Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 Increases The Excitability Of Pre-Motor Glutamatergic Dorsal Vagal Complex Neurons From Hyperglycemic Mice, Jordan B. Wean, Bret N. Smith

Physiology Faculty Publications

Intracerebroventricular administration of the protein hormone fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) to the hindbrain produces potent antidiabetic effects in hyperglycemic mice that are likely mediated through a vagal parasympathetic mechanism. FGF19 increases the synaptic excitability of parasympathetic motor neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) from hyperglycemic, but not normoglycemic, mice but the source of this synaptic input is unknown. Neurons in the area postrema (AP) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) express high levels of FGF receptors and exert glutamatergic control over the DMV. This study tested the hypothesis that FGF19 increases glutamate release in the DMV …

Predictive Accuracy Of The Nelson Equation Via Bodpod Compared To Commonly Used Equations To Estimate Resting Metabolic Rate In Adults, Bryndan Lindsey, Daniel Shookster, Joel Martin, Nelson Cortes

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(2): 1166-1177, 2021. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is considered the gold standard for assessing resting metabolic rate (RMR). However, many people do not have access to IC devices and use prediction equations for RMR estimation. Equations using fat free mass (FFM) as a predictor have been developed to estimate RMR, as a strong relationship exists between FFM and RMR. One such equation is the Nelson equation which is used by the BodPod (BP). Yet, there is limited evidence whether the Nelson equation is superior to other common equations to predict RMR. To examine the agreement between …

Mitigation Strategies For Central Nervous System Oxygen Toxicity In Rodents: Ketone Metabolic Therapy And Mitochondrial Antioxidant Therapy, Christopher Manuel Hinojo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) is a frequently encountered condition in undersea medicine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The risk of CNS oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) seizures limits its use in hyperbaric medicine and limits bottom time for diving operations. In this study, we sought to understand the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in two mitigation strategies for CNS-OT; ketone metabolic therapy (KMT), which is known to delay onset of CNS-OT seizures, and mitochondria targeted antioxidant therapy (MitoTAT), which has never been tested under HBO2 conditions. We specifically focused on superoxide anions, one of the early reduction products of molecular oxygen, and …

Central Nervous System Associated With Light Perception And Physiological Responses Of Birds, Seong Kang Oct 2021

Central Nervous System Associated With Light Perception And Physiological Responses Of Birds, Seong Kang

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Environmental light that animal receives (i.e., photoperiod and light intensity) has recently been shown that it affects avian central nervous system for the physiological responses to the environment by up or downregulation of dopamine and serotonin activities, and this, in turn, affects the reproductive function and stress-related behavior of birds. In this study, the author speculated on the intriguing possibility that one of the proposed avian deep-brain photoreceptors (DBPs), i.e., melanopsin (Opn4), may play roles in the dual sensory-neurosecretory cells in the hypothalamus, midbrain, and brain stem for the behavior and physiological responses of birds by light. Specifically, the author …

Fusion And Beyond: Satellite Cell Contributions To Loading-Induced Skeletal Muscle Adaptation, Kevin A. Murach, Christopher S. Fry, Esther E. Dupont-Versteegden, John J. Mccarthy, Charlotte A. Peterson

Center for Muscle Biology Faculty Publications

Satellite cells support adult skeletal muscle fiber adaptations to loading in numerous ways. The fusion of satellite cells, driven by cell-autonomous and/or extrinsic factors, contributes new myonuclei to muscle fibers, associates with load-induced hypertrophy, and may support focal membrane damage repair and long-term myonuclear transcriptional output. Recent studies have also revealed that satellite cells communicate within their niche to mediate muscle remodeling in response to resistance exercise, regulating the activity of numerous cell types through various mechanisms such as secretory signaling and cell–cell contact. Muscular adaptation to resistance and endurance activity can be initiated and sustained for a period of …
