Computational Methods For Propagation Of Optical Fields With The Angle-Impact Wigner Function, Jeremy Wittkopp Aug 2022

Computational Methods For Propagation Of Optical Fields With The Angle-Impact Wigner Function, Jeremy Wittkopp

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In designing an optical setup for an experiment, one usually turns to simulations first in order to model the propagation of light through the proposed system. This way, the experimenter can determine if the system is operating as intended. In order for these simulations to be useful, they need to properly describe the propagation of light. In order to simplify calculations, most contemporary software makes assumptions on the nature of the light being propagated. Specifically, simulations typically consider optical fields that are beam-like (i.e., most of the rays comprising the field deviate only slightly in angle from the beam's primary …

Arrayed Waveguide Lens For Beam Steering, Mostafa Honari-Latifpour, Ali Binaie, Mohammad Amin Eftekhar, Nicholas Madamopoulos, Mohammad-Ali Miri Aug 2022

Arrayed Waveguide Lens For Beam Steering, Mostafa Honari-Latifpour, Ali Binaie, Mohammad Amin Eftekhar, Nicholas Madamopoulos, Mohammad-Ali Miri

Publications and Research

Integrated planar lenses are critical components for analog optical information processing that enable a wide range of applications including beam steering. Conventional planar lenses require gradient index control which makes their on-chip realization challenging. Here, we introduce a new approach for beam steering by designing an array of coupled waveguides with segmented tails that allow for simultaneously achieving planar lensing and off-chip radiation. The proposed arrayed waveguide lens is built on engineering the evanescent coupling between adjacent channels to realize a photonic lattice with an equi-distant ladder of propagation constants that emulates the continuous parabolic index profile. Through coupled-mode analysis …

We study the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity for currents directed along all crystallographic axes of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe2. We focus particularly on an accurate determination of the resistivity along the c axis (ρc) by using a generalized Montgomery technique that allows extraction of crystallographic resistivity components from a single sample. In contrast to expectations from the observed highly anisotropic band structure, our measurement of the absolute values of resistivities in all current directions reveals a surprisingly nearly isotropic transport behavior at temperatures above Kondo coherence, with ρc∼ρb∼2ρa, that evolves to reveal qualitatively distinct behaviors on cooling. The temperature …

One of the most promising avenues in 2D materials research is the synthesis of antiferromagnets employing 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnets. However, it has proven challenging, due in part to the complicated fabrication process and undesired adsorbates as well as the significantly deteriorated ferromagnetism at atomic layers. Here, the engineering of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer exchange coupling between atomically thin yet ferromagnetic CrTe2 layers in an ultra-high vacuum-free 2D magnetic crystal, Cr5Te8 is reported. By self-introducing interstitial Cr atoms in the vdW gaps, the emergent AFM ordering and the resultant giant magnetoresistance effect are induced. A large negative magnetoresistance …

Materials Design For Energy Applications Using Ab- Initio Calculations, Hind Hemaidee Alqurashi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The structural, dynamical, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of rock-salt and wurtzite Cd1-xZnxO alloys, VTiRhZ (Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) and ZrTiRhZ (Ge, Sn) quaternary Heusler alloys (QHAs) were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. From these calculations, the alloys were identified as potential materials for future thermoelectric applications. Furthermore, the magnetic and spin-polarization properties of these QHAs were investigated. The total magnetic moments were found to be integer values for all QHAs. In addition, all studied QHAs except VTiRhAl possess a half-metallic behavior with a 100% spin-polarization. The half-metallic ferromagnetic behavior makes them promising …

Quantum Dots In Two-Dimensional Tungsten Diselenide, Jeb Allen Michael Stacy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work focuses on the investigation of single and double quantum dots in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide tungsten diselenide (WSe_2) as a means to evaluate the valley degree of freedom as a potential qubit and ambipolar tungsten diselenide monolayers as single photon sources. Gate-defined quantum dots in monolayer and bilayer WSe_2 were fabricated and characterized. Single dot devices are gated from above and below the WSe_2 to accumulate a hole gas. Temperature dependence of Coulomb-blockade peak height is consistent with single-level transport. Excited-state transport in the quantum dot is shown for both monolayer and bilayer devices. Magnetic field dependence of …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the search for a sustainable method to meet increasing energy needs, solar energy emerges as an underutilized, plentiful resource. Solar intermittency and requirements for transportation necessitate storing solar energy in the form of chemical bonds via artificial photosynthesis. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting generates hydrogen fuel from solar energy and water. A semiconducting material that successfully meets the complex requirements for building an industrially scalable PEC device has yet to emerge. This is leading to a reevaluation of materials previously overlooked within PEC research, mainly materials with limitations such as minimal charge carrier mobility and propensity to corrosion under illumination …

Nanoscale Studies Of The Ferroelectric And Electromechanical Properties Of Hafnia-Based Capacitors, Pratyush Buragohain

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The work presented in this dissertation aims to provide nanoscopic insights into the electrical and electromechanical behavior of the recently discovered ferroelectric HfO2 or hafnia-based capacitors. Hafnia-based ferroelectrics are highly promising for technological applications due to compatibility with the existing Si technology. To realize the full potential of hafnia, however, requires comprehensive understanding of its properties. In this regard, this dissertation hopes to bridge a gap between an understanding of the nanoscopic and macroscopic properties of hafnia by performing combined high-resolution piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and pulse switching studies.

More specifically, the dynamics of domain nucleation and wall motion …

Probing The Equation Of State Of Neutron Stars With Heavy Ion Collisions, Om Bhadra Khanal Aug 2022

Probing The Equation Of State Of Neutron Stars With Heavy Ion Collisions, Om Bhadra Khanal

Dissertations

The equation of state (EOS) is a fundamental property of nuclear matter, important for studying the structure of systems as diverse as the atomic nucleus and the neutron star. Nuclear reactions, especially heavy-ion collisions in the laboratories, can produce the nuclear matter similar to those contained in neutron stars. The density and the momentum dependence of the EOS of asymmetric nuclear matter, especially the symmetry energy term, is widely unconstrained. Finding appropriate constrains, especially at higher densities of the nuclear matter, requires the development of new devices, new experimental measurements as well as advances in theoretical understanding of nuclear collisions …

Time-Dependent Photoionization Modeling Of Warm Absorbers In Active Galactic Nuclei, Dev Raj Sadaula Aug 2022

Time-Dependent Photoionization Modeling Of Warm Absorbers In Active Galactic Nuclei, Dev Raj Sadaula

Dissertations

Warm absorber spectra are bound-bound and bound-free absorption features, seen in the X-ray and UV spectra from many active galactic nuclei (AGN). The widths and centroid energies of these features indicate they occur in outflowing gas moving with hundreds to thousands of km/s. Depending upon the energy and momentum of the outflow, it can affect the gas within the host galaxy. Thus, warm absorbers’ mass and energy budgets are of great interest. Estimates for these properties depend on models that connect the absorption features' observed strengths with the density, composition, and ionization state of the absorbing gas. Such models assume …

Ultrashort Pulse Laser Filamentation Electrical And Optical Diagnostic Comparison, James E. Wymer Aug 2022

Ultrashort Pulse Laser Filamentation Electrical And Optical Diagnostic Comparison, James E. Wymer

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Results presented here examine the effect of changing gas pressure on the radio frequency (RF) emissions of an ultrashort pulse laser filament plasma and how those emissions vary longitudinally in the laser focal region. We use a WR284 rectangular waveguide with a 1.5 cm hole that allows the beam through. A 3.2 GHz microwave signal is emitted in the waveguide, and signals are received through a waveguide-to-coax antenna connected to an HP8470B Schottky diode. By enabling and disabling the 3.2 GHz signal, we measure both the self-emitted RF from a USPL filament and subsequently the degree of attenuation a filament …

This dissertation summarizes an investigation of the polarization-related electronic transport behavior in the ferroelectric thin films and two-dimensional (2D) materials heterostructures using Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) techniques.

The polarization-related resistive switching in hafnium oxide thin films-based ferroelectric tunnel junction has been demonstrated by employing semiconducting MoS2 as a top electrode. We explored a coupling between the semiconducting properties of MoS2 and the polarization of Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 resulted in an enhanced tunneling electroresistance effect of up to 3 orders of magnitude. These results provide a possible pathway for the fabrication of …

Fermion-Induced Electroweak Symmetry Non-Restoration Via Temperature-Dependent Masses, Yu Hang Ng Aug 2022

Fermion-Induced Electroweak Symmetry Non-Restoration Via Temperature-Dependent Masses, Yu Hang Ng

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Standard Model (SM) and many extensions of SM predict that the electroweak (EW) symmetry was restored in the early universe when the temperature was around 160 GeV. However, recent studies showed that the interactions between some new scalars and SU(2)_L Higgs doublet(s) can cause the EW symmetry to remain broken at temperatures well above the EW scale in certain renormalizable extensions of SM. In this study, we found that new fermions from renormalizable models can also induce this EW symmetry non-restoration effect, provided that they have the appropriate temperature-dependent masses. These masses can arise naturally from the interactions between the …

Chirality In Quantum Field Theory And Its Role In The Standard Model And Beyond, Timothy Blake Watson Aug 2022

Chirality In Quantum Field Theory And Its Role In The Standard Model And Beyond, Timothy Blake Watson

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Chirality as a symmetry of particle physics occupies a unique role in the standard model. It arises from general space-time principles yet remains central to the formulation of local gauge theories. This work explores the complexities arising from a physically comprehensive treatment of this topic. We present the origins of the property from first principles by deriving the chiral Dirac equation (CDE). We demonstrate how the resulting chiral degrees of freedom for spin-1/2 objects may be employed in constructing composite chiral objects through the Bargmann-Wigner formalism, leading to novel couplings. We then consider means by which the degrees of chiral …

Absolute Quantification Of Tc-99m Activity Distributions Using A Planar Molecular Breast Imaging Commercial System, Benjamin P. Lopez

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Molecular breast imaging (MBI) uses two dedicated-breast semiconductor detectors to visualize the preferential uptake of technetium-99m-sestamibi (99mTc-sestamibi) by breast cancer cells relative to surrounding benign breast tissues. Clinically, MBI is used primarily as a supplementary tool to standard-of-care mammography because of its improved detection of breast cancers, especially in women with mammographically-dense breasts. Because of a lack of image corrections, MBI applications are currently limited to qualitative evaluations of relative pixel intensities between image regions with suspected lesions and normal tissue.

The objective of this dissertation was to use Monte Carlo simulations to better characterize the MBI imaging …

Development Of Graphical Models And Statistical Physics Motivated Approaches To Genomic Investigations, Yashwanth Lagisetty Aug 2022

Development Of Graphical Models And Statistical Physics Motivated Approaches To Genomic Investigations, Yashwanth Lagisetty

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Identifying genes involved in disease pathology has been a goal of genomic research since the early days of the field. However, as technology improves and the body of research grows, we are faced with more questions than answers. Among these is the pressing matter of our incomplete understanding of the genetic underpinnings of complex diseases. Many hypotheses offer explanations as to why direct and independent analyses of variants, as done in genome-wide association studies (GWAS), may not fully elucidate disease genetics. These range from pointing out flaws in statistical testing to invoking the complex dynamics of epigenetic processes. In the …

Phonon Dispersions Of Nonmagnetic Bcc Iron At High Pressures From Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics And Harmonic Ensemble Lattice Dynamics, Valeria Itzel Arteaga Muniz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Numerous computational and experimental studies on the crystal structure of metals nearthe melt line, indicate the body-centered cubic (bcc) structure can be favored over other crystal phases at lower temperatures [1]-[4] and even in cases in which other crystal structures are thermodynamically more stable, bcc may nucleate first from the melt, at rapid cooling rates [5]. Iron (Fe) is a polymorph metal, with a bcc ferromagnetic structure at ambient conditions. Even though the phase diagram of Fe is well known at relatively low pressures, there is currently no consensus on the crystal structure of Fe below the melt line at …

Optimization Of Quantum Circuits Using Spin Bus Multiqubit Gates For Quantum Dots, Miguel Gonzalo Rodriguez Aug 2022

Optimization Of Quantum Circuits Using Spin Bus Multiqubit Gates For Quantum Dots, Miguel Gonzalo Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The current conventional method for designing quantum circuits is to employ a number of single- and two-qubit gates, which often necessitate a lengthy sequence, imposing severe constraints on quantum coherence and quantum circuit complexity. Coupling multiple spin qubits to a common spin chain can result in a generically multiqubit gate. It is demonstrated that the multiqubit gate can substantially reduce the depth of quantum circuits and establish multiqubit entanglement considerably more quickly.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transition And Electronic Structure Changes In Equiatomic Fev, Homero Reyes Pulido Aug 2022

Pressure-Induced Phase Transition And Electronic Structure Changes In Equiatomic Fev, Homero Reyes Pulido

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Classical molecular dynamics methods can accurately describe a broad set of many-atomssystems. Although more economical, the results given by this framework lack the precision capable of density functional theory (DFT). Therefore, the structural stability of the B2 phase of a body-centered-cubic iron-vanadium (FeV) alloy using DFT on the electronic structure level is analyzed to verify and further explain classical results obtained by our group in this same alloy. Using Quantum Espresso and Phonopy for the computational simulations, the plotted band structure, electronic density of states (eDOS), phonon dispersions, charge density, and Fermi surfaces for various compressed unit cells are presented. …

Toward A Conceptual Approach To The Coriolis Force: Cataloging Intuitive Knowledge Elements In Intermediate Physics Learners, Jared B. Arnell Aug 2022

Toward A Conceptual Approach To The Coriolis Force: Cataloging Intuitive Knowledge Elements In Intermediate Physics Learners, Jared B. Arnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In Physics, the topic of the Coriolis force is often confusing and difficult to teach. I conducted a series of interviews with undergraduate physics students to understand how they would use their prior knowledge and personal experiences to interact with and navigate through a new conceptual teaching approach for the Coriolis force. Many students applied their intuitive understanding of balance to interpret and make predictions about the Coriolis force. Some students displayed a strong conviction that rotating objects will naturally get pulled outward, which suggests that this impression may be a useful tool for novice physics learners to use in …
