Utah's Food Processing Industry Can Manufacture Products From Cbd-Containing Lipids That Have Superior Texture And Consistency, Joseph Cooney, Isaac Hilton
Research on Capitol Hill
Sophomore Joseph is an Honors student and Undergraduate Research Fellow studying physics. Freshman Isaac, of Kaysville, studies civil and environmental engineering. Joseph and Isaac are exploring how cannabinoids impact the way that lipids function. A common way CBD is packaged is within foods, where it is frequently added to fats like cocoa butter or palm oil, and as the market for such products increase producers need to understand CBD will change the behavior of the fats they are using. In addition to this work, Joseph also volunteers for a physics lab. “Undergraduate research has let me explore fields outside my major …

The Surface Conditions Of Spacecraft Panels May Significantly Affect Spacecraft Survivability, Trace Taylor
Research on Capitol Hill
USU junior Trace grew up in Brigham City and studies physics and electrical engineering. The majority of spacecraft failure is caused by electron charging on the outer surfaces of the craft. Additionally, contaminants on the craft can cause a film over surface panels, increasing the problem. Trace is studying how roughness on panels can mitigate this contamination as it affects the charging that can lead to craft failure. This research will help determine what optimal panel materials should be used in future spacecraft construction. Trace started research almost as soon as he came to campus in his freshman year, and …

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a unique non-linear optical effect that can be used to investigate chemical states of molecules at surfaces/interfaces. By the use of soft X-rays, SHG gains element selectivity through the inner-core excitation resonance. However, it is challenging to observe SHG signals separately from the second-order light generated from the undulator. Here, we report a new ellipsometry method for soft X-ray SHG to suppress the contribution of second-harmonic radiation from the light source. Through measurements of a GaAs(100) crystal, we demonstrate that pure SHG signals can be obtained for the horizontally polarized component. The present method is …

Automatized approaches for nanoparticle synthesis and characterization represent a great asset to their applicability in the biomedical field by improving reproducibility and standardization, which help to meet the selection criteria of regulatory authorities. The scaled-up production of nanoparticles with carefully defined characteristics, including intrinsic morphological features, and minimal intra-batch, batch-to-batch, and operator variability, is an urgent requirement to elevate nanotechnology towards more trustable biological and technological applications. In this work, microfluidic approaches were employed to achieve fast mixing and good reproducibility in synthesizing a variety of gold nanostructures. The microfluidic setup allowed exploiting spatial resolution to investigate the growth evolution …

Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy …

The idea of research is a representation of the nonlinear pseudo-random generators using state-space equations that is not based on the usual description as shift register synthesis but in terms of matrices. Different types of nonlinear pseudo-random generators with their algorithms have been applied in order to investigate the output pseudo-random sequences. Moreover, two examples are given for conciliated the results of this representation.

Flexible Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Assisted With Lead-Free Perovskite Halide, Judy Fan
Physics Faculty Research
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have shown promising alternative to Si-based counterparts due to low-cost, abundant raw materials, and non-vacuum processing. Here, we report a solution-based process to create flexible DSSCs on aluminum foils. Mesoporous TiO2 electrode was directly deposited on Al foil through spin casting. After post-thermal annealing, the resultant samples render optical smooth, crack-free, and large nanocrystalline thin films. The as-prepared double-layer porous TiO2 thin film was incorporated with a porphyrin dye followed by a perovskite halide salt Cs2SnI6, as the hole transport material, replacing liquid electrolyte. A transparent conducting plastic sheet was …

To a lay person reading about history of physics, it may sound as if the progress of physics comes from geniuses whose inspiration leads them to precise equations that -- almost magically -- explain all the data: this is what Newton did with mechanics, this is what Schroedinger did with quantum physics, this is what Einstein did with gravitation. However, a deeper study of history of physics shows that in all these cases, these geniuses did not start from scratch -- they formalized ideas that first appeared in imprecise ("fuzzy") form. In this paper, we explain -- on the qualitative …

Physics and Engineering Science
Nuclear reactions heat and cool the crust of accreting neutron stars and need to be understood to interpret observations of X-ray bursts and long-term cooling in transiently accreting systems. It was recently suggested that previously ignored neutron transfer reactions may play a significant role in the nuclear processes. We present results from full nuclear network calculations that now include these reactions and determine their impact on crust composition, crust impurity, heating, and cooling. We find that a large number of neutron transfer reactions indeed occur and impact crust models. In particular, we identify a new type of reaction cycle that …
Metagratings For Efficient Wavefront Manipulation, Younes Ra'di, Andrea Alù
Metagratings For Efficient Wavefront Manipulation, Younes Ra'di, Andrea Alù
Advanced Science Research Center
Recently, it was revealed that conventional gradient metasurfaces are fundamentally limited on their overall efficiency to reroute the impinging waves towards arbitrary directions in reflection and transmission. Their efficiency is particularly limited for extreme wavefront transformations. In addition, due to the fastly varying impedance profiles that these surfaces require, they usually need high-resolution fabrication processes, limiting their applicability and overall bandwidth of operation. To address these issues, the concept of metagrating was recently introduced, enabling engineered surfaces capable of manipulating light with unitary efficiency even in the limit of extreme wavefront manipulation. Metagratings are periodic or locally periodic arrays operated …

Effect Of As Flux On Inas Submonolayer Quantum Dot Formation For Infrared Photodetectors, K. D. Vallejo, P. J. Simmonds
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The performance of infrared photodetectors based on submonolayer quantum dots was investigated as a function of the arsenic flux. All the devices showed similar figures of merit and a very high specific detectivity above 1 × 1011 cm Hz1/2/W at 12 K, despite the fact that cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy images pointed out a strong reduction in the density of such nanostructures with decreasing arsenic flux. This contrast is a consequence of the small size and low In content of the submonolayer quantum dots that lead to a strong delocalization of the electrons wave function and, therefore, …

Connections Between Atmospheric Blocking, General Circulation, And Weather Extremes In A Hierarchy Of Models And Various Climates, Veeshan Narinesingh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The field of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) includes the study of both the motion and thermodynamic aspects of the atmosphere. These properties are of particular importance because they directly influence both local and large-scale weather and climate and are associated with various phenomena. One phenomena that is particularly influential is atmospheric blocking. Atmospheric blocks are persistent, quasi-stationary anticyclones (a.k.a. high-pressure systems) that occur in the atmosphere and disrupt the flow. Blocks are known to induce heat extremes and cold spells, as well as steer storms and cause numerous types of hazards. Yet despite the hazards associated with blocks, our current …

Charge Transport And Spin Dynamics Of Color Centers In Diamond, Damon Daw
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Solid state defects in diamond are promising candidates for room temperature quantum information processors (1, 3, 5). Chief among these defects is the nitrogen vacancy center (‘NV center’ or ‘NV’). The NV has long coherence times (at 300K) and its state is easily initialized, manipulated and read out (5). However, the outstanding issue of entangling NV centers in a scalable fashion, at room temperature remains a challenge. This thesis presents experimental and theoretical work aimed at achieving this goal by developing the ‘flying qubit’ framework in (1). This method for remote entanglement utilizes a charge carrier (initialized into a definite …

The controlled creation of dark-bright (DB) soliton trains in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is a topic of ongoing interest. In this work we generalize earlier findings on the creation of dark soliton trains in single-component BECs [A. Romero-Ros, Phys. Rev. A 103, 023329 (2021)2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.103.023329] to two-component BECs. By choosing suitable filled box-type initial configurations (FBTCs) and solving the direct scattering problem for the defocusing vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions we obtain analytical expressions for the DB soliton solutions produced by a general FBTC. It is found that the size of the initial box and the amount of …

The unique response of amorphous ionic oxides to changes in oxygen stoichiometry is investigated using computationally intensive ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, comprehensive structural analysis, and hybrid density-functional calculations for the oxygen defect formation energy and electronic properties of amorphous In2O3-x with x = 0-0.185. In marked contrast to nonstoichiometric crystalline nanocomposites with clusters of metallic inclusions inside an insulating matrix, the lack of oxygen in amorphous indium oxide is distributed between a large fraction of undercoordinated In atoms, leading to an extended shallow state for x < 0.037, a variety of weakly and strongly localized states for 0.074 < x < 0.148, and a percolation-like network of single-atom chains of metallic In-In bonds for x > 0.185. The calculated carrier concentration increases from 3.3 x 10 …

We Present the Results of an Experiment Investigating the Generation of High-Order Harmonics by a Femtosecond Near-Infrared (NIR) Laser Pulse in the Presence of an Extreme Ultraviolet (XUV) Field Provided by a Free-Electron Laser (FEL), a Process Referred to as XUV-Assisted High-Order Harmonic Generation (HHG). Our Experimental Findings Show that the XUV Field Can Lead to a Small Enhancement in the Harmonic Yield When the XUV and NIR Pulses overlap in Time, while a Strong Decrease of the HHG Yield and a Red Shift of the HHG Spectrum is Observed When the XUV Precedes the NIR Pulse. the Latter Observations …

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption are used to characterize Cu2+ (3d9) and Cu3+ (3d8) ions in Cu-doped β-Ga2O3. These Cu ions are singly ionized acceptors and neutral acceptors, respectively (in semiconductor notation, they are Cu− and Cu0 acceptors). Two distinct Cu2+ EPR spectra are observed in the as-grown crystals. We refer to them as Cu2+(A) and Cu2+(B). Spin-Hamiltonian parameters (a g matrix and a 63,65Cu hyperfine matrix) are obtained from the angular dependence of each spectrum. Additional electron-nuclear double resonance …

We present results from our analysis of the Hydra I cluster observed in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) as part of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). These WALLABY observations cover a 60-square-degree field of view with uniform sensitivity and a spatial resolution of 30 arcsec. We use these wide-field observations to investigate the effect of galaxy environment on HI gas removal and star formation quenching by comparing the properties of cluster, infall and field galaxies extending up to ∼5R200 from the cluster centre. We find a sharp decrease in the HI-detected fraction of infalling galaxies at a …

This study investigated the toxicity of a new imidazole compound, 1-(1,4,5-triphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-naphthalen-2-ol, through the evaluation of selected oxidative stress markers and antioxidants. Both male and female D. melanogaster (3–5 days old) were fed a diet containing the imidazole derivative (20, 50, and 100 mg IMZ/kg diet) for five days. After cessation of imidazole treatment, half the population of the imidazole-exposed flies was homogenized for biochemical assays, while the other half of the flies was allowed to have a normal diet for an additional five days to see if any induced effect would be resolved. Imidazole derivatives did not significantly …

Coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that appeared because of the newest version of discovered coronavirus. The advent and rapid spread of this disease over the world necessitated a concerted effort to contain and eradicate it. Computer Tomography (CT) imaging and X-Ray images are considered as one of the important medical examinations used for disease diagnosis. To speed up and confirm the correctness of the medical diagnosis, many artificial intelligence techniques and machine learning methods are proposed. In this paper, a new and efficient proposed system is introduced to extract appropriate and meaningful features for CT scans …

A simple green chemistry approach was used to synthesize β-carotene from edible carrot without using solvent and heat. In this study, beta-carotene was extracted from edible carrots through a natural extraction method with several physical technical steps. The extracted sample was isolated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A β-carotene peak was detected from HPLC with an absorbance maximum (2.135 mAU). The absorption of UV-Visible spectrum indicated that beta-carotene absorbs most strongly between 230-300 and 400-500 nm. The functional groups, namely, C=C (1649 cm-1), =C-H (900-900 cm-1) vibrations of antisymmetric deformation of CH3 groups and CH …

The crime rate in India is considerably increasing day by day. Consequently, the data associated with crime is also increasing, opening doors for data-driven approaches to these data to extract insightful knowledge, which can help police and other law enforcement organizations of the country in crime control and prevention. Crime prediction using machine learning algorithms on crime data can predict region-wise crime counts. In this paper, a machine learning-based soft computing regression analysis approach for Indian Crime Data Analysis (ICDA) is proposed. Different regression algorithms, namely, Simple Linear Regression (SLR), Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Decision Tree Regression (DTR), Support Vector …

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is responsible for ~8% of all man-made CO2 emissions. Unfortunately, due to the continuous increase in the number of construction projects, and since virtually all projects depend on hardened cement from the hydration of OPC as the main binding material, the production of OPC is not expected to decrease. Alkali-activated cement produced from the alkaline activation of byproducts of industries, such as iron and coal industries, or processed clays represents a potential substitute for OPC. However, the interaction of the reaction products of AAC with corrosive ions from the environment, such as Cl-, …

Hydrogels from biopolymers are readily synthesized, can possess various characteristics for different applications, and have been widely used in biomedicine to help with patient treatments and outcomes. Polysaccharides, polypeptides, and nucleic acids can be produced into hydrogels, each for unique purposes depending on their qualities. Examples of polypeptide hydrogels include collagen, gelatin, and elastin, and polysaccharide hydrogels include alginate, cellulose, and glycosaminoglycan. Many different theories have been formulated to research hydrogels, which include Flory-Rehner theory, Rubber Elasticity Theory, and the calculation of porosity and pore size. All these theories take into consideration enthalpy, entropy, and other thermodynamic variables so that …

This paper describes the design process of a low-frequency sound absorptive panel composed of differently tuned Helmholtz resonators (HRs), considering size and fabrication constraints relevant for applications in the building sector. The paper focuses on cylindrical and spiral resonators with embedded necks that are thin and can achieve high absorption. the mutual interaction between the resonators was modeled based on the radiation impedance method and it plays a key component in enhancing the absorption performance of the array. The differential evolution search algorithm was used to design the resonators and modify their mutual interaction to derive the absorption performance of …

Deformed No-Core Shell Model And Symplectic Effective Field Theory, David Kekejian
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Most nuclei are deformed! This simple fact has been established since Bohr and Mot- telson, and successfully demonstrated from first principles by nuclear structure calculations carried out using the ab-initio Symmetry-Adapted No-Core Shell Model (SA-NCSM) us- ing realistic interactions. This simple fact has been the main driver towards understanding the underlying physics; namely, that symplectic symmetry describes deformation and is a dominant symmetry in all nuclei independent of A (nucleon number) and of the realistic interaction used. These two simple observations laid the foundation of this thesis work to explore the applications of symplectic symmetry towards defining a deformed symplectic …
