Three-Wave Mixing Experiments In Indium–Tin–Oxide Thin-Films With No Phase Matching, Kyle Wynne, Marjan Bazian, Mark C. Harrison
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
One challenge of using nonlinear optical phenomena for practical applications is the need to perform phase-matching. Recently, epsilon-near-zero materials have been shown to demonstrate strong optical nonlinearities, in addition to their other unique properties. As suggested by their name, the permittivity of the material is close to zero for a certain wavelength range. We demonstrate that this small permittivity allows for efficient three-wave mixing interactions to take place in indium–tin–oxide thin films without the need for phase matching the pump and signal beams. The efficiency of the second-order nonlinear interactions is characterized, and cascaded three-wave mixing is demonstrated.

The Role Of Efflux Pump Inhibitor In Enhancing Antimicrobial Efficiency Of Silver Nanoparticles And Methylene Blue As An Effective Photodynamic Therapy Agent, Yaran Allamyradov
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Efflux pumps are critical active transport systems utilized by cells to expel toxic substances, including antibiotics and photosensitizer complexes, thereby contributing to antimicrobial resistance. Efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs), which are compounds that obstruct the transport of molecules through these pumps, play a pivotal role in enhancing the effectiveness of antimicrobial therapies against pathogens. This study investigates the effects of the EPI reserpine on the photodeactivation rate of pathogens when used in conjunction with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and methylene blue (MB), a common photosensitizer.
Our research reveals that the application of reserpine, in combination with Ag NPs and MB, leads …

Settingsorder Article Reprints Open Accessarticle A Model To Account For The Effects Of Load Ratio And Hydrogen Pressure On The Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior Of Pressure Vessel Steels, Ashok Saxena, Kip O. Findley
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A phenomenological model for estimating the effects of load ratio R and hydrogen pressure PH2 on the hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth rate (HA-FCGR) behavior in the transient and steady-state regimes of pressure vessel steels is described. The "transient regime" is identified with crack growth within a severely embrittled zone of intense plasticity at the crack tip. The "steady-state" behavior is associated with the crack growing into a region of comparatively lower hydrogen concentration located further away from the crack tip. The model treats the effects of R and PH2 as being functionally separable. In the transient …
Surface Patterning On Zirconia Dental Implants Via Laser-Induced Shockwave Imprinting, Inomjon Majidov
Surface Patterning On Zirconia Dental Implants Via Laser-Induced Shockwave Imprinting, Inomjon Majidov
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Zirconia is rapidly becoming a preferred alternative to titanium in dental applications, primarily due to its aesthetic resemblance to natural teeth. This material’s tooth-like color avoids the aesthetic issues associated with the grey metal tint of titanium implants. Additionally, zirconia is hypoallergenic, making it an ideal choice for patients with metal sensitivities or allergies. Despite these advantages, zirconia generally exhibits lower biocompatibility and osseointegration compared to titanium implants. This study investigates laser-assisted, controlled imprinting technique on zirconia surfaces to enhance these properties. Our research used zirconia pellets, produced from powdered monoclinic zirconia pressed in a pellet press machine. Two methods …

On Weak Solutions And The Navier-Stokes Equations, Aryan Prabhudesai
Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this paper, I will discuss a partial differential equation that has solutions that are discontinuous. This example motivates the need for distribution theory, which will provide an interpretation of what it means for a discontinuous function to be a “solution” to a PDE. Then I will give a detailed foundation of distributions, including the definition of the derivative of a distribution. Then I will introduce and give background on the Navier-Stokes equations. Following that, I will explain the Millennium Problem concerning global regularity for the Navier-Stokes equations and share mathematical results regarding weak solutions. Finally, I will go over …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Zirconium (Zr) Thin Film On Si(100) Via Pulsed Laser Deposition, Zikrulloh Khuzhakulov
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study investigates the synthesis and characterization of zirconium (Zr) thin films deposited on Si(100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effects of two laser wavelengths (1064 nm and 532 nm), various substrate temperatures (25 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C), and different laser fluences (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 J/cm²) on the properties of the Zr films were examined. Results indicated that smoother films were achieved with the 1064 nm wavelength, while surface roughness increased with higher fluences. Optimal crystalline films were obtained at a substrate temperature of 300 °C for both wavelengths. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), …

Investigations Of Sulfurized Polymers For Their Use In Lithium-Sulfur Cells, Alan M. Rowland
All Theses
With the invention of the Lithium-Ion cell in the latter half of the 20th century, there has been a continued endeavor for innovation in compact energy-storage. Combined with the ever-growing need to move away from fossil fuels, electrochemical energy storage has seen a myriad of research projects in the pursuit of finding the ‘beyond-lithium’ cell. One of these projects that I personally assisted with was lithium-sulfur cells, which allow for a significantly greater energy storage capacity when compared to lithium-ion cells. In investigating a popular cathode in lithium-sulfur cells, sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN), it was hinted that there may be more …

Over the past two decades, significant progress in two-dimensional (2D) materials has invigorated research in condensed matter and material physics in low dimensions. While traditionally studied in three-dimensional systems, magnetism has now been extended to the 2D realm. Recent breakthroughs in 2D magnetism have attracted substantial interest from the scientific community, owing to the stable magnetic order achievable in atomically thin layers of the van der Waals (vdW)-type layered magnetic materials. These advances offer an exciting platform for investigating related phenomena in low dimensions and hold promise for spintronic applications. Consequently, vdW magnetic materials with tunable magnetism have attracted significant …

The ca. 565 Ma Ediacaran geodynamo was highly unusual, producing an ultralow field 10 times weaker than present-day value of 8 x 1022 A m2. A ∼5 times rise in field strength is seen in time-averaged single crystal paleointensity data of ca. 532 Ma Early Cambrian anorthosites of Oklahoma (USA). The field increase could record the onset of inner core nucleation predicted by thermal evolution and numerical dynamo models. Here, we examine the renewal of the geodynamo through zircon U-Pb geochronology and single crystal paleointensity studies of plagioclase from the Chatham-Grenville syenite intrusion in the Grenville Province (Canada). U-Pb data …

We demonstrate the controllable generation of distinct types of dispersive shock waves emerging in a quantum droplet bearing environment with the aid of steplike initial conditions. Dispersive regularization of the ensuing hydrodynamic singularities occurs due to the competition between mean-field repulsion and attractive quantum fluctuations. This interplay delineates the dominance of defocusing (hyperbolic) and focusing (elliptic) hydrodynamic phenomena being designated by the real and the imaginary speed of sound, respectively. Specifically, the symmetries of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii model led to a three-parameter family, encompassing two densities and a relative velocity of the underlying Riemann problem utilized herein. Surprisingly, dispersive shock …

Approximated functional renormalization group (FRG) equations lead to regulator-dependent β-functions, in analogy to the scheme-dependence of the perturbative renormalization group (pRG) approach. A scheme transformation redefines the couplings to relate the β-functions of the FRG method with an arbitrary regulator function to the pRG ones obtained in a given scheme. Here, we consider a periodic sine-Gordon scalar field theory in d = 2 dimensions and show that the relation of the FRG and pRG approaches is intricate. Although both the FRG and the pRG methods are known to be sufficient to obtain the critical frequency β c 2 = 8 …

Emergent Phenomena In Ferroelectric-Dielectric And Ferroelectric-Graphene Heterostructures, Tianlin Li
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation explores the emergent phenomena in epitaxial ferroelectric oxide-based heterostructures, including the negative capacitance (NC) effect in ferroelectric-dielectric systems, ferroelectric gate imposed mobility limit in graphene field-effect transistors, and ferroelectric domain-induced graphene-superlattices.
We carry out a phenomenological study of the NC effect in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3/SrTiO3 capacitors. The Landau free-energy profile predicts a critical thickness ratio for the ferroelectric-dielectric phase transition, consistent with the observed abrupt change in remnant polarization. A static NC state is observed in the low thickness ratio region, which is compromised by the emergence of multidomain in the moderate ratio …

Methods For Improving Low Frequency Selection And Electrode Firing Order In Cochlear Implants, James H. Keen Jr.
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Advanced Bionics cochlear implant devices allocate static frequency bins to electrode channels based on the natural tonotopic organization of the cochlea. These frequency bins are wide and limited, especially in the lower range. Considering that the fundamental tones of the human voice and the primary melodic tones in music are in this lower range, it is important to have accurate representation of this frequency content. Here, adjustments to the frequency bin allocation algorithm used in the crowdsourced CI Hackathon code are made to allow a more accurate representation of the original signal. First, the frequency bins allocated to each …

An Analysis Of The Propagation Of Gravitational Radiation Under A Graviton Of Nonzero Mass And Its Implications For Cosmological Measurements, Margaret Johnston
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Under the assumptions of General Relativity (GR), gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light and their mediation can be represented as a particle through a massless graviton. We investigate the impact and observability of the presence of a massive graviton, how such a modification to GR would also modify the observed gravitational waves from astrophysical sources, and how this effect can be used as an independent measurement of cosmmological parameters, including the Hubble parameter H0. We simulate the impact of a massive graviton on compact binary coalescence observation in a near-future LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA interferometer network through a modification to the …

The capability of curcumin and its analogs to inhibit various processes involved in cancer development and progression has been extensively studied. Curcumin is also a photoactive compound, which can be activated with blue light to initiate photochemistry. Motivated by this and its inherent anti-cancer properties, we examined the practicality of using a commercially available nano-cumin formulation as a photosensitizer for the photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment of oral cancers. Despite the significant limitation of curcumin in only absorbing blue light, which lies outside the optical window and suffers from poor penetration depths, we meticulously investigated its potential. Our systematic examination using …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Silicon photonic integrated circuits enable the capability of producing on-chip processing of photonic signals, including both emission and detection. Emission materials, however, have been limited for monolithic integration due to high processing temperatures, indirect bandgap materials, and material integration complications. The (Si)GeSn material system has recently attracted attention due to the bandgap transition from the Si and Ge, naturally indirect bandgap, to direct bandgap with sufficient Sn incorporation. Additionally, the low growth temperature (CMOS compatible; <400 >°C) of (Si)GeSn materials can enable the monolithic integration of the highly desired mid-infrared light emission on the Si Photonic platform. This dissertation first discusses …400>

Rabi Oscillations And Entanglement Between Two Rydberg Atoms In An Optical Cavity Studied By The Jaynes-Cummings Model And Quantum Circuits On Qiskit, Francisco D. Santillan
Theses and Dissertations
Rydberg atoms are highly excited atoms in which one electron has a large principal quantum number. Due to their unusual atomic properties, Rydberg atoms are promising building blocks of two-qubit gates and light-atom quantum interfaces in quantum information processing. For two atoms at close distance (< 10 mm) the Rydberg blockade prevents the two atoms to be simultaneously in the excited state whereas this blockade is absent for atoms far apart. Recently, this effect was used to engineer a quantum processor based on two-dimensional arrays of neutral atoms which are trapped and transported by optical tweezers. Motivated by these experiments, we study the light-atom interaction and entanglement of two Rydberg atoms interacting by the Rydberg blockade in an optical cavity using the Jaynes-Cummings model. We find a rich variety of Rabi oscillations and entanglement as a function of initial conditions and interaction time, which may be used to generate two-qubit gates. Furthermore, we develop and simulate a quantum circuit of this system using Qiskit, an open-source software development kit designed to emulate the operation of a real Quantum Computer.
Density Functional Theory Calculations On Electronic And Optical Properties Of Mos2/Metal Heterojunction, Mos2/Graphene/Metal Vertical Heterostructure Interfaces And Sulfur Vacancies On Mos2/Au, Shishir Timilsena
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation on computational simulations and analyses of heterostructures formed by two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and graphene (Gr) on various metal coated substrates, including gold (Au), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and platinum (Pt). The frequency-dependent dielectric function (ɛ(ω)), refractive index (n), and reflectivity (R) are determined using light polarization parallel and perpendicular to the c axis of the 2D layers. Our findings reveal that MoS2/Au, MoS2/Cu, and MoS2/Pt heterostructures exhibit a direct bandgap at the K-point of the Brillouin zone, whereas their corresponding MoS2/MoS2/Metal structures present an indirect bandgap. The reduced interlayer spacing …

Influential Factors And Predicting Dose Delivery Accuracy For Imaging And Radiation Oncology Core’S Phantom Program Using Machine Learning, Hunter Mehrens
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
IROC’s mission is to help ensure consistent and comparable, high-quality radiotherapy across clinics that participate in national clinical trials. To obtain this mission, IROC’s phantom program provides a third-party end-to-end check of the clinical workflow of a patient receiving radiotherapy. The goal of the phantom audit is to compare the dose delivered to the dose planned by the treatment system ensuring dose delivery accuracy. While IROC’s phantoms are better equipped to catch dose delivery errors compared to a clinic’s QA process, the end-to-end process and reporting of results is time-consuming creating a bottleneck for clinical trial participation. Furthermore, IROC’s passing …

Evidence For Rapid Variability At High Energies In Grbs, E. Casey Aldrich, Robert J. Nemiroff
Michigan Tech Publications
Intrinsic variability was searched for in arrival times of six gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at high energies – between 30 MeV and 2 GeV – detected by the Fermi satellite’s Large Area Telescope (LAT). The GRBs were selected from the Fermi LAT catalogue with preference for events with numerous photons, a strong initial pulse, and measured redshifts. Three long GRBs and three short GRBs were selected and tested. Two different variability-detection algorithms were deployed, one counting photons in pairs, and the other multiplying time gaps between photons. In both tests, a real GRB was compared to 1000 Monte Carlo versions of …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
It is well known that exotic properties and phenomena emerge as structural dimensions shrink to nanoscales. We self-assembled one-dimensional chains of gold nanoparticles in solution and quantified the growth process by monitoring the redshift of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Curiously, the redshift stopped while the chains continued to rearrange as manifested by gradual reduction in the LSPR peak. Using electromagnetic simulations, we quantitatively explained the phenomena as a rapid “addition-polymerization” followed by a sharp transition to “condensation-process.” Next, recognizing the significant electric field enhancement in the interparticle gap, a photoluminescent-active Eu3+ ion was used to probe Surface-Enhanced Photoluminescence …
Search For Physics Beyond The Standard Model In Top Quark Production With Additional Leptons In The Context Of Effective Field Theory, Furong Yan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The dissertation presents a search for new physics impacting top quark productions within the framework of effective field theory (EFT). Potential new physics effects are parameterized in terms of 26 dimension-six EFT operators into the event yields of six distinct top production processes in the detector level. The analysis targets multilepton final states consisting of two leptons of the same charge, three leptons and four leptons. The events are further categorized and binned in terms of kinematic distributions in order to gain sensitivity to the new physics effects. A likelihood function is formulated based on the predicted distribution in each …
