Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M G. Mason Jan 1975

Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M G. Mason

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, the farmer needs some understanding of how these factors work.

Lupin Breeding In Western Australia : The Narrow-Leaf Lupin (Lupinus Angustifolius), John Sylvester Gladstones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Over the past seven years the narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) has become a significant crop plant in Western Australia.

The present crop varieties are the result of a long-term breeding programme started in 1954 with the aim of producing a broad-acre crop from a plant well adapted to our light soils but with a number of characteristics which precluded its use for cropping.

To an original sweet narrowleafed lupin, soft-seededness, nonshattering pods, early flowering and a distinctive appearance to distinguish it from bitter types were progressively added.

The author of this article, Dr. J. S. Gladstones, began lupin breeding at …

Summary Of Trial Results - 1975, N. R. Mckeown

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

1. From September 1971 to late August 1974 there was a mean reduction of legume content in the medic pastures from 40 per cent to 22.0 per cent but the reduction at 7.4 sh/ha was to 31 per cent. The drop in woolly clover content on the volunteer pastures was closely similar. 2. In 1972, at 7.4 sheep/ha a difference in body weight of 7-9 kg rapidly developed in favour of sheep grazing barrel medic compared with sheep on volunteer pasture. This difference was maintained consistently throughout the trial. At lower stocking rates the differences were smaller and less consistent. …

A Revision Of The Astragalus Lentiginosus Complex For The State Of Utah, Carol Susan Schoener

Theses and Dissertations

The taxonomy and distribution of the Astragalus lentiginosus complex in Utah is presented. The nine varieties are listed and a key is provided which allows determination of the members of the complex in Utah. Each entity is discussed and illustrated. Two distribtuion maps are included for each variety, one showing the distribution in Utah and the other, the general range of the entity. The body of this work is based on the study of herbarium specimens and field observations and collection. These studies have resulted in the synonymizing of two varieties, the inclusion of another and one nomenclatural change.

Coastal Vegetational Communities Of The Two Texas Barrier Islands, Boca Chica And Brazos, Baltazar Cisneros

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Two Texas barrier islands, Boca Chica and Brazos, have unique coastal vegetational communities that may be Influenced by several environmental factors. These environmental factors include temperature, precipitation, wind speed, sunshine exposure, day length, and dune height. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the total number of coastal plant species per station, season, and year and to consider environmental factors that may significantly affect the number and pattern of coastal species. Coverage comparison between aerial and land sampling and aerial vegetational zonation was also considered.

Results indicated the presence of 21 angiosperm families and a total of 54 species. …

Fisheries Report No 14 - Wilson Inlet - A Seasonally Closed Western Australian South Coast Estuary, R C.J. Lenanton Jun 1974

Fisheries Report No 14 - Wilson Inlet - A Seasonally Closed Western Australian South Coast Estuary, R C.J. Lenanton

Fisheries Research Reports

Considerable conflict has existed for many years between professional fishing, recreational usage and development in the west and south coast estuaries of Western Australia. One of the areas where intense conflict exists is Wilson Inlet.

The Government's task of advising the various interests concerned in these conflicts has been difficult, due to the lack of knowledge of estuarine fauna and environment in relation to usage and development.

The objective of this report is to present a preliminary description of the Wilson Inlet environment, to record the history of netting closures in the Inlet, and to discuss the history of the …

Implications For Microtubule Mediated Ethylene Effects In Pea Stem Sections, David A. Steen Jun 1974

Implications For Microtubule Mediated Ethylene Effects In Pea Stem Sections, David A. Steen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The marked effects of ethylene on pea stem growth have been investigated. Low temperature mid colchicine. both known microtubule depolymerization agents, reverse the effects of ethylene in straight growth tests. Low temperature (6 C) also profoundly reduces the effects of the gas in terms of swelling, hook curvature, and horizontal nutation. Electron microscopy shows that microtubules are reoriented after treatment with ethylene for as little as 12 hours. The findings indicate that some of the ethylene responses may be due to a stabilizing effect on microtubules in plant cells.

Base Composition And Hybridization Studies Of The Three Double-Stranded Rna Segments Of Bacteriophage Φ6, James L. Van Etten, A. K. Vidaver, R. K. Koski, J. P. Burnett Jun 1974

Base Composition And Hybridization Studies Of The Three Double-Stranded Rna Segments Of Bacteriophage Φ6, James L. Van Etten, A. K. Vidaver, R. K. Koski, J. P. Burnett

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The three double-stranded ribonucleic acid (dsRNA) segments of the bacteriophage φ6 were isolated and shown to have similar melting temperatures and base compositions. RNA: RNA hybridization experiments with the isolated segments eliminate the possibility that the two smaller dsRNA segments arise from a cleavage of the large dsRNA segment. The two smaller RNA segments reanneal rapidly even at low temperatures; in contrast, the large dsRNA reannealed only at higher temperatures. Evidence is also presented which suggests that the dsRNAs may contain a short single-stranded RNA tail.

Nutrition Of Sheep Grazing Foothill Big Game Range In Spring, Kurt J. Kotter May 1974

Nutrition Of Sheep Grazing Foothill Big Game Range In Spring, Kurt J. Kotter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sheep with esophageal fistulas were used to determine the daily intake, nutritive content and digestibility of forage at three periods and two stocking intensities during the spring of 1972 on a typical foothill range in northern Utah.

Heavy grazing under a season-long regime did not influence the concentrations of dietary chemical components when compared to moderate grazing; however, it did depress the digestibility of cellulose and organic matter. There was a significant decline in the dietary chemical components due to forage maturation. Digestibility of organic matter and cellulose were significantly higher in the early spring as compared to late spring. …
