Inferring Binary Parameters With Dual-Line Gravitational Wave Detection From Tight Inspiraling Double Neutron Stars, Wen-Fan Feng, Jie-Wen Chen, Tan Liu, Yan Wang, Soumya D. Mohanty
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Neutron star (NS) binaries can be potentially intriguing gravitational wave sources, with both high- and low-frequency radiation from the possibly aspherical individual stars and the binary orbit, respectively. The successful detection of such a dual-line source could provide fresh insights into binary geometry and NS physics. In the absence of electromagnetic observations, we develop a strategy for inferring the spin-orbit misalignment angle using the tight dual-line double NS system under the spin-orbit coupling. Based on the four-year joint detection of a typical dual-line system with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna and Cosmic Explorer, we find that the misalignment angle and …

The present study is to compare the radon activity concentration in agricultural and virgin soils from various locations along the Little Zab River (LZR) in the Iraqi Kurdistan region. We conducted 24 measurements of soil samples using long tube techniques equipped with an electric radon detector called RAD7 in our research. The findings revealed that the radon activity concentrations ranged from 37.3 ± 7.52 Bq m-3 to 298.25 ± 50.09 Bq m-3 in virgin soil, and from 33.03 ± 10.85 Bq m-3 to 320.25 ± 34.62 Bq.m-3 in agriculture soil. The annual effective dose was also calculated to be from …

Wind turbine blade maintenance is expensive, dangerous, time-consuming, and prone to misdiagnosis. A potential solution to aid preventative maintenance is using deep learning and drones for inspection and early fault detection. In this research, five base deep learning architectures are investigated for anomaly detection on wind turbine blades, including Xception, Resnet-50, AlexNet, and VGG-19, along with a custom convolutional neural network. For further analysis, transfer learning approaches were also proposed and developed, utilizing these architectures as the feature extraction layers. In order to investigate model performance, a new dataset containing 6000 RGB images was created, making use of indoor and …

We use James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (NIRCam WFSS) and the Near-Infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release survey to measure rest-frame optical emission-line ratios of 155 galaxies at z < 2. The blind NIRCam grism observations include a sample of galaxies with bright emission lines that were not observed on the NIRSpec masks. We study the changes of the Hα, [O III]/Hβ, and [Ne III]/[O II] emission lines in terms of redshift by comparing to lower-redshift SDSS, CLEAR, and MOSDEF samples. We find a significant (>3σ) correlation between [O III]/Hβ with redshift, while [Ne III]/[O II] has a marginal (2σ) correlation with redshift. We compare [O III]/Hβ and [Ne III]/[O II] to stellar mass and Hβ SFR. We find that both emission-line ratios have a correlation with Hβ SFR and an anticorrelation with stellar mass across the redshifts 0 > z > 9. Comparison with MAPPINGS V models indicates that …

The flux ratios of gravitationally lensed quasars provide a powerful probe of the nature of dark matter. Importantly, these ratios are sensitive to small-scale structure, irrespective of the presence of baryons. This sensitivity may allow us to study the halo mass function even below the scales where galaxies form observable stars. For accurate measurements, it is essential that the quasar’s light is emitted from a physical region of the quasar with an angular scale of milliarcseconds or larger; this minimizes microlensing effects by stars within the deflector. The warm dust region of quasars fits this criterion, as it has parsec-size …

Improving The Proof Of The Born Rule Using A Physical Requirement On The Dynamics Of Quantum Particles, Yakir Aharonov, Tomer Shushi
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We propose a complete proof of the Born rule using an additional postulate stating that for a short enough time Δt between two measurements, a property of a particle will keep its values fixed. This dynamical postulate allows us to produce the Born rule in its explicit form by improving the result given in [1]. While the proposed postulate is still not part of the quantum mechanics postulates, every experiment obeys it, and it cannot be deduced using the standard postulates of quantum mechanics.

Spacetime Geometry Of Acoustics And Electromagnetism, Lucas Burns, Tatsuya Daniel, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Both acoustics and electromagnetism represent measurable fields in terms of dynamical potential fields. Electromagnetic force-fields form a spacetime bivector that is represented by a dynamical energy–momentum 4-vector potential field. Acoustic pressure and velocity fields form an energy–momentum density 4-vector field that is represented by a dynamical action scalar potential field. Surprisingly, standard field theory analyses of spin angular momentum based on these traditional potential representations contradict recent experiments, which motivates a careful reassessment of both theories. We analyze extensions of both theories that use the full geometric structure of spacetime to respect essential symmetries enforced by vacuum wave propagation. The …

Swarm intelligence (SI) methods are nature-inspired metaheuristics for global optimization that exploit a coordinated stochastic search strategy by a group of agents. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is an established SI method that has been applied successfully to the optimization of rugged high-dimensional likelihood functions, a problem that represents the main bottleneck across a variety of gravitational wave (GW) data analysis challenges. We present results from the first application of PSO to one of the most difficult of these challenges, namely the search for the Extreme Mass Ratio Inspiral (EMRI) in data from future spaceborne GW detectors such as LISA, Taiji, …

A large convection-cloud chamber has the potential to produce drizzle-sized droplets, thus offering a new opportunity to investigate aerosol-cloud-drizzle interactions at a fundamental level under controlled environmental conditions. One key measurement requirement is the development of methods to detect the low-concentration drizzle drops in such a large cloud chamber. In particular, remote sensing methods may overcome some limitations of in situ methods. Here, the potential of an ultrahigh-resolution radar to detect the radar return signal of a small drizzle droplet against the cloud droplet background signal is investigated. It is found that using a small sampling volume is critical to …

With varying hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentrations under three etching conditions, we presented a comparative study of the effects of both the ordered and randomly ternary mixed terminated Ti3C2Tx surfaces with a wide variation of O/OH/F stoichiometry on the thermodynamic stability and electronic properties. Regardless of the HF concentration, an OH-rich surface is found to be thermodynamically stable and the electrical conductivity of Ti3C2Tx is substantially affected by the OH concentration. The charge density difference and electron localization function demonstrated a significant electron localization at the hydroxyl group on the O/OH/F mixed terminated surface, which could yield a locally induced dipole …

Butterworth Filter To Reduce Reactivity Fluctuations, Daniel Suescún-Díaz, Geraldyne Ule-Duque, Luis E. Cardoso-Páez
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
In this study, we introduce the calculation of reactivity in nuclear reactors. The proposed method uses the Euler-Maclaurin series to approximate the integral in the inverse equation of point kinetics. The approximation is done with the first three terms, the first term represents the approximation of a zero-order sum, the second term the trapezoidal rule and the third term the first Bernoulli number. These three terms improve the approximation, along with an estimate of the neutron density using the prompt jump approximation. To reduce neutron density fluctuations, a second-order Butterworth filter for the reactivity calculation was implemented, which offers the …

We examine one of the standard loci for studying electromagnetic wave emission - the radiation from an oscillating electric dipole - in a model in which the electromagnetic sector is modified to include novel CPT- and Lorentz-violating propagation effects involving a preferred axial vector background. We evaluate the vacuum-birefringent radiation fields, including nonperturbative terms where appropriate. In general, the energy momentum carried by the fields in this model is known to have a complicated nonperturbative structure, which cannot be captured by naive power-series expansions in the components of the preferred background vector. However, we nevertheless find that at the lowest …

The decay or annihilation of dark matter particles may produce a steady flux of very-high-energy gamma rays detectable above the diffuse background. Nearby clusters of galaxies provide excellent targets to search for the signatures of particle dark matter interactions. In particular, the Virgo cluster spans several degrees across the sky and can be efficiently probed with a wide field-of-view instrument. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, due to its wide field of view and sensitivity to gamma rays at an energy scale of 300 GeV-100 TeV is well-suited for this search. In this paper, we study two extensions of the complex-valued Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) kernel and discuss their connections with Fock spaces in two different settings. First, we introduce the quaternionic Gaussian RBF kernel constructed using the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions. Then, we consider the case of Gaussian RBF kernels in several complex variables.

Energy And Angular Distributions In 250 Ev Electron And Positron Collisions With Argon Atom, K. Tőkési, Robert D. Dubois
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present energy and angular differential cross sections for single ionization in collisions between electrons and positrons with argon atoms at 250 eV. We treat the collision classically using the three-body approximation where the target atoms are described within the single active electron approximation using a Garvey model potential and only the outermost electron is involved in the collision dynamics. Our present classical trajectory Monte Carlo model is shown to describe the ionization cross sections reasonably well and agree with existing experimental data. We show that the energy distributions, both for electron and positron impact, have the same shape and …

Non-Hermiticity has emerged as a new paradigm for controlling coupled-mode systems in ways that cannot be achieved with conventional techniques. One aspect of this control that has received considerable attention recently is the encircling of exceptional points (EPs). To date, most work has focused on systems consisting of two modes that are tuned by two control parameters and have isolated EPs. While these systems exhibit exotic features related to EP encircling, it has been shown that richer behavior occurs in systems with more than two modes. Such systems can be tuned by more than two control parameters, and contain EPs …

Holographic optical elements (HOEs) have the potential to enable more compact, versatile, and lightweight optical designs, but many challenges remain. Volume HOEs have the advantage of high diffraction efficiency, but they present both chromatic selectivity and chromatic dispersion, which impact their use with wide spectrum light sources. Single-color light emitting diode (LED) sources have a narrow spectrum that reduces these issues and this makes them better suited for use with volume HOEs. However, the LED source size must be taken into consideration for compact volume HOE-LED systems. To investigate the design limits for compact HOE-LED systems, a theoretical and experimental …

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 reverse transcriptase (HIV-1 RT) plays a significant role in viral replication and is one of the targets for anti-HIV. However, a mutation in viral strains rapidly developed the resistance of the com-pounds to the protein, reducing the effectiveness of the inhibitors. This work seeks to utilize machine learning-based quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis in combination with molecular docking simulations to forecast the presence of active compounds derived from medicinal plants. Specifically, the objective is to identify com-pounds that have the potential to operate as inhibitors of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT), encompassing both wild-type and …

We propose and analyze a protocol for stabilizing a maximally entangled state of two noninteracting qubits using active state-dependent feedback from a continuous two-qubit half-parity measurement in coordination with a concurrent, noncommuting dynamical decoupling drive. We demonstrate that such a drive can be simultaneous with the measurement and feedback, while also playing a key part in the feedback protocol itself. We show that robust stabilization with near-unit fidelity can be achieved even in the presence of realistic nonidealities, such as time delay in the feedback loop, imperfect state-tracking, inefficient measurements, dephasing from 1/f-distributed qubit-frequency noise, and relaxation. We …

We present the main results from a long-term reverberation mapping campaign carried out for the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project (SAMP). High-quality data were obtained during 2015–2021 for 32 luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs; i.e., continuum luminosity in the range of 1044–46 erg s−1) at a regular cadence, of 20–30 days for spectroscopy and 3–5 days for photometry. We obtain time lag measurements between the variability in the Hβ emission and the continuum for 32 AGNs; 25 of those have the best lag measurements based on our quality assessment, examining correlation strength and the posterior lag distribution. The physical processes by which gas is accreted onto galaxies, transformed into stars, and then expelled from galaxies are of paramount importance to galaxy evolution studies. Observationally constraining each of these baryonic components in the same system, however, is challenging. Furthermore, simulations indicate that the stellar mass of galaxies is a key factor influencing CGM properties. Indeed, absorption lines detected against background quasars offer the most compelling way to study the cold gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). The MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey is composed of quasar fields covered with VLT/MUSE observations, comprising 32 H i absorbers at 0.2 < z < 1.4 and 79 associated galaxies, with available or upcoming molecular gas measurements from ALMA. We use a dedicated 40-orbit HST …

This paper proposes an alternative mechanism to solve the so-called missing pulsar problem, a standing paradox between the theoretical expectations about the number of pulsars that should exist in the galaxy center of the Milky Way and their absence in the observations. The mechanism is based on the transformation of incident γ rays into hybridized modes, known as axion-polaritons, which can exist inside highly magnetized quark stars with a quark matter phase known as the magnetic dual chiral density wave phase. This phase, which is favored over several other dense matter phases candidates at densities a few times nuclear saturation …

The equations of axial electric potentials are presented for our models of quarks and neutrinos as spinning composite structures where up to 3 basic elementary charges are on the axis or rotation and the other N charges are revolving about the axis. The axial potential functions at given point on the axis of rotation were calculated as the sum of electric potentials at that point from all the charges in the structure. We applied these general equations specifically to the models of two types of neutral particles (neutrinos), one with 2 like charges on the axis and the other with …

Two-Photon Absorption And Fluorescence Of Cadmium Sulfide, Jacob Goranson, Gregory J. Taft

The two-photon absorption and fluorescence of bulk cadmium sulfide were studied using 50-fs, 800-nm pulses from an unamplified Ti:sapphire laser. The fluorescence spectrum was measured to have a main peak at 522 nm, and the power of the fluorescence was shown to vary quadratically with the 800-nm beam power. This supports the theory that the fluorescence is excited by two-photon absorption and confirms previous work done with longer duration, higher energy excitation pulses. Pump-probe measurements provided additional confirmation of the two-photon absorption. Measured spectral broadening of the wings of the laser spectrum also was observed, which likely is due to …

Multi-Agent System For Portfolio Profit Optimization For Future Stock Trading, Usha Devi, Mohan R
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Stock trading highly contributes to the economic growth of the country. The stock trading objective is to earn profits with buy/sell/hold decisions on the set of stocks in the portfolio. The portfolio optimization problem is finding the decision sequence that leads to higher profit and lower risk. Portfolio optimization is challenging due to complex price history patterns and an uncertain environment. Incorrect decisions in stock trading lead to massive losses. The proposed Multi-Agent System for Portfolio Profit Optimization (MASPPO) aims to optimize trading profit and reduce risk with accurate predictions. The proposed model integrates the Fuzzy c-means with the Deep …

Theses and Dissertations
Although understanding the effect of the gamma-ray on cement-based materials is essential for many applications, such as the concrete contaminate of nuclear reactors or the storage of radioactive waste in cement-based waste forms, such understanding is still not fully developed. The importance of having such an understanding is becoming of utmost importance, especially with calls to extend the lifetime of nuclear power plants, and also due to some recent incidents of failures of the concrete structure in the nuclear fields. In this work, the details of preparing three molecular models as a representative structure of the main binding phase of …

Despite being widely used for high-resolution spectral analysis and quantifying low activity in natural samples, the operations and data analysis of High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detectors are seldom fully automated due to the excessive costs associated with commercially available automatic sample changing systems. This paper introduces the design and implementation of a cost-effective, customized remote gamma-ray spectra collection system centered around the HPGe detector coupled to a cosmic-ray veto background reduction device. The HPGe detector system, equipped with a Lynx DSA, is seamlessly integrated with an economically viable automatic sample changer. This sample vial changer is controlled by a …

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is an important biomarker for indicating many brain diseases, such as stroke and traumatic brain injury. Therefore, the development of real-time CBF measures in the clinic is desired, and many techniques have been developed to measure CBF. However, the current standard techniques, including positron emission tomography (PET), arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL-MRI), and computed tomography (CT) perfusion are limited to the high instrument cost, massive size, and the requirement of ionizing radiation, and thus are not able to map CBF at the bedside. Furthermore, these techniques offer only snapshots due to scanner logistics. An …

Eye lens α-crystallin has been shown to become increasingly membrane-bound with age and cataract formation; however, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated the membrane interactions of α-crystallin throughout the development of cataracts in separated cortical membrane (CM) and nuclear membrane (NM) from single human lenses. In this study, four pairs of human lenses from age-matched male and female donors and one pair of male lenses ranging in age from 64 to 73 years old (yo) were obtained to investigate the interactions of α-crystallin with the NM and CM throughout the progression of cortical cataract (CC) and nuclear cataract (NC) …
