection and to determine the level of circulating [125I]fsh in the blood after a single intramuscular or subcutaneous injection in the rat, rabbit, ewe and cow. There was a difference in the disappearance and uptake rates among the four species, but the shape of the curve for rate of loss and uptake of labelled fsh was similar in all species. The disappearance of radioactivity occurred at two rates; the first from 1 to 8 min and the second from …

Effect Of Fertilization And Management On The Production Of Bromegrass In Northeast Nebraska, G. W. Rehm, W. J. Moline, E. J. Schwartz, R. S. Moomaw

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Several experiments were conducted in northeast Nebraska to determine the effect of fertility and management practices on the production of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss). The effectiveness of the various fertilizer treatments was measured in units of dry matter produced per acre as well as beef produced per acre. Results of these studies showed that the production of bromegrass pastures in Nebraska could be markedly improved through proper fertilization.

Penstemon In Your Garden, R. D. Uhlinger, G. Viehmeyer

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

A new race of hardy perennials is beginning to appear in American gardens. These are the penstemons, a genus of plants closely related to the familiar snapdragon, which may become important ornamentals as they be come better known to gardeners. The purpose of this bulletin is to show the possibility of the genus as an ornamental and to suggest species and species hybrids of possible value to Great Plains gardeners; to provide information about propagation and culture; and to encourage gardeners to engage in penstemon breeding as an avocation.

A Flora From The Dakota Sandstone Formation (Cenomanian) Near Westwater, Grand County, Utah, Samuel R. Rushforth

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A Cretaceous (Cenomanian) flora from the Dakota Sandstone Formation near Westwater, Grand County, Utah contains an admixture of ferns and angiosperms. The ferns of this flora are representative of an older Jurassic-Wealden vegetational type, whereas the angiosperms are typical of the modern vegetational type. Species of Gleichenia and Matonidium and Astralopteris coloradica represent the dominant forms in this flora.

The Westwater flora contains fourteen genera including nineteen species and one variety. New species described from this flora include Asplenium dakotensis, Coniopteris westwaterensis and Ilex serrata.

Evaluation Of Cross-Fertilization In Forage Crops, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Sep 1971

Evaluation Of Cross-Fertilization In Forage Crops, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In the improvement of forage crop varieties knowledge of the extent of cross-fertilization is of value for (1) determining the extent and randomness of crossing in breeding procedures, (2) estimating varietal changes due to contamination and mechanical mixtures, and (3) evaluating effects of cross-fertilization in the development and production of synthetic and hybrid combinations. Genetic markers can aid greatly in the evaluation of cross·fertilization, and thus in the development and production of new varieties. Ideally, markers should be distinctive and readily detected in the seedling stage, conditioned by a single dominant gene with complete penetrance, and have no adverse effects …
