The branching fractions of the decays B+ → ηl+νl and B+ → η0 lþνl are measured, where l is either an electron or a muon, using a data sample of 711 fb−1 containing 772 × 106 BB̅ pairs collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. To reduce the dependence of the result on the form factor model, the measurement is performed over the entire q2 range. The resulting branching fractions are B(B+ → ηlþνl)=(2.83 ± 0.55(stat.) ± 0.34(syst.) )× 10 …

We use panoramic optical spectroscopy obtained with the Very Large Telescope/MUSE to investigate the nature of five candidate extremely isolated low-mass star-forming regions (Blue Candidates; hereafter, BCs) toward the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Four of the five (BC1, BC3, BC4, and BC5) are found to host several H ii regions and to have radial velocities fully compatible with being part of the Virgo cluster. All the confirmed candidates have mean metallicity significantly in excess of that expected from their stellar mass, indicating that they originated from gas stripped from larger galaxies. In summary, these four candidates share the properties of …

We discuss five blue stellar systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster, analogous to the enigmatic object SECCO 1 (AGC 226067). These objects were identified based on their optical and UV morphology and followed up with H i observations with the Very Large Array (and Green Bank Telescope), Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (on the Very Large Telescope) optical spectroscopy, and Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These new data indicate that one system is a distant group of galaxies. The remaining four are extremely low mass (M * ∼ 105 M ⊙), are dominated by young blue stars, have highly …

We investigate constraints on early dark energy (EDE) using ACT DR4, SPT-3G 2018, Planck polarization, and restricted Planck temperature data (at ℓσ preference (Δχ2= −16.2 for three additional degrees of freedom) for EDE over Λ CDM. The EDE contributes a maximum fractional energy density of fEDE(zc) = 0.163(+0.047)/(−0.04) at a redshift zc = 3357±200 and leads to a CMB inferred value of the Hubble constant H0 = 74.2(+1.9)/(−2.1) km/s/Mpc. We find that Planck and ACT DR4 data provide the majority of the improvement in χ2, and that the inclusion …

Polarization Angle Dependence Of Vertically Propagating Radio-Frequency Signals In South Polar Ice, Davez Bensson, Ilya Kravchenko, Krishna Nivedita

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

To better understand the effect of ice properties on the science reach of radio experiments designed to measure ultrahigh energy neutrinos (UHEN), we recently considered the timing and amplitude characteristics of radio-frequency (RF) signals propagating along multi-kilometer, primarily horizontal trajectories through cold Polar ice at the South Pole. That analysis indicated satisfactory agreement with a model of ice birefringence based on ice crystal (ĉ-axis) data culled from the South Pole Ice Core Experiment (SPICE). Here we explore the geometrically complementary case of signals propagating along primarily vertical trajectories, using extant data from the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) experiment, …

Plasmonic Nanomaterials-Based Point-Of-Care Biosensors, Rohit Gupta

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Point-of-care (POC) biosensors, although rapid and easy-to-use, are orders magnitude less sensitive than laboratory-based tests. Further they are plagued by poor stability of recognition element thus limiting its widespread applicability in resource-limited settings. Therefore, there is a critical need for realizing stable POC biosensors with sensitivity comparable to gold-standard laboratory-based tests. This challenge constitutes the fundamental basis of this dissertation work– to expand access to quality and accurate biodiagnostic tools. At the heart of these solutions lies plasmonic nanoparticles which exhibit unique optical properties which are attractive for label-free and labelled biosensors.Firstly, we improve the stability and applicability of label-free …

Evaluation And Clinical Implementation Of A Dual-Energy Ct Stopping-Power Ratio Mapping Technique For Proton-Therapy Treatment Planning, Maria Jose Medrano Matamoros

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Proton radiotherapy has the potential to treat tumors with better conformal dose distribution than competing modalities when the rapid dose falloff at the end of the proton-beam range is correctly aligned to the edge of the clinical target volume (CTV). However, its clinical potential is dependent on the accurate localization of the Bragg-peak position from predicted stopping-power ratio maps. The method that is most commonly used in today’s clinical practice for predicting stopping-power ratio (SPR) consists of a stoichiometric calibrationtechnique based on single-energy CT (SECT) for direct estimation of patient-specific SPR distribution from vendor-reconstructed Hounsfield Unit (HU) images. Unfortunately, this …

Development Of Intravital Microscopy For Brain Imaging With Improved Spatiotemporal Coverage And Contrast, Yifeng Zhou

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Capitalizing on the Brownian motion of red blood cells, the distinct optical absorption spectra of oxy-hemoglobin and deoxy-hemoglobin, and the blood flow-induced signal decorrelation, multi-parametric photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) is capable of quantifying concentration of hemoglobin (CHb), blood oxygen saturation (sO2), and hemodynamics at the microscopic level via statistical, spectroscopic, and correlation analyses. Multi-parametric PAM has found broad biomedical applications. In fact, there are still much room to further improve the performance and imaging capability of multi-parametric PAM to meet the ever-increasing demanding requirements of biomedical research. To date, there are two main obstacles that prevent multi-parametric PAM from being more …

Advancing The Portability, Field Of View, And Spatiotemporal Resolution Of Multi-Parametric Photoacoustic Microscopy, Fenghe Zhong

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Capable of structural, functional, molecular, and metabolic imaging with high spatial resolution in vivo, photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) is an emerging tool in biomedical research. Further, recent advances in multi-parametric acquisition and analysis make PAM uniquely capable of simultaneously mapping the total concentration of hemoglobin (CHb), oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (sO2), and blood flow speed. However, there are multiple major limitations, including, the large footprint, low imaging speed, limited imaging contrast, and insufficient axial resolution, which impedance its applications in basic and translational research. In this dissertation, I presented potential solutions to overcome the limitations above. In the first part of this …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The van der Waals magnets CrX3 (X = I, Br, and Cl) exhibit highly tunable magnetic properties and are promising candidates for developing novel two-dimensional (2D) magnetic devices such as magnetic tunnel junctions and spin tunneling transistors. Previous studies of CrCl3 have mainly focused on mechanically exfoliated samples. Controlled synthesis of high quality atomically thin flakes is critical for their technological implementation but has not been achieved to date. Here, we report the growth of large CrCl3 flakes with well-defined facets down to monolayer thickness (~0.6 nm) via the physical vapor transport technique. Long stripes of tri-layer samples …

We present a method to fabricate handcrafted thermoelectric devices on standard office paper substrates. The devices are based on thin films of WS2, Te, and BP (P-type semiconductors) and TiS3 and TiS2 (N-type semiconductors), deposited by simply rubbing powder of these materials against paper. The thermoelectric properties of these semiconducting films revealed maximum Seebeck coefficients of (+1.32 ± 0.27) mV K−1 and (−0.82 ± 0.15) mV K−1 for WS2 and TiS3, respectively. Additionally, Peltier elements were fabricated by interconnecting the P- and N-type films with graphite electrodes. A thermopower value up to 6.11 mV K−1 was obtained when the Peltier …

College of Life Sciences Faculty Papers

Nanotechnology has become increasingly important in modern society, and nanoparticles are routinely used in many areas of technology, industry, and commercial products. Many species of nanoparticle (NP) are typically synthesized using toxic or hazardous chemicals, making these methods less environmentally friendly. Consequently, there has been growing interest in green synthesis methods, which avoid unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals and reduce harmful waste. Synthesis methods which utilize food waste products are particularly attractive because they add value and a secondary use for material which would otherwise be disposed of. Here, we show that spent coffee grounds (SCGs) that have already been …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) suffers from poor mechanical properties that limit its application in the bio-medical field. In this study, PMMA was reinforced with zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopar-ticles; subsequently, the hardness, porosity, biocompatibility, bacterial adhesion, and colonization of the reinforced PMMA with various oxide nanoparticles were characterized. The results of this study indicated that reinforced material inhibits bacterial growth and decreases bacterial adhesion by decreasing porosity and increasing PMMA hardness. Based on the findings, 3 wt% PMMA-ZrO2 and 3 wt% PMMA-ZrO2 -TiO2 composites significantly inhibited bacterial growth and adherence while maintaining hemolysis PT and INR and enhancing …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Throughout the last few years, the world is witnessing the so-called age of social media, as there is a complete dependence on these sites for following up on events and activities. The problem is that the misinformation or fake news is always released at the appropriate time, so this false news spreads quickly and takes a very wide resonance. Although several studies are performed to determine English fake news, the identification of Arabic misinformation remains underdeveloped. This study aims to build an improved learning model for detecting fake news in the Arabic language. Unlike previous studies that depended on analyzing …

Using Rufdata For The Evaluation Of Assessment Authenticity: An Overview, Linda Moore

Other Resources

Programmatic evaluations are used by higher education institutions as part of their quality assurance and enhancement processes in the assessment and monitoring of academic programmes to ensure the maintenance of the standards, integrity and viability of these programmes. The type of evaluation most suited to this purpose is a utilisation-focused formative evaluation, which should be carried out in a structured and systematic manner. Saunder’s (2000) RUFDATA framework is a useful tool that can be used to both systematically plan and monitor the activities associated with such an evaluation project, being suited to projects at both small (e.g., module), medium (e.g., …

We present a directed search for continuous gravitational wave (CW) signals emitted by spinning neutron stars located in the inner parsecs of the Galactic Center (GC). Compelling evidence for the presence of a numerous population of neutron stars has been reported in the literature, turning this region into a very interesting place to look for CWs. In this search, data from the full O3 LIGO-Virgo run in the detector frequency band [10,2000]  Hz have been used. No significant detection was found and 95% confidence level upper limits on the signal strain amplitude were computed, over the full search band, with …

Magnetic Skyrmions Unwrapped, Alexey Kovalev Aug 2022

Magnetic Skyrmions Unwrapped, Alexey Kovalev

Alexey Kovalev Papers

Experiments with chiral magnets may hold the key to a better understanding of fundamental aspects of transformations between different skyrmionic states, necessary for magnetic memory and logic applications to become a reality.

With the aim of developing computing devices that operate with low power dissipation, scientists have been pursuing the idea of encoding information in magnetic states. Specifically, skyrmions, which can be thought of as whirl-like states of magnetic moments, are promising candidates for this purpose. The advantage of skyrmions lies in their topological protection, a property implying that only a ‘global’ system modification can erase a skyrmion. Realizations of …

Renormalization Scheme Dependence Of Β-Functions In Lorentz-Violating Quantum Field Theory, Sapan Karki, Brett David Altschul Aug 2022

Renormalization Scheme Dependence Of Β-Functions In Lorentz-Violating Quantum Field Theory, Sapan Karki, Brett David Altschul

Faculty Publications

Effective quantum field theories that allow for the possibility of Lorentz symmetry violation can sometimes also include redundancies of description in their Lagrangians. Explicit calculations in a Lorentz-violating generalization of Yukawa theory show that when this kind of redundancy exists, different renormalization schemes may lead to different expressions for the renormalization group β-functions, even at only one-loop order. However, the renormalization group scaling of physically observable quantities appears not to share this kind of scheme dependence.

The 'Quantal Newtonian' First Law: A Complementary Perspective To The Stationary-State Quantum Theory Of Electrons, Viraht Sahni Aug 2022

The 'Quantal Newtonian' First Law: A Complementary Perspective To The Stationary-State Quantum Theory Of Electrons, Viraht Sahni

Publications and Research

A complementary perspective to the Göttingen-Copenhagen interpretation of stationary-state quantum theory of electrons in an electromagnetic field is described. The perspective, derived from Schrödinger-Pauli theory, is that of the individual electron via its equation of motion or ‘Quantal Newtonian’ First Law. The Law is in terms of ‘classical’ fields experienced by each electron: the sum of the external and internal fields vanishes. The external field is a sum of the electrostatic and Lorentz fields. The internal field is a sum of fields’ representative of Pauli and Coulomb correlations; kinetic effects; electron density; and internal magnetic component. The energy is obtained …

We report on a search for compact binary coalescences where at least one binary component has a mass between 0.2  M⊙ and 1.0  M⊙ in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data collected between 1 April 2019 1500 UTC and 1 October 2019 1500 UTC. We extend our previous analyses in two main ways: we include data from the Virgo detector and we allow for more unequal mass systems, with mass ratio q≥0.1. We do not report any gravitational-wave candidates. The most significant trigger has a false alarm rate of 0.14  yr−1. This implies an upper limit on the merger rate …

Qcd Corrections In Tqγ Production At Hadron Colliders, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Nodoka Yamanaka

Faculty Articles

We study QCD corrections for the associated production of a single top quark and a photon (tqγ production) at hadron colliders. We calculate the NLO cross section at LHC and future collider energies for a variety of kinematical cuts, and we estimate uncertainties from scale dependence and from parton distributions. We also calculate differential distributions in top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity as well as photon energy. Finally, we study higher-order corrections from soft-gluon emission for this process, and we provide approximate NNLO (aNNLO) results for the cross section and top-quark differential distributions. We also compare our calculations with recent measurements from …
