Determination Of Vortex Locations In A 2x2 Array Of Josephson Junctions For Topological Quantum Computation, Casey L. Kowalski Mar 2022

Determination Of Vortex Locations In A 2x2 Array Of Josephson Junctions For Topological Quantum Computation, Casey L. Kowalski

Theses and Dissertations

A large barrier to practical quantum computation exists in the form of qubit decoherence, which leads to high noise and error when implementing quantum algorithms. A potential solution to this problem is the use of topologically-protected Majorana-based qubits, as their nonlocal nature and unique non-abelian exchange statistics render them virtually immune to decoherence while still allowing the state to be easily manipulated. For such a qubit to be constructed, it is essential to know the locations of the Majorana-hosting vortices in the system. This work presents a solution for the formation locations of vortices in a 2x2 superconducting island array, …

Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson Mar 2022

Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson

Theses and Dissertations

Lithium compounds such as lithium hydride (LiH) and anhydrous lithium hydroxide (LiOH) have various applications in industry but are highly reactive when exposed to moisture and CO2. These reactions create new molecular forms, including compounds such as lithium oxide (Li2O), lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH ·H2O), and lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). These new compounds degrade the effectiveness in applications using these compounds. The negative effects induced by new lithium compounds creates a need for the ability to characterize the in-growth of such compounds. To study these in-growths, this work will present environmental …

Light Curve Test Of Grb 200716c As A Gravitationally Lensed Echo, Oindabi Mukherjee, Robert J. Nemiroff Mar 2022

Light Curve Test Of Grb 200716c As A Gravitationally Lensed Echo, Oindabi Mukherjee, Robert J. Nemiroff

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

A gravitational lens can imprint distinct features on the light curve of a gamma-ray burst (GRB). Most prominently, when creating multiple images, the light curves for all images should be identical, within a scale factor in amplitude. For GRB images that are bright enough to have significant counts in multiple time bins, the similarity of the light curves can be assessed with a straightforward χ2 test. In response to a recent claim that the two pulses in GRB 200716C are lensed images of the same pulse, such a χ2 test was computed. The test indicated that the likelihood …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) span the approximate mass range 100−105 M⊙, between black holes (BHs) that formed by stellar collapse and the supermassive BHs at the centers of galaxies. Mergers of IMBH binaries are the most energetic gravitational-wave sources accessible by the terrestrial detector network. Searches of the first two observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo did not yield any significant IMBH binary signals. In the third observing run (O3), the increased network sensitivity enabled the detection of GW190521, a signal consistent with a binary merger of mass ∼150 M⊙ providing direct evidence of …

Non-Adiabatic Perturbations And Non-Gaussianity During Inflation: Affine Gravity Approach, Isaac Bamwidhi Mar 2022

Non-Adiabatic Perturbations And Non-Gaussianity During Inflation: Affine Gravity Approach, Isaac Bamwidhi

Theses

This thesis is concerned with providing a complete study of non-Gaussianity and entropy perturbations that are sourced by multiple fields nonminimally coupled to gravity. The study will be performed in the framework of the two important formulations of gravity, namely: purely metric (general relativity) and purely affine formulation – where the metrical structure results from the dynamics of the spacetime affine connection. We shall employ a covariant formalism in our framework and demonstrate that it leads to a curved field space which can produce a conspicuous departure from the purely metric gravity. This work is expected, not only to derive …

The Correlation Between The Effects Of Strain And Stochiometric Coefficient On The Magnetic Properties Of Srsno₃ And Sr₃Sno, Amal Sameh Kashcoul

Theses

Perovskites (ABX3) are one of the most prominent families of crystalline alloys have received excellent research attention globally because of their diverse multi-functionalities and the interesting physics underpinning them. On the other hand, antiperovskites (X3BA) are electronically inverted perovskite derivates, yet they are not an insignificant class of functional materials. Antiperovskites, inheriting the flexible structural characteristics of perovskites and rich in cations at X sites, display unusual chemical and physical properties. The SrSnO3 is a distinctive perovskite oxide in that it possesses a higher electron conductivity despite its sizeable optical band gap. This dissertation has …

Bandgap Tuning Of Mose2 And Wse2 Monolayers Through Alloying And Substitution: An Ab Initio Study, Shahida Maqsood

Theses

2D materials attracted considerable interest in the research community following the first report in 2004 on the preparation of graphene by simple micromechanical exfoliation of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. For example, single-layer Molybdenum Di selenide (MoSe2) and Tungsten Di selenide (WSe2) transistors with on/off ratios of 108 and ultra-low standby power dissipation were demonstrated. Graphene electrodes have been used to develop fully transparent resistive memories to suppress unwanted surface effects that occur in oxide memory devices. Photodetectors based on MoSe2 with few layers have shown excellent photodetection properties. Phototransistors based on WSe2 monolayers exhibit …

Development Of Effectual Substrates For Sers By Nanostructurs-Coated Porous Silicon, Fatima J. Moaen, Hammad R. Humud, Fouad G. Hamzah

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The current paper provides an efficient method for making active and effectual substrates used for detecting molecules by improving surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). These substrates were fabricated using nanostructure-coated porous silicon. The nanostructures were prepared through the electrical exploding wire (EEW) technique. The silver nanowires (AgNWs) were coated with a polydopamine (PDA) layer to form an AgNWs@PDA colloidal solution. Then, the Ag wire was electrically exploded in the colloidal solution to form the (AgNWs@PDA@AgNPs) plasmonic nanostructures as a metal-insulator-metal. The effect of the plasmonic nanostructures’ morphologies on the absorptances spectra and SERS activities were studied utilising Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) dye …

Hyperbolic Shear Polaritons In Low-Symmetry Crystals, Nikolai C. Passler, Xiang Ni, Guangwei Hu, Joseph R. Matson, Giulia Carini, Martin Wolf, Mathias Schubert, Andrea Alù, Joshua D. Caldwell, Thomas G. Folland, Alexander Paarmann Feb 2022

Hyperbolic Shear Polaritons In Low-Symmetry Crystals, Nikolai C. Passler, Xiang Ni, Guangwei Hu, Joseph R. Matson, Giulia Carini, Martin Wolf, Mathias Schubert, Andrea Alù, Joshua D. Caldwell, Thomas G. Folland, Alexander Paarmann

Advanced Science Research Center

The lattice symmetry of a crystal is one of the most important factors in determining its physical properties. Particularly, low-symmetry crystals offer powerful opportunities to control light propagation, polarization and phase. Materials featuring extreme optical anisotropy can support a hyperbolic response, enabling coupled light–matter interactions, also known as polaritons, with highly directional propagation and compression of light to deeply sub-wavelength scales. Here we show that monoclinic crystals can support hyperbolic shear polaritons, a new polariton class arising in the mid-infrared to far-infrared due to shear phenomena in the dielectric response. This feature emerges in materials in which the dielectric tensor …

In this work, we present polarization profiles for 23 millisecond pulsars observed at 820 and 1500 MHz with the Green Bank Telescope as part of the NANOGrav pulsar timing array. We calibrate the data using Mueller matrix solutions calculated from observations of PSRs B1929+10 and J1022+1001. We discuss the polarization profiles, which can be used to constrain pulsar emission geometry, and present both the first published radio polarization profiles for nine pulsars and the discovery of very low-intensity average profile components ("microcomponents") in four pulsars. We obtain the Faraday rotation measures for each pulsar and use them to calculate the …

Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts Addition Of Indoles To Tertiary Allylic Alcohols, Bryan H. Wakefield, Romie Barnes, Traeannah Brown, Ashley M. Jones, Victoria A. Knotts, Christina Martinetti

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

An intermolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indole and tertiary allylic alcohols has been developed. The allylic alcohols were synthesized using a two-step procedure, then exposure of these alcohols to diphenyl phosphate facilitated the desired annulation reaction. This reaction tolerated a variety of indole substitutions to yield 1H,2H,3H,4H-pyrido[1,2-a]indoles.

We investigate the stellar populations for a sample of 161 massive, mainly quiescent galaxies at z obs = 0.8 with deep Keck/DEIMOS rest-frame optical spectroscopy (HALO7D survey). With the fully Bayesian framework Prospector, we simultaneously fit the spectroscopic and photometric data with an advanced physical model (including nonparametric star formation histories, emission lines, variable dust attenuation law, and dust and active galactic nucleus emission), together with an uncertainty and outlier model. We show that both spectroscopy and photometry are needed to break the dust-age-metallicity degeneracy. We find a large diversity of star formation histories: although the most massive (M > 2 …

The two sources AGC 226178 and NGVS 3543, an extremely faint, clumpy, blue stellar system and a low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal, are adjacent systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster. Both have been studied in detail previously, with it being suggested that they are unrelated normal dwarf galaxies or that NGVS 3543 recently lost its gas through ram pressure stripping and AGC 226178 formed from this stripped gas. However, with Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging, we demonstrate that the stellar population of NGVS 3543 is inconsistent with being at the distance of the Virgo cluster …

Quite a few molecules do not form stable anions that survive the time needed for their detection; their electron affinities (EA) are either very small or negative. How does one measure the EA if the anion cannot be observed? Or, at least, can one establish lower and upper bounds to their EA? We propose two approaches that provide lower and upper bounds. We choose the phenanthrene (Ph) molecule whose EA is controversial. Through competition between helium evaporation and electron detachment in HenPh- clusters, formed in helium nanodroplets, we estimate the lower bound of the vertical detachment energy …

The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is of substantial use in remote sensing, scene generation, and computer graphics, to describe optical scatter off realistic surfaces. This paper begins by summarizing our prior work in relating wave optics and geometric optics models, culminating with the Modified Cook-Torrance (MCT) model. The MCT model is evaluated here against aluminum, Infragold, and silver paint at various wavelengths in the IR. In each case, the MCT model is shown to outperform a standard microfacet model. Then, this paper shows a non-trivial method of computing the primary new term, the polarization factor Q. This optimization …

Effect Of Interfacial Atomic Mixing On The Thermal Conductivity Of Multi-Layered Stacking Structure, Yingguang Liu, Xinqiang Xue, Guoliang Ren, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-layered stacking structures and atomic mixing interfaces were constructed. The effects of various factors on the thermal conductivity of different lattice structures were studied by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, including the number of atomic mixing layers, temperature, total length of the system, and period length. The results showed that the mixing of two and four layers of atoms can improve the thermal conductivities of the multi-layer structure with a small total length due to a phonon "bridge" mechanism. When the total length of the system is large, the thermal conductivity of the multi-layer structure with atomic mixing interfaces decreases significantly …

Maximum Entropy And Constraints In Composite Systems, John D. Ramshaw Feb 2022

Maximum Entropy And Constraints In Composite Systems, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The principle of maximum entropy (PME), as expounded by Jaynes, is based on the maximization of the Boltzmann-Gibbs-Shannon (BGS) entropy subject to linear constraints. The resulting probability distributions are of canonical (exponential) form. However, the rationale for linear constraints is nebulous, and probability distributions are not always canonical. Here we show that the correct noncanonical distribution for a system in equilibrium with a finite heat bath is implied by the unconstrained maximization of the total BGS entropy of the system and bath together. This procedure is shown to be equivalent to maximizing the BGS entropy of the system alone subject …

Laws Of Nature As Constraints, Emily Adlam Feb 2022

Laws Of Nature As Constraints, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The laws of nature have come a long way since the time of Newton: quantum mechanics and relativity have given us good reasons to take seriously the possibility of laws which may be non-local, atemporal, ‘all-at-once,’ retrocausal, or in some other way not well-suited to the standard dynamical time evolution paradigm. Laws of this kind can be accommodated within a Humean approach to lawhood, but many extant non-Humean approaches face significant challenges when we try to apply them to laws outside the time evolution picture. Thus for proponents of non-Humean approaches to lawhood there is a clear need for a …
