Broadacre Pest Control After Ddt, P J. Michael Jan 1987

Broadacre Pest Control After Ddt, P J. Michael

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

DDT may no longer be applied to broadacre crops grown in Western Australia. It is being replaced by other more effective chemicals and with new methods of pest control. DDT was the most effective chemical for the control of several major broadacre pests in this State and farmers may well wonder why this change was necessary and how they will manage without DDT.

Clover Infertility Of Sheep : Continuing Problem, N R. Adams, Keith Croker Jan 1987

Clover Infertility Of Sheep : Continuing Problem, N R. Adams, Keith Croker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Some varieties of subterranean clover, notably Dinninup, Dwalganup and Yarloop, contain compounds which act like the female sex hormone oestrogen. These plant oestrogens, or "phyto-oestrogens", interfere with the fertility of sheep and depress the percentage of lambs born.

Over the past 10 years our understanding of clover infertility has increased, and we can now gauge the extent of this residual problem. In fact, there is a widespread but low-level incidence of infertility which does not greatly affect individial farms but which has an important impact on the State's sheep production.

Seasonal Variation In Leaf Hydrocyanic Acid Potential Of Low- And High-Dhurrin Sorghums, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, B. E. Johnson Jan 1987

Seasonal Variation In Leaf Hydrocyanic Acid Potential Of Low- And High-Dhurrin Sorghums, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, B. E. Johnson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The KSS and N32 sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) lines are low and high, respectively, in the hydrocyanic acid potential (HCN-p) of mature leaves. This difference is conditioned primarily by a single pair of alleles. The main objective of this study was to determine, at various stages of plant growth and various times during the growing season, the HCN-p of upper leaves and tillers of field-grown plants of these two parental lines and of two low-HCN-p F F3 lines derived from crosses between KS8 and N32. The four entries were grown in a randomized complete block design with …

Evaluation Of New Pasture Legume Species In Terms Of Summer Feeding Value And Effects On Wool Production., S E. Flecker, C W. Thorn, J. B. Rowe, Tess Casson

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

86KA71, Pasture legumes improve the feeding value of summer pastures in a mediterranean-type environment by maintaining the protein intake of grazing animals over the dry summer period, much of which comes from the ingestion of legume burr (A.D. Wilson and N.L. Hindley, 1968). Some of the most important species of pasture legumes to have been released commercially are Trifolium subterraneum (sub.clover), Medicago truncatula (barrel medic) and Medicago polymorpha (burr medic) (D.B. Purser, G.B. Taylor and W.J. Collins, 1987). What little information is available on the feeding value of these species suggests that barrel medic pod (H. Brownlee, 1973) and dry …

Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Cylindrical Inclusion Body Protein, M. K. Brakke, E. M. Ball, Y. H. Hsu, W. G. Langenberg Jan 1987

Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Cylindrical Inclusion Body Protein, M. K. Brakke, E. M. Ball, Y. H. Hsu, W. G. Langenberg

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A protein of apparent molecular weight 66000 was purified from wheat plants infected with wheat streak mosaic virus. Antiserum to this protein, labelled with gold, specifically stained cylindrical inclusions in ultrathin sections of virus-infected cells. Antiserum to the Mr 66000 protein did not react with capsid protein in Western blots, nor did antiserum to capsid protein react with the Mr 66000 protein. Both antiserum reacted with homologous antigens. The concentration of the Mr 66000 protein in extracts from infected leaves was about 100 µg per g of leaves, which is higher than the usual concentration of virions.

Characteristics Of Successful Competitors: An Evaluation Of Potential Growth Rate In Two Cold Desert Tussock Grasses, Eissenstat D. M., Caldwell M. M. Jan 1987

Characteristics Of Successful Competitors: An Evaluation Of Potential Growth Rate In Two Cold Desert Tussock Grasses, Eissenstat D. M., Caldwell M. M.

Aspen Bibliography

Within the first few weeks after seedling emergence, Agropyron desertorum, a more competitive tussock grass, had a much higher mean relative growth rate (RGR) than Agropyron spicatum, a very similar, but less competitive species. However, beyond the early seedling stage, the two grasses had a remarkably similar whole-plant RGR in hydroponic culture and aboveground RGR in glasshouse soil, if root temperatures were above approximately 12° C. At soil temperatures between 5 and 12° C, A. desertorum exhibited a 66% greater aboveground RGR than A. spicatum (P < 0.05). Both species responded similarly to warming soil temperatures. In the field, however, tiller growth rates were generally similar. Neither species showed marked tiller elongation until a couple of weeks after snowmelt, by which time soil temperatures, at least to a depth of 10 cm, were above 12° C for a significant portion of the day. Above-ground biomass accumulation over a three-year period indicated that both grasses had similar potential growth rates whereas Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana, a common neighbor planted in the same plots, had a much greater potential growth rate. The greater competitive ability of adult A. desertorum, as compared to A. spicatum, cannot be attributed to appreciable differences in potential growth rates.

Short Communications: Localization Of Oviductal Sperm-Storage Tubules In The American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius), Murray R. Bakst, David M. Bird

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Sperm-storage tubules (SST) are discrete tubular invaginations of the bird's oviduct epithelium located in the anterior end of the vaginal folds, a region generally referred to as the uterovaginal junction (UVJ). [We prefer to refer to the UVJ sperm-storage sites collectively as the SST (originally used by Mero and Ogasawara 1970) because SST accurately describes their function and structure.] Of the 27 recognized orders of birds, SST have been identified histologically only in selected species of Charadriiformes and Procellariformes (Hatch 1983), Galliformes (Fujii and Tamura 1963), Anseriformes (Pal 1977), and Passeriformes (Bray et al. 1975). Whether SST are structures common …

Field Peas In The Wheatbelt, R J. French Jan 1987

Field Peas In The Wheatbelt, R J. French

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Plantings of lupins in the Western Australian wheatbelt increased rapidly in the late 1970s and early 980s as improved varieties became available and farmers realised the benefits to be gained from growing grain legumes. Grain legumes are useful not simply as alternative cash crops. They provide 'fixed' atmospheric nitrogewn to following cereal crops and act as a cleaning crop to break cereal disease cycles. They are also valuable sheep feed.

In 1975, throughout the wheatbelt, the Department of Agriculture began a comparison of several alternative legumes. The crops included field peas, faba beans, chickpeas, lentills and various vetches. Field peas …

Research And Development Strategies For A Sustainable Agriculture, Charles A. Francis Jan 1987

Research And Development Strategies For A Sustainable Agriculture, Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

"Food production and rural income are two prime concerns of Third World governments. Increased food production and greater food security are goals which countries strive to achieve through agricultural development. The technologies generated by research, commonly known as green revolution methods, have provided an impetus to food production in some favored zones where resources are available to take advantage of this production package. New varieties, productive and responsive to fertilizer, have bought time while countries work to control population growth and develop agriculture and industry" (Francis and Harwood, 1985).

The pioneering work of the International Agricultural Research Centers has been …

Cyanogenic Plants Of Illinois, Kevin E. Aikman Jan 1987

Cyanogenic Plants Of Illinois, Kevin E. Aikman

Masters Theses

Cyanogenesis in 50 species of vascular plants collected from east central Illinois was studied by examining 10 populations of each species. Each population consisted of 30 individuals, which gave an over all sample size of 300 plants per species. Herbarium specimens from the Stover Herbarium of Eastern Illinois University (EIU) were also tested for the presence of cyanide. More than 20,000 specimens were tested for this study which included cultivated plants, introduced weeds, and native plant species. The speed and degree of the HCN reaction as well as the specific plant part tested were included to give a more specific …
