3F4 Hypergeometric Functions As A Sum Of A Product Of 2F3 Functions, Jack C. Straton Mar 2024

3F4 Hypergeometric Functions As A Sum Of A Product Of 2F3 Functions, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper shows that certain 3F4 hypergeometric functions can be expanded in sums of pair products of 2F3 functions, which reduce in special cases to 2F3 functions expanded in sums of pair products of 1F2 functions. This expands the class of hypergeometric functions having summation theorems beyond those expressible as pair-products of generalized Whittaker functions, 2F1 functions, and 3F2 functions into the realm of pFq functions where p < q for both the summand and terms in the series. In addition to its intrinsic value, this result has a specific application in calculating the response of the atoms to laser stimulation in the Strong Field Approximation.

Single Particle Analysis Of Operation Roller Coaster Environmental Samples, Caleb J. Sapp Mar 2024

Single Particle Analysis Of Operation Roller Coaster Environmental Samples, Caleb J. Sapp

Theses and Dissertations

The release of plutonium and other actinides into the environment following a nuclear detonation or accident, poses a health risk to biological systems. The spread, or transportation of that plutonium and its daughter products through environmental and meteorological means increases the potential affect and inherent danger within the surrounding area. In the 1960’s, a study was conducted in a joint effort by the US and Great Britain to collect information regarding the spread of plutonium released into the environment through a sub-critical detonation. Soil samples from these tests were collected by the USAF in 2015, approximately 50 years after these …

Global Empirical Model Of Sporadic-E Occurrence Rates, Eli V. Parsch Mar 2024

Global Empirical Model Of Sporadic-E Occurrence Rates, Eli V. Parsch

Theses and Dissertations

Encompassing the Earth, the ionosphere presents unique challenges to modern communication, navigation, and surveillance technologies. Intense ionization enhancements known as sporadic-E (Es), can degrade and disrupt signals in unpredictable ways. Much work has been done to understand this phenomenon and more recent efforts have attempted to model its behavior and impacts. However, there have been limited efforts at modeling global Es occurrence rates (OR) at high time resolutions. This study develops a global empirical model of blanketing sporadic-E (fbEs) occurrence rates using a Karhunen-Lo´eve Expansion (KLE) of global fbEs OR climatologies built with Global Positioning System radio occultations (GPS-RO) and …

Michigan Tech Publications

Analyses are given on four recent gravitational millilensing claims on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs): GRB 081122A, GRB 081126A, GRB 110517B, and GRB 210812A. Two tests, a light curve similarity test and a hardness similarity test, compare different temporal sections of a single GRB to see if they are statistically similar. The hardness similarity test shows that the ratio between the second and the first emission episodes in each energy channel differed from the same ratio averaged over all energy channels at above 90 per cent confidence level in GRB 081122A. Additionally, the light curve similarity test applied to GRB 081122A, GRB …

Scale Invariance And Self-Similarity In Physics Provide A Unified Framework For Classifying Phases Of Matter And Dynamical Properties Near Equilibrium In Both Classical And Quantum Systems. This Paradigm Has Been Further Extended To Isolated Many-Body Quantum Systems Driven Far From Equilibrium, For Which The Physical Observables Exhibit Dynamical Scaling With Universal Scaling Exponents. Universal Dynamics Appear In A Wide Range Of Scenarios, Including Cosmology, Quark–gluon Matter, Ultracold Atoms And Quantum Spin Magnets. However, How The Universal Dynamics Depend On The Symmetry Of The Underlying Hamiltonian In Non-Equilibrium Systems Remains An Outstanding Challenge. Here We Report On The Classification Of Universal …

Open-Inquiry Opens Doors To Intriguing Optics Experiments At Home: A Case Study, Paul R. Destefano, Ralf Widenhorn

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

[This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Instructional labs: Improving traditions and new directions.] This manuscript presents a case study of an introductory physics student who, during the remote learning conditions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, found inspiration within a new, openinquiry, project-based, laboratory curriculum designed at Portland State University. The phenomenon investigated by the study subject was intriguing to both the student and the lab instructors for its unfamiliar and instructive optical effect: a ring-shaped pattern or halo created by a laser diffusely reflected in a shallow body of water. Drawing on classwork and interview responses, this …

We recently built the G4Jy-3CRE catalog of extragalactic radio sources. This catalog lists 264 powerful radio sources selected with similar criteria to those of the revised Third Cambridge Catalog, but visible from the Southern Hemisphere. A literature search revealed that 119 sources in the G4Jy-3CRE catalog (i.e., 45%) lack a firm spectroscopic redshift measurement. Here, we present a campaign aimed at acquiring optical spectra of G4Jy-3CRE sources and measuring their redshifts. We used single-slit observations obtained with the Víctor Blanco Telescope, the New Technology Telescope, the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, and the 2.1 m telescope of the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional …

Trapping And Scattering Of A Multiflagellated Bacterium By A Hard Surface, Alexander P. Petroff, Schuyler Mcdonough Mar 2024

Trapping And Scattering Of A Multiflagellated Bacterium By A Hard Surface, Alexander P. Petroff, Schuyler Mcdonough

Physics

Thiovulum majus, which is one of the fastest known bacteria, swims using hundreds of flagella. Unlike typical pusher cells, which swim in circular paths over hard surfaces, T. majus localize near hard boundaries by turning their flagella to exert a net force normal to the surface. To probe the torques that stabilize this hydrodynamically bound state, the trajectories of several thousand collisions between a T. majus cell and a wall of a quasi-two-dimensional microfluidic chamber are analyzed. Measuring the fraction of cells escaping the wall either to the left or to the right of the point of contact - and …

Spectroscopic Characterization Of Trivalent Holmium In Liyf4 And Bay2F8 Crystals, Vivian R. Hedberg Mar 2024

Spectroscopic Characterization Of Trivalent Holmium In Liyf4 And Bay2F8 Crystals, Vivian R. Hedberg

Theses and Dissertations

Yttrium-fluoride crystals doped with trivalent holmium are promising laser gain media for mid-infrared laser systems. To accurately model laser systems, a complete optical characterization of the laser gain medium is required. The key modeling parameters were obtained by a spectroscopic investigation of Ho3+ in LiYF4 and BaY2F8 crystal hosts. Several important mid-infrared laser transitions were characterized at nominal Ho3+ ion concentrations of 10-30 at.%. Polarized emission cross-sections were determined from the fluorescence spectra using the Füchtbauer-Ladenburg method. Polarized absorption cross-sections were obtained using the Integral Reciprocity method. The upper-state lifetimes were measured at room …

Analyzing The Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulence On Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs Using Quantum State Tomography, Noah S. Everett Mar 2024

Analyzing The Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulence On Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs Using Quantum State Tomography, Noah S. Everett

Theses and Dissertations

To help in building a quantum-based communication link, we experimentally designed a system to simulate atmospheric turbulence and characterize its effects on a polarization-entangled photon-pair source. The simulated turbulence is constructed using two afocal optical systems with a phase plate inserted in each to mimic both weak and strong atmospheric turbulence respectively. After propagation, quantum state tomography (QST) is performed on each pair to reconstruct the density matrix of the pair’s overall polarization state. In characterization of the simulated turbulence, we were able to reach strengths up to a D/r0 of 18.2, which begins to approach the strong turbulent regime. …

Feasibility Of A Zero-Length Spring Gravimeter For Use In Portal Monitoring, Matthew C. Stone Mar 2024

Feasibility Of A Zero-Length Spring Gravimeter For Use In Portal Monitoring, Matthew C. Stone

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, gravimeters have become sensitive enough to theoretically measure masses of interest at distances relevant for portal monitoring. Characterizing the re[1]sponse of the gravimeter to close range masses across a large solid angle is necessary before attempting to demonstrate a portal-monitoring-like measurement due to this mission being outside the scope of typical gravimeter operations. The characterization of the gravimeter focused on three primary topics. For the position-dependent bias, it is found that the models used overestimate the expected observed gravity when the test mass is closest to the gravimeter in four out of seventeen experiments and under[1]estimate the …

We present the discoveries of two of AM CVn systems, Gaia14aae and SDSS J080449.49+161624.8, which show X-ray pulsations at their orbital periods, indicative of magnetically collimated accretion. Both also show indications of higher rates of mass transfer relative to the expectations from binary evolution driven purely by gravitational radiation, based on existing optical data for Gaia14aae, which show a hotter white dwarf temperature than expected from standard evolutionary models, and X-ray data for SDSS J080449.49+161624.8 which show a luminosity 10−100 times higher than those for other AM CVn at similar orbital periods. The higher mass transfer rates could be driven …

Magnetic hyperthermia is an effective modality for treating cancerous cells selectively at the intracellular level via proper administration, surface tagging and appropriate choice of magnetic nanoparticle. Also, achieving the therapeutic temperature with as much low concentration of nanoparticles, as possible, is desirable. Recently, ferromagnetic nanoparticles or ferrofluid are gaining attention as effective magnetic hyperthermia agents due to their enhanced heating potential under in vivo conditions. In the present work, we have fabricated citrate capped cobalt ferrite ferrofluid via a simple two-step process and investigated the physicochemical, magnetic and induction heating performance. The average size of the synthesized nanoparticle …

Neutron Spectrum Unfolding From Activation Foils Irradiated In Gamble Ii Using Deuterated Polyethylene Anodes, Christopher J. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Neutrons can cause irreparable harm to electronics, and experiments are needed to understand their effects fully. This work explores using pulsed power, which is low-cost compared to other sources, to create a useful neutron-rich environment. Deuterated polyethylene was used as anode and catcher material to generate the neutrons from the Deuterium-Deuterium (DD) fusion reaction. A simple, effective, and repeatable method was employed to directly cast deuterated polyethylene onto polyethylene sheets to fabricate the anode and catcher. The DD reactions were made by an ion beam-driven pulsed power generator, Gamble II, with the catcher located in the cathode. Zinc, copper, aluminum, …

In this review, we examine recent progress using boron nitride (BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS) nanostructures for electronic, energy, biomedical, and environmental applications. The scope of coverage includes zero-, one-, and two-dimensional nanostructures such as BN nanosheets, BN nanotubes, BN quantum dots, MoS nanosheets, and MoS quantum dots. These materials have sizable bandgaps, differentiating them from other metallic nanostructures or small-bandgap materials. We observed two interesting trends: (1) an increase in applications that use heterogeneous materials by combining BN and MoS nanostructures with other nanomaterials, and (2) strong research interest in environmental applications. Last, we encourage researchers to study how …

First-Principles Study Of Hydrogen Storage Application Of Ti3c2tx Monolayer Mxene, Yi Zhi Chu, Kah Chun Lau

Michigan Tech Publications

MXene, with its high aspect ratio and adjustable surface properties, has garnered significant attention in the realm of hydrogen storage research. For the first time, considering a ternary/quaternary mixed terminated MXene surface, the authors have investigated comprehensively the hydrogen storage potential of two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide Ti3C2Tx monolayer MXene using density functional theory (DFT). By considering mixed terminated surfaces, this study indicated the locally induced dipole due to the mixed termination is beneficial in facilitating hydrogen adsorption with stronger average adsorption energies than that of the uniform F-/O-/OH-/H-terminated surfaces. The authors estimated a compelling average H2 surface adsorption energy on …

The Behavior Of ½⟨111⟩ Screw Dislocations In W–Mo Alloys Analyzed Through Atomistic Simulations, Lucas A. Heaton, Kevin Chu, Adib J. Samin Feb 2024

The Behavior Of ½⟨111⟩ Screw Dislocations In W–Mo Alloys Analyzed Through Atomistic Simulations, Lucas A. Heaton, Kevin Chu, Adib J. Samin

Faculty Publications

Analyzing plastic flow in refractory alloys is relevant to many different commercial and technological applications. In this study, screw dislocation statics and dynamics were studied for various compositions of the body-centered cubic binary alloy tungsten–molybdenum (W–Mo). The core structure did not appear to change for different alloy compositions, consistent with the literature. The pure tungsten and pure molybdenum samples had the lowest plastic flow, while the highest dislocation velocities were observed for equiatomic, W0.5Mo0.5 alloys. In general, dislocation velocities were found to largely align with a well-established dislocation mobility phenomenological model supporting two discrete dislocation mobility regimes, …

A Canonical Transformation For The Anderson Lattice Hamiltonian With F–F Electron Coupling, Guang-Lin Zhao Feb 2024

A Canonical Transformation For The Anderson Lattice Hamiltonian With F–F Electron Coupling, Guang-Lin Zhao

Faculty Publications

In this work, a new canonical transformation for the Anderson lattice Hamiltonian with f–f electron coupling was developed, which was further used to identify a new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian. Different from the single impurity Kondo effect, the resulted new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian only includes the spin-flip scattering processes between conduction electrons and f-electrons, while the normal process of non-spin-flip scattering is absent in this Hamiltonian, under the second order approximation. The new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian may be used to study some anomalous physical properties in some Kondo lattice intermetallic compounds.

Impacts Of Marine Heatwaves On Subsurface Temperatures And Dissolved Oxygen In The Chesapeake Bay, Nathan P. Shunk, Piero L. F. Mazzini, Ryan K. Walter

Physics

Subsurface impacts associated with Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) in estuaries are not well understood, largely due to data scarcity. Using over three decades (1986–2021) of observations from several monitoring programs, this study investigates subsurface temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) anomalies associated with surface MHWs in the Chesapeake Bay (CB). Seasonal variability in temperature anomalies followed a simple 1-D response to surface heating with downward heat transport and diffusion controlled by seasonally variable stratification and mixing. Two distinct temperature regimes were found: a thermally stratified spring-summer regime, when positive temperature anomalies were confined to the surface mixed layer (SML); and a homogeneous …

We present the first deep X-ray observations of luminous fast blue optical transient (LFBOT) AT 2018cow at ∼3.7 yr since discovery, together with the reanalysis of the observation at δt ∼ 220 days. X-ray emission is significantly detected at a location consistent with AT 2018cow. The very soft X-ray spectrum and sustained luminosity are distinct from the spectral and temporal behavior of the LFBOT in the first ∼100 days and would possibly signal the emergence of a new emission component, although a robust association with AT 2018cow can only be claimed at δt ∼ 220 days, while at …

Investigations Of The Eutectic Formation And Skin Rejuvenation By Hyaluronan - Kojic Acid Dipalmitate System, Syed Waqar Hussain Shah, Sumbal Imran, Iram Bibi, Kashif Ali, Nadia Bashir

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Eutectic phenomenon has been investigated in binary system based on biopolymer hyaluronan (HN) and kojic acid dipalmitate (KAD). Solid-liquid phase diagram showed a significant dependence of melting points on weight fraction of KAD up to KAD < 0.5. A negligible regain to melting temperature of pure KAD occurred later. Simulations of molecular mechanics using a four-unit segment of HN and KAD revealed the interaction between carbonyl of KAD with 4-OH on N-acetylglucosamine unit of oligomer. Infrared vibrational spectroscopy also endorsed the existence of a weakly interacting system. Such behavior was expected due to steric hinderance and rigidity of biopolymer. The thermal decomposition temperature of HN (i.e., 215 °C) was increased to 322 °C in HK50 having HN and KAD in 1:50 w/w. Bioelectric impedance analysis revealed that these green materials could promote skin health in humans.

Thermal Phonon Fluctuations And Stability Of The Magnetic Dual Chiral Density Wave Phase In Dense Qcd, Efrain J. Ferrer, William Gyory, Vivian De La Incera

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We study the stability against thermal phonon fluctuations of the magnetic dual chiral density wave (MDCDW) phase, an inhomogeneous phase arising in cold, dense QCD in a magnetic field. Following a recent study that demonstrated the absence of the Landau-Peierls (LP) instability from this phase, we calculate the (threshold) temperature at which the phonon fluctuations wash out the long-range order over a range of magnetic fields and densities relevant to astrophysical applications. Using a high-order Ginzburg-Landau expansion, we find that the threshold temperature is very near the critical temperature for fields of order 10 18     G and still a sizable …

Reheating Constraints To Palatini Coleman-Weinberg Inflation, Nilay Bostan

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this work, we examine the reheating constraints to symmetry-breaking mechanism, which is associated with Coleman-Weinberg inflation in the early universe. We consider the Coleman-Weinberg inflation potential, where the inflaton has a v ̸= 0 after inflation. Setting Treh = 105 GeV, we first show wreh dependency on ns , r , and N∗ for AV case. Then, we demonstrate the results of ns , r , N∗ , α = dns/d ln k for different reheating temperatures and compare the results with the latest BICEP/Keck data. We also present that ns −r and ns −N∗ planes and the effect …

Yuan and Feng (Eur. Phys. J. Plus 138:70, 2023) recently proposed a modification of the nested Mach–Zehnder interferometer experiment performed by Danan et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 111:240402, 2013) and argued that photons give “contradictory” answers about where they have been, when traces are locally imprinted on them in different ways. They concluded that their results are comprehensible from what they call the “three-path interference viewpoint,” but difficult to explain from the “discontinuous trajectory” viewpoint advocated by Danan et al. We argue that the weak trace approach (the basis of the “discontinuous trajectory” viewpoint) provides a consistent explanation of the …

Low Fine-Tuning With Heavy Higgsinos In Yukawa Unified Susy Guts, Cem Salih Ün Feb 2024

Low Fine-Tuning With Heavy Higgsinos In Yukawa Unified Susy Guts, Cem Salih Ün

Turkish Journal of Physics

The work presented considers a class of minimally constructed Yukawa unified SUSY GUTs - NUHM2 - and explores their implications when their soft supersymmetry breaking Lagrangian is generalized by the nonholomorphic terms which provide extra contributions to the Higgsino mass and couple the supersymmetric scalar fields to the wrong Higgs doublets. With such a simple extension, it can be found several regions with interesting implications which cannot be realized in the usual restricted models. It is observed that the Yukawa unification solutions can be compatible with a relatively light mass spectrum and acceptable low fine-tuning measurements. In the restricted models …
